Congratulations! I remember wanting to go there and become a game designer.

Fortunately I decided my skills lay in other areas. I'm bad at that stuff.

and (not to be completely late with this) upenn has its own digital media design program (which i'm in) that is similar in content to computer science, but has more of a focus on graphical things. it gears people toward jobs in 3d animation and the game industry, mainly.

as far as putting romhacking on one's resume, i think the general idea is that companies would prefer to hire someone who takes initiative and can potentially self-teach. romhacking tends to require both of those things. the reason why someone without formal education might be chosen over someone with it isn't because formal education is bad, but rather that just because you have a degree doesn't mean you went out of your way to learn something new or explore a personal interest.

I think you can do it if you put enough effort into it. And it takes time to come up with good games, so patience is a must.

And everyone can be creative.

Alastor: Congratulations, I guess. I wonder who the 3rd member who´ll apply to DigiPen will be.

I heard Washington State University has a simlar program as Digipen, but only quite smaller in size. I wanted to go into 3d animation ever since i was a little child, and starting in college last year, my goal was the same. I took a digital layout design class for a pre req at my school and it changed my whole reason. In some aspects both jobs can pay the same. Which is never a bad thing.

Good luck in the future man. Have fun but don't do anything stupid. First impressions are always going to get you into those locked doors in life.

This is the sort of thing I always wished I could do but know I probably couldn't...I doubt I would be creative enough, I'd feel sort of funny to even be in the same buisness as my hero Miyamoto when I know I'd probably never live up to it. But game design has always been a secret desire of mine. Here's hoping you both do well in your time at Digipen, and that we see many great games from you both in the future

Wow great I live in marysville washington and I go to Lake washington Technical college that is in kirland and that city is near redmond. I don't know if that college is better than the one i'm going. My program that I am doing is game design/animation. Wow we have something in common.

Congrats Kyouji.

[insert generic praise and sayings of 'you rule ' and 'you are so cool' and 'I fail because I'm not you' type of dealings]

No, you know what isn't allowed? Acting like a mod.

Don't be a dick.

Edit: Oh yeah, Alastor-- I already told you on AIM, but that's super kick ass, man.

Re: Making sacrifices: That is totally true. Work is my number one priority pretty much at all times, even when I'm off. And at the end of a project you will have no life whatsoever. I was working 60 to 80 hours a week for about two months straight.

Funny that I choose to poke around the board in time to see this...

I almost applied to Digipen, had the application and all. What changed my mind is a summer workshop that I went to. I actually posted to the board from the workshop, and would be able to show it to you guys if you hadn't managed to fuck up again and delete everything.

Anyways, at the workshop I met a lot of people and learned a good bit about the game industry. I'm sure you've all heard that the game industry is "not all fun and games" a million times over from game industry reps. Let me tell you: It is most DEFINATELY not. You get to go to a game design school and sacrifice your Typical American College Experience (Meeting new people, drinking, learning about a variety of things, sexual expiermentation, and / or watching women who like to experiment wrestle in a jello pool _¬) , and all you get in exchange for your loss is... MORE WORK. Cymoro will be busting his ass for the next four years. Then, if he decides to go into the video game industry, he gets to work even more than he used to be. In the video game indsustry you are basically expected to make sacrifices in other areas of your life in order to make video games. You will not have the same life that, say, an econ major from a good school would have, even if you are making good money in programming.

Not to discourage anyone from chasing thier dreams. Cymoro is certainly going to be making some sacrifices, and while that's unfortunate, it also makes his pursuit of his goal that much more admirable. If you really want to go for it, just make sure you know what you're getting into first. If that's not quite what you want then... Virginia Tech is a good east coast school that has a good computer science curriculum, a high ranked ACC football team and an unranked basketball team that would have upset #1 Duke if it weren't for a miracle 3-pt shot at the buzzer , and plenty of alcohol. Enjoy your jello wrestling.
