I don't care about graphics, as long as I know what the crap's going on.

I absolutely love high end sprites, like SNES/PSX era and up (Star Ocean 2, Tales, and a ton of other PSX RPG's could be an example).

The character sprites in Star Ocean 2 looked terrible, though.

Eh .... yeah, you're right they were pretty bad. Oh well, the awesome [everything else] in the game makes up for it.

And that's what makes a game. Sure, pretty art is nice, but if all you want is art, go watch a movie or look at a picture.

Graphics help convey things, and nobody can say that games on modern systems aren't affected by the graphics. The thing is, the graphic style of the game means much more than the graphic specs. Games are all about design, and while art helps portray that, what truly matters is how you are interacting with the game itself.

I'm in it for the story. If the story will capture my attention screw the graphics.
That is the number one reason I HATE FF12. The story was so utterly boring 10 chimpanzees could have drooled better slop than that.

That's a shame...
My PCjr was given away a long time ago, but I still have my Tandy 1000 and Commodore 128 =)

Graphics are as important as the gameplay only because if there weren't any, it wouldn't be a Video game.
How good the graphics are is a different story...
The first game system I had ever played was the Atari 2600, and I didn't care about the graphics even though the NES was out by then. The cool part about it was, I didn't care. I still think those games are still fun to play. The only games I don't like are those with truly ugly graphics.
In short, I grew up on "bad" graphics, and I still play games with "bad" graphics, that have better gameplay then games with "good" graphics.

Another thing that really bugs me is when one game is almost too pretty, then every other game looks ugly. An example would be Gears of War. Definitely one of the slickest games I've ever seen, but when I start seeing everyone compare other games to GoW's "graphics" only, it just gets annoying.

"The graphics suck compared to Gears!" - Oh well, its a different team. They have a different style, engine, game, everything ... egads!

Maybe I've just been around GameFAQ's a bit too much lately.

A game is a game. Gameplay is an inherent part of a game, and so I generally care most about the gameplay; I don't care much about plot, graphics, realism, etc., so long as the gameplay is good.
That said, some games will focus on other aspects; RPGs tend to emphasize plots. Sports games tend to emphasize realism. In such cases, it's less a video game, and more a story, or a basketball game (or whatever) - in which case it's more appropriate to judge the plot or realism.
I'm personally not interested in realism in games, and so I *don't* bother judging sports games - I have no other interests in them anyways. I'm not much interested in stories, and so I don't *much* judge RPGs - and frankly the gameplay in RPGs tends to be boring to me.
It's the same thing with graphics; it can be a nice touch (while being serious, ludicrous, or whatever), but it's not something I'm much interested in as far as games go.

Voted 'I don't care about graphics at all', because quality of graphics will not change whether or not I play a game. I play rogue-likes and old DOS games all the time, after all.
My 2600 got sold several years back though. And my commodore 64.

I'm more of an in-between on this question because each part of a video game counts when considering what makes a game great or playable. Story (if applicable), gameplay, graphics, etc. all are equal factors more or less in games that I enjoy. I actually have a habit of enjoying older games more than newer games that have the beautiful 3D graphics thanks to other factors concerning those games.

It doesn't really make a game but it's a nice extra. The actual meaning of the game means 10x more than the graphics themselves. If you had beautiful graphics and sucky gameplay I'd rather have the opposite.

Beat me to it!

God Hand was fun, absolutely terrible graphics. It came out a few months ago and looked like a Dreamcast launch title or something. But, it didn't ruin the game for me.

For me, graphics are a nice edition to the game. If they're awesome, I'll probably complement them. If they're not, it probably wouldn't make a difference at how I look at the game.

The kind of people that really piss me off, are the people who say they can't go back and play PSX games or whatnot because of the "terrible graphics". They were probably revolutionary at the time, and should it even really matter? I mean, I might give a chuckle at how some of the stuff in the old Resident Evil games looks or something, but it won't stop me from playing and doesn't make me look down at the game at all.

I think emcee put it best with the ice cream.

Usually, I care less about a game's graphics. The only time I've found myself giving a flaming kiwi sack about graphics is when the entire franchise boasts of their graphics. If they do that, then they better deliver.

Oh, and also, if I buy a $600 piece of shit equipment, I better expect to get some damn good graphics out of it. But, hence my vote, I don't have one. I wouldn't have one long anyways because of the fact that it wouldn't last longer than a fucking Yugo.

Graphics are nice but I'm more about the gameplay. I'll take an extremely replayable game with a few graphic problems like clipping and that over a beautiful game that's over in 10 hours.

I will play a game with shitty game play and shitty graphics if it has one of the best stories ever.

I will also play a game that has awesome game play as long as the graphics don't make my eyes bleed. (See: Beyond the Beyond)

I beat the PCjr version of Jumpman on Grand Loop like... the day before yesterday. I still give my oldies teh love.

Pretty graphics are nice... but I can say with total honesty that if the great gameplay is there, then graphics don't mean a thing to me. Having both is also great, but graphics are just a bonus unless a game is brand new and shows off a brand new standard of state of the art gorgeousness.

Certainly the majority of my favorite games are graphically challenged. The gameplay and possible story/plot have stood the test of time. Good gameplay will always be good gameplay. Good graphics will be outdated sooner or later.

Video games are like a bowl of ice cream.

Stay with me on this, it makes sense

The ice cream itself is the game play, while nice graphics is like that butterscotch sauce they put on top. The sauce definitely makes it better, but I don't care how much butterscotch sauce you put on it I just can't eat a bowl of dirt flavored ice cream.

So, I guess nice graphics can make a good game better, but not a bad game good.

I like that analogy. I'll add another point to it.
Most people wouldn't wanna eat just a big bowl of the chocolate syrup or butterscotch topping either. They gotta have something underneath to really be palatable.

How to explain..

I care about visual appeal, which does not necessarily mean high quality graphics.

If a game has high quality graphics, but I don't like the style in which those graphics are presented, then I probably won't be interested.
Similarly, if a game has lower quality graphics, but I do like the style, then I will be interested.

But there's also a difference between a game's graphics being a 'lower quality' (such as games you might find on the NES), and said graphics being just plain bad.
If a game has a good graphical style, but the graphics themselves are poorly done, then I will probably lose interest in short order.

So basically, yes, I care about graphics. Just not because they're shiny.

OMG...how many times a day do I hear people going on about a game/system being so amazing because of the graphics alone. "The Ps3 is the best because of the graphics!" I'm sick of it. I find myself always saying: "Its not about the graphics. If the game play is down right crappy (story, chars, and so on) then no amount of killer graphics can make up for it." Sure, higher end graphics are pretty and all, but give me storyline and game play any day, then the graphics. Its like when I tell people that FF6 is a terrific game, but then I get remarks about the graphics. Who the hell cares!! The story itself is amazing.

I want good graphics, regardless of the console. Like, if the game was equally fun, I'd rather play a nice looking NES game than an SNES or Genesis game with badly drawn sprites, even if they have more colors.
So, as close to "perfection" as possible within the console limitations...
