I have multiple legitimate product keys for XP, both home and pro from various junk PCs I've picked up here and there. =P So yeah, I don't need anything like that. Just gotta find me a disc. I'm sure I can get the hookup from somebody in town. |

WGA is known to pass at illegitmate keys obtained a certain way  But I shouldn't go futher.
Also, dual booting Windows and Ubuntu can't really get much easier. Just install Windows first, then install Ubuntu; Ubuntu will automatically set up a boot menu for you. |

I wasn't wanting to install Ubuntu not knowing if it would be a waste of time. I guess I will now though. Can't hurt to check it out.
As far as getting Windows online... I downloaded a copy for a friend once and if failed validation. I'd rather not have that happen. All I really wanna do is a non-destructive repair install... but everyone I know has XP home and my install was XP Pro. I suppose now I'll just say eff it, repartition the drive, and install XP home on say... a 10 gig space and Ubuntu onto the rest and dual boot. Now I get to learn how to do a dual boot again =P I don't think I've tried it since Win98/Dos 6.22 ...though that ended in a catastrophe because I'd downloaded a bad copy of DOS =P |

Hint: Never use anything with the name Norton. I guess this is the unfortunate first-hand experience now.
And I guess you could get Windows XP online if you want.
about Ubuntu: if you're just using hte LiveCD, then NTFS partitions aren't mounted by default, but it does support them. If you installed Ubuntu, you wouldn't have to do these commands, but here: mkdir /mnt/windows mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows Also, it's unlikely that you'll be able to play the videos since iirc Ubuntu only comes with Ogg codecs (vorbis, theora, etc). If you install the proper codes using hte LiveCD, it'll be gone next time you boot it; you can obviously avoid that by installing Ubuntu. |

Meh. I hate posting from the laptop. Crappy spacebar and whatnot...
Anyway... my Windows died last weekend. I installed a game I downloaded via torrent and I'm guessing it didn't like it. No biggie, that sort of thing happens in Windows all the time. I gave my XP cd to a friend who lives out of state while he was in for the holidays. I figured I could dothat since I had done a backup using Norton Ghost as soon as I had everything installed and updated the last time I did a fresh install. Guess that was a bad idea. I had a hell of a time restoring the image when booting from the Ghost cd. It kept wanting to randomly fail while writing files. I ended up having to recover folder by folder rather than restoring the image as a whole. Now when I try to boot from the HD it says "NTDLR missing. Hit ctrl+alt+del to reboot." WTF? I know that file is in the right places. I checked using a CD bootable Windows shell. Is there anything I can do short of picking up an overpriced copy of Vista? Also... I just booted Ubuntu from CD. I've never used Linux before, I'm a noob. Apparently it can't read NTFS partitions? What can I do to view/transfer the files on the other drive if I decide to go Linux? Anything? I'd rather not have to split up seasons of MST3K to an assload of DVDs... Misc. Linux tips would be nice too, as I'm considering doing a dual boot when my new 500Gb HD comes in the mail. Or should I even bother if only one of the systems can read the drive I keep my audio/video on? |
