Is this what you're looking for? |

It becomes like the words "good" and "bad" to consider something; surely, is it wrong to question what is something? Arwon seems to think so. (Personally, I'd reached a end somewhat like Tommathy's for a definition before I even posted this thread.) I don't expect the perfect, universal definition of art, but at the same time, I expect a bit more than "in the eye of the beholder." |

"What is art?" is as much a matter of individual taste as "What is good art". Depending on who you ask you'll get different answers, and none of them will necessarily be right or wrong. |

What are you looking for, exactly, Samurai? A neat succinct definition of the sum total of human creative output? Ain't gonna happen. The thing with definitions is that by their very nature they set boundaries and criteria, and if there's one thing art is good for it's pushing and questioning boundaries and criteria.
You're not gonna get anything deeper or more profound than "art is basically anything people want it to be". Actually, is that the point you're seeking to demonstrate? |

It can be usual, but can't be looked at in the usual way.
Usual things regarded in the usual way are mundane, it's the investment of effort by the artist and the beholder that make something special. |

Art is communication and expression outside the purview of everday utterances. |

That it is difficult to define and basically limited only by the imagination of artists. |
SamuraiX Posts: 290/302 |
But that doesn't really answer the question, really. If you point to everything, and call it art, what does that tell about art? |

I would say a general term for art is just anything that can be created: If you can create something, there is an art to doing something.
I actually visited an art musuem today, for the first time ever. which contained everything from elaborate paintings of beatiful ocean waves to naked women to gigantic sculptures to masks, to abstract paintings, boxes poking out of a wall, a yellow triangle on a wall, to broken glass. To a fucking photoshop of a picture. Most of which I felt could be drawn better by half the people I knew, but for whatever reason, they're worth millions. I personally believe that something is considered art if a person other than the person who created it considers it art, but in reality, everything is art. |

Art, a creation from a human usually in a recreational form.
That's what I call it. |

Let me put it this way. If one wanted to explain to someone who didn't know the word "art" what art was, how would one go about doing so? |
Ziff Posts: 1786/1800 |
Originally posted by SamuraiXOriginally posted by Ziff I agree on that. I mean, art is hard to pindown. A lot of people say is that if it conveys a message or creates an emotion. Some forms of art distinctly try to eschew such ideas, namely...pomo. |

hmm...what is art....hard to say....maybe its just a design of some sort brought together by the imagination of the human mind....other than that i have no clue |

Originally posted by Ziff I was kidding. But really, I think that's a bit too broad of a definition. |
