Silent Hill. Definitely Silent Hill.

I remember first playing the demo to SH1 on the PS and everytime that one monster came and killed you (in the intro scene) I would turn off the PS. That was so fucked up, with the freaky noises and the freaky atmosphere and all. Then I borrowed SH2 from my cousin and I always played it with one of my friends, never alone. Then came SH3 wich I completed mostly together with a friend, not because I was scared, but because... Well, it's more fun with two. Later I completed it alone to get the extra weapons etc. So after all that I downloaded SH4 wich I never got to complete because of hardware problem. (I still have the game installed on my partition, but it's not working, probably some deleted registry stuff)

So yeah, Silent Hill is win because I've completed RE 1, 2, 3 and Code Veronica X and they weren't that scary at all. Silent Hill just feels creepy.

the remake on GC is definately a lot better, it's the game the original should've been. The crimson heads, zombies that just come back to life, but run and slash and are generaly much much stronger in attack and difficulty to kill. Also, the lighting made that game increadible. RE4 was creepy the first time through when things come at you unexpectedly, like the chainsaw guy, the regenerators, and such. I had no idea how to kill the regenerator the first time through, never got the thermal scope, so i'd sit back with the rifle and blow off it's legs and just unlease and pray I killed it, having no idea what i actually needed to do. And the guys with the long claws, they were crazy.

Rydain - I'm about 30 miles from State College, I go shopping there sometimes. I read all of Lovecrafts books many years ago, but he is easily my favorite horror writer. I recently re-read The Whisperer In The Dark because it was so good! I used to really be into the Call of Ctulhu RPG but I lost contact with all my players so I have'nt played it in a long time. I thought the very idea that my girl in SH3 could single-handedly defeat an eldar god was absurd and ruined the horror of it. Actually the biggest problem with SH3 was that they tried to explain everything. SH1 and SH2 were so effective BECAUSE we did'nt know what the hell was going on. The unknown is much more frightening than the known. I forgot how silly that spider in It was *LOL*
I tried SH3 with the puzzles on hard once, and gave up almost right away because i did'nt know enough about Shakespeare to get past the bookstore, and was'nt bored enough to research it. I did think the hidden weapons and outfits you could get were kinda fun the second time through, even though looking like some kinky anime chick with a light-saber completely killed the atmosphere

Hey, how about that Halloween game on the Atari 2600, that freaked me out more than any video game till we got to 32 bits!

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who hated that screen. I used to do that Up + A "quick save" trick when I was about to lose my last life just to avoid it. I didn't even like the screen you got from losing a life. The pulsating background and "brrrrr" noise were unpleasant and creepy.

I never played any real scary games until I was much older, so they don't phase me.

Jomb - My profile is correct. I'm a mile from the Penn State campus. And on the subject of Lovecraftian stuff...I forgot that elder gods can freak me out in well-chosen contexts. I read The Horror in the Museum a while ago, and I thought it was a great story. But, as you said, it just seemed so extraneous in SH3. The last boss was about as frightening and disturbing as that animatronic spider at the end of the made-for-TV adaptation of Stephen King's IT.

Jin Dogan - I would suggest playing the first Silent Hill (or at least reading a plot guide) before SH3, as SH3 is a direct sequel. SH2 and SH4 have different storylines entirely, so you can play those whenever you want. I think SH2 is a good starting point. It won't spoil any of the other games, and it's not quite as scary as SH, so it will help you get used to the freaky atmospheres and stuff. As far as gameplay is concerned, I agree with what Jomb said. I would add that unlike RE, SH games have unlimited saves, and you can select your difficulty level. SH2 and SH3 let you choose separate action and puzzle difficulties. (Hard puzzle mode on SH3 should have been labeled hell mode, as some of the puzzles cannot be solved analytically without outside knowledge.) Just keep in mind that SH3 is harder than the others (at least in my experience) because of its lack of ammo, emphasis on combat, and level design (most of the game takes place in cramped corridors and rooms). Even on Easy, some areas of the game gave me problems, and believe me, I'm not TERRIBLE at Silent Hill. As I noted upthread, SH4 has a different gameplay style from the other three games.

