Surprisingly this thing is completely legit. As long as they truly dumped their own rom images its legal. laws say you can dump your own images as long as you dont distribute them. all they are doing is allowing someone to borrow something of theirs at a cost. once the connection ends the game is no longer supposed to function (if it still works it is illegal). also it would be illegal for two people to play a game at the same time and they have it so that cant be done to. they can only have as many people playing the game as they have of the original cartriges.

The site's just moved (consoleclassix.com), their game server is working also. A client known as Console Classix uses it. I have to say the emulation is pretty good. Except for Duck Hunt, I couldn't find a useable zapper. About those emulators, here's what's in the program directory. ZSNESW 1.36, custom nester, Gens 2.11, Z26 2.13, and an unknown version of gnuboy that wouldn't open. There's even a GPL notice, but I'm not sure what it applies to. Only their NES emulator is set to not allow your own ROMs. The others are standard.

I'm curious, though, how can they say it's legal? Are they just outright lying?

Heh, that was one of the first commercials I saw with google ads here.

And I say it's BS. It's not the first site I seen on the net doing this, there is severeal sites claiming to give you a life-time access to alot of movies legally... for only 10 dollars or something. Then all you get is a P2P program. :/

I've seen the link previously.. I believe it used to say that ZSNES was bundled in with it. (And of course, this was without permission..) Either they changed it, or I am thinking of another remarkebly similiar site.

Regardless, very illegal indeed.

That's another great point. So they're selling roms AND emulators, fantastic.

I figure all they'd need to do is toss some FAQ's into the mix for the legal hat trick.

I just want to know which "special program that lets you open and play the games on your Windows computer" is included, and whether or not they got permission to sell it from the programmers.

GameTap's legal, it's part of Turner and they have the rights to the games. They don't have thousands of games, mind you, but they have enough that they needed to get licenses for.

Actually, I think I've seen that site before. I was doing some work trying to find info on Ikari no Yousai (Fortified Zone) and I came across it.

Then again, look at GameTap. This kinda of 'pay for old games' thing doesn't seem to be new at all...regardless of legality...though it makes me wonder if GT is legal since it's practically broadcast on Turner Networks at least already for commercials about it.

Wow, that's incredibly illegal.

Even if they picked titles that aren't protected, the fact remains that they're still selling roms. Big no-no regardless of which roms they are.

http://www.pastgaming.com/supernintendo.html

I found this in on of the google ads at the bottom of the board. This is their legal disclaimer:

All copyrights and trademarks are exclusive property of their respective owners. pastgaming.com is not associated with Nintendo or any of its subsidiaries in any way. pastgaming.com charges a fee for download based on the size of the file. The games provided in this package qualify as "obsolete" works under the US Copyright Act section 1201, however if you own the copyrights to any one or more of the games we offer for download, please contact us and with some proof of ownership and copyright. We will take the appropriate steps needed to resolve any discrepancies.

If you check out the site it's

1) hilarious that anyone would pay for what they can easily get for free
2) doubtful it's anything close to legal
3) I'm betting they just picked out the titles that aren't currently protected, like Cheryroms, and thus most of the screenshots there probably aren't even downloadable (i.e. Nintendo produced games)
