I don't feel that this thread, nor its current direction, will accomplish much, if anything.

Do any of these threads?

On topic:

I really don't understand why people think its ok to call things gay, and faggy because it means "real bad", "stupid", or "lame". Isn't that exactly why it's not ok? Its using homosexuality as something derogatory or bad. Its like saying, "Man, that's so niggerish".

Yes, we all have freedom of speech. But if you're homophobic and want to offend people, just come right out and say it. Don't pretend there's nothing wrong with what you're saying, or try to rationalize it as not offensive. I think the offended are the judge of what's offensive.

I agree with you Tom, the word gay has been thrown around to where it's lost it's meaning. When people say it, they're usually not even implying you're homosexual, just an idiot.
Oh, and also, just for humor...

Too bad that wasn't the meaning. The meaning was bald-faced and apparent when Kawa made the damned joke. Anyways, this is being deliberated upon by forces much greater than anyone on this board. His name is Tim the Enchanter and he will do what is best.

I'll give it a day or two and unless I see a turn around - CLOSED!

I think you just need to go LOL INTERNET and move on with your life, you're focusing way too much on this.

knuck, I agree with Tom too, but more to the point where you leave out the SERIOUS BUSINESS part... We live in a world that thrives on semantics to the point where it's actually kinda sad to see. I dunno how I can make a reference to sorta fling it back at you, but haven't you ever been labelled as something inadvertently?

Okay, now that I've gotten that out of my system, why don't we speak of this civilly?

I take offense to the fact that DON'T #3 in the FAQ is ignored and the word faggot/faggy is used freely. Some may interpret the rule to mean explicit bigotry, but the example seems to imply that curtails the creation of a culture of exclusion and derogatory use. Afterall "DUDE THATS GAY" is usually used when something is stupid, but the meaning of gay is still strongly intertwined with homosexual.

Yes, gay used to mean happy. In a particularly fanciful, child-like, and immature way. Why in all creation do you think that it was applied to gay men? Because the popular view was that they weren't "real men", they were fanciful like women. It's taken an absurdly long time to reclaim the word, and now it's falling into yet more dire straits.

I find that the explanation that faggot "has a different meaning on the internet" to be utterly absurd.

I don't really have any beef with max as a person, but the culture behind this trend of word usage to be abominable. And yes, I do recognize that it is "just the internet", but if it was "just the internet" why would we all get angry over things like NinjaAE, or WTFHAX?! when someone messes with the board? Because they inconvenience and annoy us, and this inconveniences and annoys me.

Yes, words change and evolve. However, quite frankly, I don't think we've moved quite far enough beyond the origins of certain phrases to be appending completely divorced meanings to them.