I have'nt played the GC Resident Evil... because i dont have a GC. Is it that much different than the origional? I did enjoy the origional, even though it felt more like an action game with a couple easy puzzles thrown in than a horror game to me. I probably wont be able to play the GC one until the future date when GC is a dead system and is emulated
I have'nt played the latest Silent Hill myself so i dont know if it would be a good starting point. I'd start with 2 if I were you, or 1 would be cool to. The story line for the silent hill games only has the town of silent hill in common as far as i can tell, its not really an ongoing plot between the games. The game play is actually somewhat similar to Resident Evil, but with less emphasis on combat and more on nightmarish settings and puzzles.

Jomb: Oh my goodness, I feel like SUCH a nub right now...

RE4 wasn't really that scary especially compared to the GC remake of the first one. THAT was fnuckin insane. Crimson heads, that's where it's at.

I've honestly never played a silent hill game. Can I play the latest without worrying about missing any of the story? How is the overall gameplay of the games?

I've never played Fatal Frame, but with so many people saying its cool i may look for it next time i buy games.

Rydain - Hey, you live right near me! (at least according to your profile) I dont think i play scary games the same way most people do, ever since being a young child i've loved horror movies, so they dont really scare me in a scream out loud and have nightmares kind of way, it's more like i get more sucked in by the plot with all the heightened tension. I wish they gave me nightmares though, i love having nightmares Silent Hill 2 has one of the best storylines i've ever seen in a game, its one of my favorite games, Siren just beats it out by a hair, and not because the storyline is better, but because of having superior game design. The odd thing about Silent Hill 3 is that i love Lovecrafts writings dearly, but i've never yet seen anyone else successfully mimic his ability to make atmosphere and give me a real feeling of cosmic terror, when SH3 tries to bring up eldar gods and such it just feels forced, and by making the main character something supernatural you lose the feeling of being just an ordinary human up against forces you could'nt possibly defeat. I also think a great horror game should have less emphasis on fighting, because if a monster or situation was really that terrifying then it would take more than guns to deal with it.

Jin Dogan - You looked me up? Jesus on Mars? When i looked me up all i get is some non-english speaking websites of some guy apparently with my name, and information about my most famous hack, PCP.

FEAR, the hot game out for the PC.

Seriously, this game freaked me the fuck out. I was playing with a friend, in relative darkness circa 12AM at his house, and there's this one part involving climbing a ladder, and the freaky girl that's on the box is standing at the top of it, and we literally yelled out loud various obscenities.

The next morning, his dad came by and was like "did I hear you guys like yell last night?"

That game actually made me afraid of ladders (in the game that is), because every time I was expecting the girl to be there.

Scariest game ever? Tetris, definately Tetris

Seriously I never really though of any games to be scary, but a friend of mine when he was younger used to be deathly afraid of the game "Attack of the Killer Tomatos" for the NES...

Rydain: I looked up Jomb and got this:

The scariest game of all time is...Ghosts n' Goblins! What? The graphics and eerie sounds of the flying burritos freak me out. I couldn't walk around my house at night without being scared shitless.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

It's a shocking game when you get past your memory of Ocarina of Time. When you hear the rattles as the skull kid starts invading Link's mind. Termina being destroyed. The music on the final day, in the clock tower and observatory. Link being trapped in a deku scrub's body. Majora's mask posessing the moon and finally the children running around in the field before facing the wrath of Majora's Mask, the final boss.
It's a seriously freaky game because it's so unexpected.

ClockTower 3 was pretty fun. Realistic until Alyssa uses her magic bow...
75% of the time, there was no high-powered weapon to help you. Alyssa just ran away looking for an escape from the killer. Every now and then, she'd stumble, which really draws out the reality of it all.

The only disappointment was the short length of the game. I beat it in 4 hours.

I’m not a big fan of horror games because I really don’t enjoy playing them. Well I do enjoy it but they just scare seven barrels of shit out of me.

