And out of all of those, 8 was probably the most bitchin' one. I think the story was the best the series had to offer, and the music was amazing. I still get chills when I here the "Vinos, Lusec" music.

As far as RPG's go, Final Fantasy pale in comparison to my favorite, Lunar: Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue. Those games were pure gold... especially Silver Star Story.

Ah yes, Working Designs rocked! I still have a soft spot for Arc the Lad 2 (too bad the series went to crap after that).

Its a shame newer Working Designs games sucked, like Growlancer.

Say what you want about mystic quest, but I had never played an RPG prior to playing FF Mystic Quest, and I found it quite charming. Yeah, FFIV (FFII at the time ) kicked my ass when I did get around to playing it but Mystic Quest had some things that no Final Fantasy has. It has puzzles you have to solve; and while most of them are easy, I can't think of an FF where you can actually move objects around on the screen or interact with them using items. You have a claw to climb walls with and the best claw allowed you to cross gaps. Axes allowed you to cut down trees and mushrooms to clear your path. And the sword triggered hidden switches.

And while to even a casual RPG player the game mechanics will seem ridiculously simplistic, it gave me a pretty good taste of how RPGs worked without making it overly difficult. It has a level system, magic, HP, and the basic status ailments like poison and stone are there.

And there are even aspects of it that I find superior to "better" RPGs, one being that you can actually see your enemies. Random encounters annoy me to no end in RPGs... you can only do that so long before you get fed up and just want to explore.

Earthbound, FF is nothing compared to these.

Earthbound

Play it. Just play it. Don't ask questions, take everything you see at face value, sit down, put aside about 20-40 hours, and play it.

And whatever you do, don't attack the Trillionage Sprout when you're mushroomated.

XII just sucked balls. If you can beat it at only level 30 then there is a problem that needs to be adressed. Mystic Quest must be destroyed at all costs. X-2 was a failure (in my opinion). And the rest of the series was good. XI doesn't count whatsoever.

Vagrant Story > Final Fantasy XII. In every way, music and everything.

Then again, like I said I've just gotten 25 hours or so into FFXII, so I can't really say.

But yeah, Vagrant Story is definitely another one of Square's "awesome but unheard of" RPG's.

You got a PS2, and FF1, 2 and 4-6 were ported to the PSX, so you do have access to the majority of the series (not to mention that these ports keep their original number, so there's no confusion to be had - if it's for a Sony console, the number on the box is correct).
That said, the one you should pick up is Final Fantasy Origins, the collection of the first 2 FF games. Both are among the best in the series, and unlike the GBA remakes and most likely the upcoming PSP remakes, the gameplay was NOT ruined in the process of updating the game. Beautiful stuff, and mighty recommended.

As for your first question, no, it's not as good a series as you'd think. It may have many fans willing to tell you how awesome it is, but many of these have never play any RPGs not titled Final Fantasy. The series also took a serious nosedive when it went 3D with FF7, culminating in the crapfest that was FF8, but never managing to get back to the quality of the early games, so try focusing on the earlier games first.

But again, there are better series out there you'd rather want to play, like Earthbound, Phantasy Star and the brilliant Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior series. FF is nothing compared to these.

Uhmm.... Okay. I'm planning on trying out Earthbound one of these days, by the way. I wanted to ever since Super Smash Bros. Melee. So... I'll try and look for that one you mentioned I should check out.

It only takes you 15 hours at MOST to play through Mystic Quest.

It's the simplest RPG ever but it's not absolutely horrid. Just... not great.

Are you crazy?

The following is a perfectly good reason to play the game.

Dark King, we meet at last...

Indeed, and now you will serve me...

I don't think so!
We won't allow you to ruin our
World.

Alas, silly humans, I must share

Also, everything associated with that.

Oh, and Xenogears. That's one PSX RPG I've been meaning to play, for far too long. Luckily you can still buy it off "Squaresofts" online store for $20, from what I remember.

And yes, both KOTOR's rocked my world. Jade Empire, not that much actually ...

SKIES OF ARCADIA, PEOPLE. Oh, and Grandia on DC. That was fun-core. LunarStory. I'd check out Xenogears. Oh, Shin Megami Tensei.

Hell, even SW: KOTOR is a pretty bitching RPG.

