The phrase "politically correct" gives itself away, its not correct, its "politically" correct. I prefer to be correct.

It's about as crude of an idea as intelligence quotients. No one can accurately measure the intangible. It's bullshit.

I don't think Political Correctness is a bad thing, but people definitly abuse it. About the holidays, we do have seperation of Church and State, and in that sense a governmental body should not promote one religion over others. People also shouldn't suggest things like "Let the terrorists hit them (San Fransico) if they don't want military recruiters there" as Bill O'Reilly did. Good judgement is the best policy.

Political correctness? Does that exists?

Lucky for me that I couldn´t care less about it and that I´m allowed to think however I want.

They´re trying to manipulate us.

Political correct to me is that people are allowed to have whatever opinion/view they want about stuff. Freedom.

PC gets to be a pain a lot...especially around the holiday time where we have to tip-toe around everyone's religion and make sure by no means do we mention the incorrect holiday to them or favor a certain holiday. Saying things such as "Happy Holidays" isn't too bad, but in a school near where I live, the Christmas tree has to be called the "Holiday Tree", which I think is completely ridiculous. There's still a menorah there and that isn't referred to as the "Holiday Candelabra", so I see no reason to change the name of the Christmas tree .

I don't label anyone because as I've experienced you really never know what someone really is/where they are from. And it doesn't matter because it doesn't change who they are. PC just makes things more confusing and doesn't help at all because it doesn't eliminate the problem of labeling and grouping. And it also causes too much confusion. If someone considers someone from China/Japan/Korea,etc. as "Asian" and someone from India/Pakistan/Bangladesh as "Indian" then there are three races: Black, White, and Asian. And it's just stupid and confusing so THE END.

You mean the state of the States? The whole raging PC debate isn't really all that raging outside of USA.

I tend to adopt Judith Martin's view:

Dear Miss Manners,
*insert diatribe about the double-standard that minorities apply to racism and that feminists apply to sexism, as Tommathy is too lazy to type out all three paragraphs, begin actual reader's letter in next paragraph*
Political correctness is insidious in that it absolves a person of thinking for himself, aside from the bvious lack of logic involved. It's an attempt to prevent the free and open discussion of ideas, i.e., it's a threat to free speech and freedom in general.

Gentle Reader,
As Miss Manners understands it, you and she are in perfect agreement that there should not be a double standard that permits some people to practice racism and sexism while others may not.
Your solution is to allow everyone to do so. Miss Manners' is to discourage anyone from doing so. Fairness is certainly one of her concerns, but civility is another. She has observed that trading insults prevents and substitutes for -- rather than constitutes -- free and open discussions of ideas.

She also makes the point that Political Correctness is like cholesterol, there's a good kind and a bad kind. The bad kind obfuscates and diminishes the human discourse, the good kind keeps society civil and encourages the free *communication* of ideas. Remember that communication isn't just screaming at the top of your lungs, someone has to actually be listening. Otherwise you're just making noise.

Like saying aboriginal, or if I know the tribe, rather than "indian". Vijay Singh is Indian, not John Bear Foot.

What? This is ridiculous. Everything in the world can be broken down into very simple terms. For example, political correctness is dumb. In fact, everyone is dumb (except for me). People are sheep.

See how easy this is?

Personally, I'm of the type that, while believing some politcally correct terms go too far, I also don't think it's right to go around using racial slurs and the like, and some terms should be thrown out.

I don't really mind it... it just takes some getting used to. I got yelled at for saying merry christmas to customers, which is a rather hard habit to break. But saying happy holidays instead doesn't bother me.. I just have to remember.

If it makes everyone happy, then I don't mind.

Politically Correct=Evil
Now I can't discuss my favorite topic about interracial three-way marriages between midget hermaphrodites who are still somehow considered obese ranging form the ages of 8 and 80 and hate this country.

I'm curious as to everyone's thoughts on Political Correctness. What does being "PC" mean to you? Do you see being PC as a good thing? Is PC any different from just good old fashioned being polite?