The first time I remember being scared on a game was when I first got Resident Evil. Took me two years to finish the game because I had to keep stopping. Silent Hill was the next I remember scaring me at all but this wasn’t too bad really because me and a friend completed it together I never had the game so I never played it on my own.

I haven’t played many other scary games because I just can’t play them. I can’t complete Doom 3 because I just can’t play it for a long length of time .

If it's a game that I didn't make, I'd say...

Silent Hill has the best suspense...
Carnevil has alot of terrifying things flashing in from different angles. It left me shaking the first time I played it and gave me some horrible dreams. That's the sign of a damned good horror game.

It's scarier when you're trying to kill an evil Barney the Dinosaur wannabe when the camera dashes to the floor diagonally, as if you just stumbled and needed to get up.

Some sights, sounds, whimsical characters turning evil in front of your face, a crapload of blood and gore staining the screen (you could see it drip off the zombies and stain them), very realistic reactions to the shotgun all add up to a disturbing, cartoonish game.

I love games like this so much. I'm trying to make an FPS with some evil happy-go-lucky enemies and a cheerful (but bloody) atmosphere. If you get a chance to play this, make sure you have enough quarters! The intro/demonstration is badass, it has Rob Zombie's "Superbeast" tune playing while zombies get shot up, torched, and even deep fried!

"Welcome to Rickety Town! Have some fun! Then eat your heart out on a sesame seed bun!"

Jomb - Ah...you're able to think logically about scary games. When I'm on edge thanks to unsettling environments and sounds, and I'm not skilled at survival horror action, rational thought tends to vacate my mind. Even if I'm in no danger of dying, the overall effect of the game just gets to me. I could probably get freaked out by a purely exploratory puzzle version of Silent Hill with no enemies at all. I remember playing The 11th Hour (a game that takes place in a dilapidated abandoned house) late at night and getting nervous, and you can't die or otherwise lose. All you can do is fail at solving a puzzle.

I didn't care for the story of Silent Hill 3 much, either. One of the reasons I liked 2 best is that its story was about personal grief and pain, not (as you said) some Lovecraftian knockoff, and it offered no explicit explanation for the freaky crap ensuing throughout the game. This gave it a plausibility of sorts that something like "Cthulhu's buddy is living in my basement" lacks. Pyramid Head obviously doesn't exist in the real world...but there are real-life phenomena that could explain James' experience. Without spoiling Jacob's Ledder, I'll just point to it as an example of what I'm talking about and mention that it was an inspiration for the Silent Hill series.

Speaking of Lovecraftian knockoffs, I watched some friends play Eternal Darkness and it just did not grab me. It seemed spooky and interesting, but I knew it wasn't going to scare me. A guy finds some weird artifact and turns into Skeletor! What am I ever going to do? *pretends to hide under the bed*

As far as Silent Hill 4 goes, I liked it overall. It wasn't originally meant to be a Silent Hill game, so its gameplay is noticeably different. Basically, you go back and forth between your apartment and a portal to some other world. The world advances through different areas as you progress through the game. Every now and then, you'll have to return to do some item-based puzzle or another. The exploratory aspect is quite linear and action-oriented. I thought the action was fun and one particular level was especially creatively designed and creepy. It was also interesting examining the same items in your apartment as the game progressed and getting different commentary from the main character. However...the second half of the game chafed my ass because it significantly ramped up the difficulty and tedium all of a sudden. You have to go through the first half all over again with some, erm, annoying baggage. Your inventory is limited and similar items don't stack, and the only drop box is in your room. In the second half of the game, you'll oftentimes have to pick up several things in order to finish a level, and getting back to the room to take care of things is much more of a burden after the midway point. Thus, it got to be a chore, so I just said feh and read a plot guide.

The problem with Eternal Darkness was that after you'd seen them all, the sanity effects just became gimmicky. They never messed with you aside from giving you a false scenario when you entered a room, so they never actually interfered with gameplay. And you couldn't even keep your sanity low to make things interesting, since you started losing health. And then eventually you built the green healing spell and sanity became trivial.

It was a cool game, but it didn't stay scary for long and it had nearly no replay value.
