Can't take credit for this, but it's brilliant. Quite unlike the delusional complaints in this thread... but then, bitching about the bogeyman of "political correctness" is usually bullshit, so whatever.

WAR ON CHRISTMAS

Much has been made of the so-called “War on Christmas” this year. And as a card carrying member of the liberal conspiracy, let me tell you that it’s true. We are at war with Christmas. But what you may not know is WHY we are at war. I don’t want to scare you, but it’s time you learned something very disturbing.

Christmas has weapons of mass destruction.

There are mobile labs all over the North Pole set up with holiday anthrax just waiting to be deployed. And Christmas’ ties with Al-Qaeda are clear. Al-Qaeda is currently operating in the Middle East, the exact same place Christmas began operating over 2000 years ago. We can confirm this through our reliable source, Ru’Dulf Ran’Dier. Also, we have captured some elves, a couple of gnomes, and a midget and are currently subjecting them to extreme interrogation in covert prisons. However, we do deny the rumors that we are flushing pages of “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas” down toilets.

The impact of Christmas on society can not be underestimated. Christmas has been know to place agents in shopping malls, in front of grocery stores, and at various Christmas parties (now to be known as “Freedom Parties”), A suspected Christmas operative was seen following the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade in a makeshift assault vehicle. Some Christmas operatives have even been known to enter citizen’s homes through their chimneys. In order to prevent this, the government recommends sealing your chimney with Saran Wrap and Duct Tape.

We cannot wait for this year’s winter wonderland to be a nuclear winter wonderland. An invasion of Christmas will begin immediately, with thousands of troops being sent to the North Pole immediately, and winter weather gear to be sent at an undetermined date in the future. Our initial plan is to bomb Christmas so much that they will be both shocked and awed. Then, when we occupy the North Pole, we will be greeted as liberators by the elves. It is important that we send hundreds of thousands of troops, and hundreds of billions of dollars, so that we can fight the war on Christmas there, instead of here, where it might interfere with holiday shopping. We will bring democracy to Christmas, whether the majority of them want us there or not. But honestly, we don’t expect it to last very long.

In order to keep you up to date on the current threat that Christmas has on the nation, we have developed a color coded alert system. Currently, the threat is green, or “Holly”. However at any moment, our poll numbers could slip, at which point we’re pretty sure the threat will rise to red, or “Jolly”.

So be strong America. Deck your halls with boughs of holly, forming a defensive perimeter around your borders as well. Peace on Earth (well, our part) and Goodwill to Men (most of them). Americhristmas to all, and to all a good night.

No one got pissed because no one thought about it.

And no one thought about it because no one in their right mind really gave a damn about something so irrelevant to their lives - the tree is part of a Christian holiday (yes, Crystal Shards, I read your post and knew that stuff before anyway, but currently Christmas is a Christian holiday, one that I feel is different from Yule) and if they're not Christian, what's it matter? I understand objections on legal grounds, but even that's being anal. But then, I also think your last paragraph is the biggest load of crap I've ever seen - and part of my job involves cleaning bathrooms. I think people just need to stop getting offended so fucking easily. You don't see me or my mother going around suing schools for trying to make me say "under God" or the towns we've lived in for having Christmas decorations (and not being shy about calling them such) because we know that it doesn't do a damn thing to us to just let it be.

But hey, maybe I just don't give a fuck about differences. Maybe I just don't feel like tiptoing around in my speech in hopes of not offending some moron with too much pent-up hatred and not enough ways to release it. Actually, that sounds about right. You're different. Good for you. That doesn't mean I'm going to change how I talk to you; you don't want to be discriminated against for your different beliefs? Good. I'll talk to you just like I'd talk to a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Pagan, or a fellow Atheist.

Here we don't have the problem either. It may be because almost all chileans are catholic, which is like most of the countries in South america. And we don't force any religion over somebody. Here's just the typical consumerism of the season that all we are used to.

This war doesn´t exist in sweden either and I´m glad it doesn´t. Would probably cause riots or something.

