My brother visited Boston last year, and he said that it's the only city he's been in that has signs at every street corner saying "If you see anything suspicious call the police immediately!!"
Sounds like a paranoid-as-fuck town and I'm not surprised. |

I agree with the former. The latter strikes me as ridiculously amusing. Originally posted by EmptyeyeBombs may not have to look like anything, but they do have to obey the laws of physics. Their entire purpose is to contain a massive amount of pressure and then explode in a destructive manner. A plastic box about a foot square and less than half an inch thick can't contain enough material or pressure to do any significant amount of damage. Not even C4 plastic, one of the most powerful explosives, can do catastrophic damage in such a small quantity. According to this Army manual, it takes 6 pounds of C4 to demolish a 3 feet 9 inches thick concrete target. Even if the batteries behind the sign were filled with C4, they wouldn't add up to nearly that much. And C4 can't be set off without a blasting cap, which would have a wire trailing away from the sign towards some sort of trigger. Sure, you couldn't see how thin the sign was from far away, nor could you see whether something might be hiding behind it, but I'd think that the police would have scoped out the signs from afar before moving in to knock them down and investigate. I'd think they would have some idea that, even if the signs were explosive, they would be extremely ineffective munitions, and therefore they could check one out before going on red alert or bringing in the feds. Originally posted by EmptyeyeThere's a long continuum between "doing nothing" and "spending half a million dollars and calling in the Pentagon". I'm laughing at the degree of the response. Remember the Mario ? coin blocks that some people hung around their town? They were large and cubical, and if they were bombs, they could have actually done decent damage. The police investigated the boxes without calling Code Apeshit. I agree with your assessment of the media's reaction. Now that's something we can all poke a stick at. |

I'm going to disagree with a lot of what's been said here and state that the Boston PD reacted how they should have, and good for them.
Number one, despite what you want to believe, there's no set rules for "what a bomb looks like", plus the fact that not everyone knows what ATHF even is, plus the fact that it wasn't nearly as easy to discern what was on the boxes in broad daylight, turned off, on an overpass as opposed to the lit closeups you see in media reports (In other words, from far off, they very well could have looked like bombs). Number two, part of the reason a lot of the other cities didn't freak out was because the devices weren't placed in areas where (Had they been bombs) they would've done major damage, and a lot of them were simply stolen outright. Number three, I'm sure pretty much everyone here who is laughing at Boston for "being paranoid" or whatever would rush to crucify the Boston PD if they had done nothing and the devices HAD turned out to be bombs. Now, the PRESS, on the other hand, took this and blew it way the fuck out of proportion. From media reports, you'd think that this was the first time a potential bomb had ever been discovered in Boston (According to people who live there, partly because the city is more or less constantly on edge, "suspicious devices" and the Boston PD's reaction to them are fairly common there). Not to mention the loaded language calling the reports "hoax"es, which implies some intent to cause panic in a legal sense, which there was none of here. |

Actually, no.
I take it you haven't seen the WB toons from that era. Anti-Hitler propaganda. They're kinda funny. Google WWII cartoons or something if you wanna check them out. |

Look at me! I'm an explosive! Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha! Really. Why couldn't they have disassembled one BEFORE panicking? |

This calls for something stupid to happen... I mean really, you see a pixelated cartoon character flipping off on a bill-board and then you think "TERRORISTS!!!! OH MY GOD!!!"... I swear, many people in this country=paranoid to the fullest... |

...and I think to myself: what a wonderful wooooorrlld!
So yeah, it seems like nobody really knows what ATHF is. ...and when I say that, I mean all of the non-internet-junkie-stay-up-all-night people. |

This is almost as bad as when the bomb squad was called in because someone hung a few Super Mario Bros boxes throughout the town :/ |

This is one of the most unintentionally hilarious news stories ever. What's next - we'll have to produce ID and sign a register to buy Lite Brites?
There's a van around here spray painted DANGER CART #1. With the crossed-out messed-up letter and everything. I wonder if it's going to get blown up under suspicion of terrorism. |
