If I had the funds I would move out of this shithole town and someplace nice, around the California, Oregon, or Washington area.

Yay, move to Washington, if you could.

Over here, everything high-speed is ran by Comcast, but the price isn't that bad. The service, I find fairly dependable. I think the connection speed is supposed to be 4mb/s, too...

Yeah I have the same thing you have Metal but they still try to find ways to screw you over.
"we're sorry but that discount no longer applies. You don't have long distance" And yet I never had long distance to begin with yet I had that discount. And now it is gonna be even worse simply because SBC and AT&T combined.

Sorreh for the semi-bump, but the discussion about bad cable reminded me.

I have SBC, and it has been great 90% of the time. We're charged the right amount, and get new discounts every year, mainly because I always get the high-paying stuff and stick with it. We've only had, errr, ONE SERIOUS DISCONNECTION EVER, and it happened quite a while ago. While the Indian tech support was unable to do much, I think they eventually realized something had gone wrong and fixed it.

Regardless, no bandwidth caps, 3 mb/s (MEGABITS, not MEGABYTES), and staff ready to find discounts whenever possible. Oh, yeah. And we don't have to worry about cables being broken; as long as our phone line works, it usually works.

Um. I'm gonna need to hear a better explanation because, that just made no sense.

Ok, today the Customer Service Supervisor called me and straightened everything out real quick especially when I mentioned these words, "breach of contract" and "class action lawsuit". They immediately dropped my dsl not from $36 to $25 but from $36 all the way down to $21 for my dsl pro until the end of June. .

ROFL! I would´ve liked to see their faces when they heard those words.

my university has a bandwidth cap not because of money issues, but rather as a mean to control piracy...

I can't wait for the holographic discs with huge storage capacity, then I won't have to worry so much for space.

Yeah, that's why I had to switch. Hopefully they'll realize how out-of-date bandwidth caps are and remove it.

Holy crap that's quite a bit. Well I ave a 1 gig allowance set by my dad until i get out of school. Thats annoying... 1gig a month is quite limiting.

bandwidth cap is one thing, download speed is another -- fortunately, SBC doesn't have a bandwidth cap, otherwise I wouldn't have choosen it as a service. I rather download slower, knowing I can download as much as I can versus knowing I can only download no more than either 4 or 8 DVDs worth of data. I run through one 25 DVD5 spindle in about three weeks

Who knows, maybe by then a better ISP will be available. If you ever get the chance to get Cogeco and can live with a 15GB/month bandwidth limit (for $50/month, or 30GB for something like $65), do it. No shitty software required and the tech support is freaking awesome. (Also, if it's of any benefit to you, your IP only changes like once every 16 months. )

I remember a friend of mine who said thier customer service staff didn't have a fucking clue about anything and that AOL's "service" actualy fucked thier computer up by being like ATI's drivers. Non-removable.

Yes I am sure it is until the end of June, they even gave me an exact date. June 28 so that is the day I will cancel and get rerated.

are you sure it is until the end of june (i.e 6 months) and not for one year? Because I heard the same deal from SBC (same customer service call) and after 6 months, it goes back to $36...

Yay! Too many companies try to walk all over customers, but it's good to know that they fixed this.

Then, a lot of companies count on their customers being unaware of their rights.

This I don't doubt. Although they are not the only ISP in the world that sucks. Thankfully they were NOT the ones that overcharged me and I had to take to the TIO. That was a company called iHug.

I could try the BBB (Better Business Bureau) but I'm not sure if it would even help.

It would be worth trying anyways, as they may be able to at least point you in the right direction if they are unable to help directly.
