I stand by my belief that Illusion of Gaia (Or Time, in PAL) is better than Terranigma, despite Terranigma being the sequel.
But that's just my opinion. |

Yeah, it's definitely Pastel-adin's Quest, but you cast spells with HP, hire mercenaries as party members, and can control combat with only your left hand. Still, it's second-rate to others mentioned already. But the somewhat-artsy style of things was appealing even if the majority of colors were best suited for baby-clothing.
I just acquired Live a Live last night, and so far it's damn good. I've only started the Cowboy quest, but it's already made me wish I had less time to spend reading for class. Thanks to anyone who's suggested that! |

The pictures I saw of Paladin's Quest looked like a bunch of pastel colors stuck together. Bad first impression. |

Well, nobody's mentioned Paladin's Quest yet. It's hardly comparable to other RPGs mentioned already, but it made a good impression on me.
And yes, Earthbound FTW. |

Lufia 2 was awesome as well... though I didn't know nor find the Ancient Cave before playing it in an emulator. I used savestate loading twice in beating it, once when I tab-boosted through an unexpectedly tough battle and died and once when I miscalculated my step count on one of the lower floors with those really fast guys abundant.
Ancient Slime appreciated me as a great warrior for knowing when it's the right moment to commit seppuku, apparently. |

It should speed up if you hold the A button. |

I will definitely get to some of those other classics soon enough, but for now it's the Rudras that are occupying my attention.
(Newbish question: how do you speed up the text on the screen? It's slooooooooooo...ooo...ooow.) Moppy, I loved Tales of Phantasia. Played it on PSX over a New Year holiday when I was sick for six straight days. I knew nothing about the game at the time except for its sterling reputation (and the contents of Tales of Destiny, which was also good). The ending confused me a bit (and the mechanics of its time travel), but what a wonderful adventure that was. |

I was sitting around just now and then I remember Breath Of Fire 2. Greatest RPG. Ever. |

You should definitely play Tales of Phantasia. |

My best friend has done that...not knowing how to kill the final "boss", thinking he killed it, yet didn't get rewarded.
Anyone got all of the Ancient Cave artifacts? What happens? I've read that a couple of you guys have played/are playing through Secret of Mana and Terranigma in their original Japanese forms. How do the stories differ? PLEASE! I love these two games to death, and I need to know! They're the two best games of all time IMO. I quite hated the ending of Terranigma. The game got released here in Australia, too BTW. Spoiler (Terranigma Ending Confusion):I'm not quite sure I ever understood it properly.
Does Ark die, then get reborn as that baby (or "babe" as they call it), then that's it? Pretty lame IMO. Bloody Mary wasn't the only hard boss. I killed her taking only 1s off her, too. Every time I've played the game, I've only taken that much off tha' bitch. Two hours is a bit of an exageration. More like half an hour. Anyway! Remember Eklemata? That snowy place with the Yetis and hot springs? I've fought that morphing boss a few times at lower-than-reccomended levels. He's a bitch when you take off hardly anything. Way worse than Bloody Mary. |

I remember renting Lufia and liking it... but Lufia 2 just makes the first one look outdated.
Fantastic RPG. Good luck beating the Ancient Cave without cheating. |

Back when I played it, there were no strategy guides, no GameFAQs, and noe of my friends had played it. Sink or swim! Getting to the end brought a real feeling of accomplishment. And that said, I chose Rudra no Hihou, English patch 2.00, as my late-SNES-era RPG and it has not disappointed in the least! |

Lufia 2 is the only correct answer. Well, that I've given so far. (ahem) Not so big on the first one, actually. |

Enix; they made some unheralded classics! If your Japanese is up to the challenge (and even if it isn't; just muddle through somehow!), I highly recommend Winder Project J. Obscure, yes, but a whole lot of fun!
I just downloaded the translated Star Ocean; I played that in Japanese on a cart around 1998 and loved it. Have to choose different characters this time. That was my second Tri-Ace game (after Tales of Destiny); those guys sure can put together a fun adventure. Ever notice how a lot of games from that era used multiple main characters so that you could go through the game several times? At the time I found that to be a turnoff, thinking that I wanted to experience a game in its entirety and not have to do things over and over, but now with savestates and cheats, the idea of many runthroughs is less daunting. And Gideon, I had no idea about that latest patch for Rudra! Looking at those slides, I'm about to abandon my Japanese-original efforts and play yours instead! (This VWF implementation everywherre sure is impressive -- I'd like to get one of those in the baseball games I hack! And F-Zero Climax...) All this talk about games of a decade ago is a great trip down memory lane... there are just so many good ones. I'm going to give Rudra 2.00 a shot, then maybe finish SMRPG and Tenchi Sozo (Terranigma). How many hours does that game take? Mine seemed to last forever, and I'm not sure how far I was through it when I got stuck. |

Then again I'm kind of saying that as of now. I can't really remember what it was like back in the day. But yeah, either way. The US didn't get that gem. |

Again, would have been released in late 1996 or so and I don't think any company wanted to spend that amount of time on a translation at that point. The SNES was fading. |

Hmm, I guess its nice to finally have that cleared up.
Still, I'll continue to hate on Square / whoever it was that prevented the US from getting Seiken Densetsu 3. |

Wikipedia says that Enix had closed up shop by then in America which would have also explained no Dragon Quest VI... Nintendo Power was hyping it up a bit. |