I - has aged terribly poorly. Dawn of Souls version not too bad. Worth a try after you get into series.
II - it is like going from single cell organism to small rat sized jelly fish. A step in the right direction
III - another astronomic jump in quality. But, yeah. DD said it, enjoyable but only play the DS version
IV - S'alright. I haven't a thing against it, it just didn't capture my imagination too too much.
V - HOLY SHIT. The series teeth are out in full gear.
VI - Hallelujah god above. A nearly peffect game.
VII - I have fond memories of the game itself, but it just hasn't aged.
VIII - call me heretic. I really liked 8, even more than 7
IX - I'd say it is a head above 7, but I just didn't get into it like I did with 8
X - <3 an amazing game, you'll love it.
XI - Lame MMO steer clear
XII - I'd save 12 for a bit. It is a really good game, but play the SNES and PS1 games first before getting into this one. It...really deviates from the two hours I've played.
Tactics - <3 probably the best thing to have FF attached to it.
FFTA - not as deep as its forebear, but absolutely fun.
MYSTIC QUEST - Why aren't you playing this game right now? Seriously. Why? Oh, wait. If you see this cartridge, destroy it. It may not be FF proper, but fucking kill it. Microwave.
Other stuff - reh X-2. Reh DoC. Reh whatever else I'm missing. Chocobo Racing? Hell yeah. Chocobo Dungeon? Hell nah. Crystal Chronicles is fun...If you have 4 people with GBAs.

Well... it's not like the job system in Tactics wasn't based heavily on Final Fantasy 5 or anything...

I'd like to say that the idea was pitched and then the FF creatures and characters were written in to sell more copies... because I honestly believe that's how Square operates... but so many of the classes have very FF specific abilities... I'm gonna go with Tactics probably having been intended as a spinoff from the start.

Now, all that aside... I think FFT is my favorite game to bear the name.
FFTA was crap and a total waste of the 70 or so hours I put in to have a perfect game...

Final Fantasy Tactics, much like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, is not a Final Fantasy Game.

It's a "Let's try something new and hope to Odin that it works but just in case let's put the Final Fantasy name on it to familiarize audiences".

That said, Final Fantasy Tactics is far and away the best game in the entire run of games Square has made, and I will say that with confidence in my opinion.

Other than Tactics, the only ones I really liked were IV, VII, and IX. I just plain couldn't get into VI, no matter how I tried (and believe me, I tried). IV was my favorite after Tactics, I loved its classic style, and unlike any of the other FF games, it was the only one I felt the need to play through several times before putting it down at last.

VII is just cool. I don't care what you people say about fanboys or fangirls or cloud gay sephiroth slash fiction, there really really was something cool, back in 1997, about a guy wielding a sword that was bigger than him while summoning huge monsters with flashy visual effects and a confusing plot that left a large amount to the imagination. VII started that entire craze, created the modern "generic RPG" cliche, and above that really was a good, solid game with characters you grew interested in and wanted to learn more about. It is a good game. It is overrated now, and there is no reason to freak out over it, but Final Fantasy VII is definitely a good game.

I liked IX because it reminded me of IV. After VII and VIII (ugh), two games where characters were easily customizable and everyone could become whatever they wanted to with the right Materia, it was nice to see a game where a fighter was a fighter, a mage was a mage, and thieves sucked for everything but running the hell away, just like the balance of power in the world dictated. The characters and story were a little meh, but the game was clearly much more lighthearted and whimsical than the previous several FF games, which were dark, depressing, and sterile. FFIX was a storybook tale, and it at least deserves some accolade for showing that Square still knew how to make classical RPGs that weren't set in a futuristic wasteland.

I could write a Bachelor-level thesis about how much I hate FFVIII, though...

That said, FF will never really hold a candle to serieses like Chrono, Breath of Fire, Suikoden, or even Kingdom Hearts, if you wanna call that an RPG. Breath of Fire III was excellent, with fun gameplay and characters that you really liked watching interact. Suikoden I, II, and III were excellent tales of political intrigue and the gradual unraveling of the world around the characters, as the gamer realizes that yes, in fact, this is really only one small country inside of a much larger world that is struggling around it.

And of course, I believe Earthbound speaks for itself...

So having Cloud, Aeris, and all the major summons in that game doesn't make it an FF game. I see.

it gives it the link to final fantasy, but i don't consider it a final fantasy game simply because its gameplay is not like the traditional rpgs of the series.
