We already have nice ideas for 8 brand new track themes (like a graveyard theme, a flooded temple theme, a swamp theme, etc...), but we don't want to start work on that before we have a complete track editor on our hands... I will try to make one if I have to, but my free time is as limited as my programming skills.
Bouche would probably do a much better job, too, but he is MIA...

That's great news Stifu!

I'm curious to see what you and Dirtbag will do with new map textures .
That will add a *LOT* to the game.

Changing the track graphics is something no SMK hack has done so far, because those graphics haven't been found... until recently.
I managed to find them all last summer, and shared my finds with Dirtbag, so he's now able to change track graphics too...

However, DJ Bouche wanted to work a new version of TrackDes that would have been much better than the first one, and that would have let you change the track graphics too... That would have made things much easier than having to do that the usual way, not to mention the old TrackDes doesn't open track graphics from the ROM but from BMP files (in other words, if you change the gfx in the ROM, it will still show the original SMK gfx in TrackDes, unless you edit those BMP file)...

I just wish Bouche would make that new editor, that would make my life much easier...

Oh, that's a nice and simple solution, thanks Dirtbag! As for the edges, there could
be some work but I think that sometimes they are more visible on TrackDesginer
than on the game itself. This is espeacially true of Donut Plains, where these
details seems not to matter when playing the game. Thanks a lot for the
support, maybe I could use some spare time to build more tracks and try to
learn that AI system (a lot to learn, since I don't have experience in ROM hacking
and the last time I've used a HEX editor was to modify text on MS-DOS games).
With the correct AI data you got, how much time did it take you to get a working
AI in one of your tracks?

As with your hack, you haven't modified map graphics. Are they more difficult
to modify than character sprites and text? One nice modification would be to
make ghost valleys and bowsers castles with round curves, just like mario
circuits and donut plains, because I feel these tracks are way more limited than
my beloved Mario Circuits. Also, how is your hack going, do you have more
tracks ready?

My favorite track right now is "Baldy Circuit 4", I think it's the most original
one, it has good curves, just the right ammount of obstacles and it's
FAST ! However, I didn't like the Bowser Circuit, because you have to go
very carefully to make a decent lap, and for me the fun of Mario Kart is
that your finger never get off the acellerator button! .

I'm sorry to say that I don't know how to get around that issue
http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=9300
At least in your case you can export all 5 track into a fresh rom. As you can imagen with mine there are all manner of changes that I have to make in additon to the 'new' copy, AI, Hex edits, GFX etc.

I did like the MC tracks, some of the edges are quite stright but it's a real pain to get proper rounded corners there are so many tiles in MC levels. Don't give up on your hack the more active hacks in the works the more interest there will be

Hi Dirtbag!

I'm impressed with your hack!I wrote my little modification almost a year ago
and since them I haven't checked any other hacks (I have about 6 or 7 of them,
mostly complete track changes that I've downloaded in a french website), so I
must say I am quite impressed with yours, especially the AI issues. As for
the tracks, they are better than many others I've checked, but sometimes they
are too "dirty". What I really like are tracks that "fell" similar to the original game:
fast tracks with nice curves in which minor details you give you an advantage.
I'm proud of my two mario circuits, I think they add something different without
losing that original spirit. Did you enjoy that two tracks from my modification?

By the way, opened it today with TrackDes and whenever I try to edit
the tracks it says "Unable to Save File, either there is no more space in the
ROM or the file is read only". Since the file is not read only, do you know
how I can fix that?

Stifu, I agree that this is a "minimalist" hack, maybe I should better call
it a "modification", as I'm by no way a rom hacker like you guys are. It's nice
to see that are people still working on Super Mario Kart, i'm eagerly waiting
for nice new tracks!

Thanks... Yeah, we are still working very hard on ER. We want it to be "perfect", and to change as much things as possible... That's going to take a while, still. And as you know, TrackDes is far from perfect, so we'll need another track editor to make our tracks exactly the way we want them... That's our main problem.

Back to your hack: the first problem I see is that your tracks don't work with computer drivers... But then if it did, that'd mean you'd have restricted your track designs by making sure the computer could drive through them... I know you're fucked by using TrackDes from the start, but that's still the best option available at the moment (other than hex hacking, as Dirtbag showed in his hack).
Also, your hack has nothing to offer beside 5 tracks changed out of 24... No graphics change or anything. So even though your track designs may be good, your hack is still quite minimalist.

That is a fair point, allot of the hacks to seem to be crazy with the track design... I just hope your not including my hack in that bracket

Hi Stifu!

Let me first say that I can't wait for the "Epic Racers" release, the screenshots
just look great! My hack isn't really nothing special, but there seems to be very
few Mario Kart track hacks, and the ones I've found seem to suffer from poor
track designing. Anyway, I think there are still room for more MK track hacks.
I just can't get tired of Mario Circuits .

I'm getting too lazy to patch nowadays, so I simply drop the ips file in the ROM zip file, and ZSNES will automatically apply the patch everytime it opens the zip.
And that worked fine with that hack...

... Except that hack is yet another tasteless SMK hack.
I don't mean to flame for free, but it's seriously nothing special, something the author probably agrees on, I guess...

FYI I had to expand this ROM to 16Mbit with +header before the patch worked.

Hello!

This is my first post and my first ROM hack! It is a track hack of
Super Mario Kart. It changes all the tracks of the Mushroom Cup.
You can play them on time trial mode or against other opponents
in 2 player mode or at the Internet with ZBattle.

I tried to keep them simple and fun to play. This is a final release and
I don't intend to keep working on it.

(ps: screenshots below)
(ps2: you need a headered rom. My original ROM was named
Super Mario Kart (US).smc or Super Mario Kart.smc [both are the
same for me]; To add a header, use SnesTool).

Hope you enjoy it,
frauber
