If they would hurry their ass up with fiber optic lines and think about the human race profiting from this and not just their pockets, then we would be doing great.

Exactly. There could be a huge boost overnight but it'll still be ages before you're paying reasonable amounts for that speed, just because they can squeeze more out of you by dragging it on.

640kb was never enough with all the damn expanded/extended memory nonsense. Going through hoops just to play certain games that needed exactly X amount of conventional memory...

I always thought my Celeron was fast when I first got it. Fun times...

Japan and Sweden have 100MBit lines (UPLOAD), and I think Japan is even in the 1Gbit lines range.

We have 1-6Mbit on average.

I'm thinking more like 170 times faster...

Umm...yeah...

I think I'll just continue to buy hard drives.

But that quote was from Gates, if I'm not mistaken. Hell I remember my 12MHz 286 VGA enhanced system with 1024K of RAM with the turbo button and 40MB hard drive that was split 32/8 for reasons unexplained playing Scorched Earth on it with no problems whatsoever.

That PC soundboard was BAD ASS. You don't HEAR PC speakers that loud anymore.

You don't know how much you rock.

As for the storage, I"ll never be able to afford it, so frankly I don't care at all. I'll use the mother-fucking ENIAC.

Not necessarely. The internet would also be a lot faster.

Yeah, video at 6GB/min... seems a bit excessive. Though I can see media companies pushing it if only because such massive movies would take ages to download.

I think that's stretching that a bit. I have a old TV in my family house, and while it's 15 years old, it's still ok. Mind you that HDTV did exist around the time it was bought as well... well the technology at least.

Hah, yes, I've seen old computers where I could actually play MP3s through the speaker louder than some external speakers that had their own power supply.
256MB of VRAM is pretty decent, though I suppose it may be a bit low for high-end games. I have 128MB myself, but the card is total junk. :-/

Oh, and why do you (Hiryuu) make me feel bad for having 256MB of RAM? I hardly use it all anyway.

Not quite. I remember my 88MB of disk space and 16 (or 8?) MB of RAM being pretty awesome, until the hard drive pooped out.

Hell, look at the NES's 2KB of RAM!

Windows Jupiter...just because you think you have free space we'll prove you wrong.

:EDIT: and what happens if you just managed to make a $180 coaster? I can see the money being wasted now.

It's a good thing for Microsoft that these massive disks are being created. They'll need all that space for whatever extra bloat their next OS includes.

Well I'll be damned, it's finally happened. Now let's see them come down to reasonable prices.

One possible use of course for a 300GB disc is uber-high quality video and audio; I'm sure they'd hold a few uncompressed DVD movies. Though there'd be little point in not compressing them anyway.
And instead of DRM, they'll just include a copy of Vista on the disc and force you to install that.

I've been hearing about this for years, never expected it would actually happen by now. Though, it seems that a Blu-ray burner with rewritable discs is still cheaper than this Hell, hard disks are cheaper.

Still pretty impressive though. Also, I'd totally store every DVD I own on my hard disk uncompressed if I had the capacity (though it seems plausible with the 1TB drives coming their way).

Porn, mostly. You can't use blu-ray for porn. Sony forbids it.

That or they'll use it to hold a super duperly LARGE game that uses 64-bit bitmaps and hour long cutscenes.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
