Exactly... it's not exactly that common for someone young to get lung cancer from smoking UNLESS they lived around smokers all their lives, and their home had asbestos, and so on.  Emphysema sounds closer to the mark, which still sucks but at least you can take steps to slow it down. |

So..yea...my hubby miscommunicated wrong. My friend does not have lung caner, but has something like enfazima (yea, I know I spelled that wrong), that could lead to lung caner if he does not stop smoking. *phew* Hopefully he'll listen to the doctors. |

I've seen not one but two people racked by various kinds of Cancer. So far I've seen the best you can do is ensure they get their medicine, don't get depressed, and hope for the best. It's really hard to predict--the mother of my father's friend somehow survived many years with lung cancer, smoking through all the way, fighting off three other diseases just to finish a will; my Grandfather appears to be surviving some pretty horrible chemo despite being 80+ and not exactly in good shape to begin with.
However, treatments to remove lung cancer that do not weaken the patient overall are becoming a reality... in a good 20 years maybe they can help stem the tide. |

Yeah, it's interesting how things like that affect people. Particularly as you start to notice people you wouldn't have thought even cared are actually affected by it, and people are nicer to each other to help one another through stuff.
I hope your friend(s) are okay. Hopefully your mate can get some of that exercise and stuff and it will make a big difference.  |

I'm sorry to hear that.
Have the doctors indicated how bad they think things are? Did they catch it early?

Same thing happened to my grandpa. He got it, and he struggled so hard to work. He loved to work. Cancer took a good chance of 30 more years of life.
However, I still say the treatments ruint him enjoying the last years of his life. =/ |

okay, thanks for the tip. it really is a shame though, isn't 27 kind of young to get lung cancer?
us smokers are stupid for continuing this habit. and its hard not to hold such a filthy practice against us but the fact is nicotine is a depressant, and causes many people to go into a snowballing effect until they are so depressed quitting is unthinkable. |

I am against smoking personally, but if someone wants to smoke, that's their life, you know. My father-in-law smokes, as well as my grandmother and some of my friends. Its up to them if they want to smoke or not.

Found out yesterday that a good friend of mine has lung cancer. He's around my age. Thing is, I haven't really seen him smoke a whole lot, but apparently he's been smoking since he was around 19. Heh, out of all the people that I know, I'd figured I'd get something f'ed up in my lungs.... |