It's called Christmas. It's merry. Therefore, Merry fucking Christmas. Deal with with it. I'm going to say it. Whether you want me to or not, I'm going to say it. And not a single soul is going to stop me.
(Speaking of the pledge, I just don't say the "under god" part; I'm not going to protest the deity b.s. becasue I believe in something different)

Okay, first off, let me say that this is total bullshit. So what that someone comes up to you to say "merry Christmas", it's just a damn phrase; there's no need to start crying about it and to start a little protest. There's more shit happening in this world and you have to worry about this? Come on, give me a break.
So where exactly are people actually protesting the "Merry Christmas" greetings of others? The links you provided said nothing about this at all. It sounds like this is being spun as the ZOMG Secular Liberal Left(tm) getting their panties in a twist, but from what I have seen (and from what I read in those links), it's the exact opposite. I have not seen any manner of organized outcry over a business' policy of putting up a Christmas tree, but I have seen Christians getting upset and threatening boycotts because various businesses and individuals have chosen to use the all-inclusive "Happy Holidays" greeting. I agree with those of you who said this is a bullshit nonissue. Private businesses can use whatever greetings and decorations they want - religious or nonreligious - and if businesses choose to use all-inclusive, non-religious greetings and decorations, it hardly constitutes an attack on the Christmas holiday, let alone a "war".

In response to a few posts on the thread - this is not comparable to the Pledge of Allegiance issue at all. The words "under God" were inserted into the pledge by a 1954 law. When President Eisenhower signed the bill into law, he stated that "From this day forward, the millions of our school children will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our Nation and our people to the Almighty." (link) This is a case of making a federal law which respects an establishment of religion. Whether or not you feel that it is an issue worth worrying about, it is a clear violation of the First Amendment. It has nothing to do with any sort of trend toward using nonspecific winter holiday greetings instead of "Merry Christmas".

Geez! This is just reminding me of the stereotype of "Kyle's mom is a big fat bitch", who always found something to complain about.

It's been pretty bad here in Australia too.
Some losers are even complaining about the Santa at malls, how the children sit on his knee.

Hell! My brother and I as very young children had a photo taken of us on "Santa" at the mall, and we were fine! ...Well, actually, it looked like I had a fresh big turd in my nappy.

Commercialization aspect aside, it's a moot point.

Fun fact: As the tree was brought in for secular reasons (or at least not specifically Christian), Christmas trees put up by governmental bodies are okay with the Supreme Court. Don't even have to call them "holiday trees" or anything else. That seems a bit overly safe if you ask me. But this war? Idiotic, asinine, and wrong-headed. It's meant to perpetuate a specific view of Christmas (the commercialized fundie view, where Jesus was born so we could buy each other Support Our Martyr Complex ribbons) which a great majority of people don't even support. It's a sad attempt at, well, I don't even know what. Maybe Focus on the Family was bored?

It's called a Christmas Tree and is identified with Christmas, replacing "Christmas" with "Holiday" would be like calling a Birthday Cake a Holiday Cake because it's not everyone's birthday. I mean, we don't call a Menorah a "Holiday Candel-holder" or anything like that, but some cities have Menorah displays.

My point exactly.
Everything else, I can understand that people are bitching about it. But CHRISTMAS TREES... if you don't celebrate christmas, don't get a tree.

Though, isn't the Religious Celebration officially termed "The Nativity of the Lord" rather than "Christmas", Christmas being a less formal name?

I can't really imagine someone being offended by something Christmassy. I mean, it has next to nothing to do with any specific religion or culture, it just kinda happened.

Christmas is the only holiday we have that's entirely devoted to being nice to people for no damn reason. I just can't find any reason to argue with that.

I always say Merry Christmas. Other people say the same to me, or sometimes say "Merry Christmas AND Happy Holidays" to cover their bases.

If someone's going to be offended because I'm trying to be nice by wishing them well on Christmas, they can go fsck themselves as far as I'm concerned. Grow up.

I just have a question about the christmas/holiday tree thing.

If you don't celebrate christmas, why would you get a tree? Therefore, if you don't celebrate christmas, why do you care whether or not a major part of that holiday has the word christmas in it?
I heard the holiday tree issue on the news, and this question has been buzzing around in my head since.

I don't have a problem with people saying "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Hannukah" or referring to their trees as a "Christmas Tree". My only real objection is (particularly in reference to the latter) when it is done in a civil/public/government capacity: if the display is publically-owned, then it ought to be "Holiday Tree" or no tree at all, I think. But privately-owned displays (in homes, stores, etc) can be called whatever the hell they want and I don't have a problem with it.

Similarly, I think government ought to say "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings" or other non-denomination/-culture-specific things: but individuals (in a non-government capacity) can use whatever expression they like and I hold no objection.

Why do I single government out like that? Because it is supposed to represent all of its constituents, not just some. Private (non-government) institutions and people aren't held to that standard.

I myself don't really think all that much of the holiday season (let alone one of the particular holidays of that season, Christmas) so I don't go around saying Happy Whatever, though if I did I'd stick with "Happy Holidays".

No one got pissed because no one thought about it. Now the issue has been raised and people are thinking about it.

The heart of Political Correctness is in showing basic respect to all and not just to some. And the growing tendency towards political correctness makes people think about things they hadn't thought about before, and they often cling to the older ways and decry the change as "PC", but eventually many "PC" things wind up being commonly accepted as showing basic respect. Would you, for example, call a black person a "nigger"? Back in the day it was considered quite all right to do that, and I'm sure there was much griping about "PC" (or whatever they called it back then) when people started figuring out it's disrespectful. Now people (usually) recognize it as such and accordingly do not use it.

(Note: I'm not saying "Christmas Tree" is even remotely as bad as "nigger": I'm illustrating an example of a PC change that has become accepted with time.)

You use "PC" as a derogatory term: like only pussy-whipped sissy-boys (and girls, though "sissy" is redundant when describing them: that is the only acceptable gender role for a girl to have, and to think otherwise is PC and therefore bad) would be PC, and those who don't are tough and strong and uncompromising and admirable in their resolve. But I think it is the other way: those who consciously try to be PC are strong enough to challenge people to think about what they had never given thought to before, to show respect to groups when it was normal to not show respect to those groups (and thus, in a way, to fight for them), and to maintain that resolve even in the backlash of those who cling to the old ways on the basis that they're not used to the new ways.

And if you label all that as PC, then I'll say "thank you".

I am so telling everyone to have a Happy Christmahanakwanza.

A few points of trivial interest:

-At the time that North America was discovered, India was called Hinduasia, and it's citizens were not called Indians.
-According to the bible, (I remember reading this personally, but tragically do not remember the verse) Christ's birthday is actually somewhere closer to September or October.
-Christmas has nothing to do with Christ; it was constructed as a means of making it an easier transition for heathen pagans to convert to Christianity by continuing to allow them to celebrate Winter Solstice, or Yule.
-The word Pagan finds it's roots in Latin pagani, or 'peasant'. Simply put, Paganism was the poor man's religion- since your average farmer could not afford nor read a bible- until the crusades forced it upon them.

Thank you.

Yet stores or places of public business are not allowed to say Merry Christmas, because it offends the Jewish people (I wonder if Jesus is offended by the religion he started because he was Jewish).
The funny thing is that today I was saying Merry Christmahanakwanzika.

Blah! I think that people should use whatever phrase they want to and not forcing another phrase upon another person.

Christmas Tree/Holiday tree, shit the same but I´ve always said Christmas tree. And you don´t have to be christian to celebrate christmas. Why do people think that? Well, IF they think that.

"The majority of them are conservative Christian males, who normally would be all "Celebrate Jesus' birthday, yay, yay, yay!!!"

Bah! I wouldn´t be able to stand that. Sure, I´m christian but I´m not religious.

And I´m getting quite tired on the christmas shows myself. Especially the Donald Duck one. Heck, I´ve seen it since I was born or something.

And no, you shouldn´t force another belief onto another person.

Well, you know, unlike some things, Christmas and co. don't offend me. Most of us in my family are athiests, and hey, look, we're playing Christmas songs and have a Christmas tree up and the whole nine yards. If they're gonna get all touchy about religion, why don't they take 'God' out of our money and our pledge of allegiance, huh? Huh? Who cares if someone says Merry Christmas? I mean, come on. Go ahead with whatever holidays you want; it's the non-seasonal things which bug me.
