| Hiragana are used for: * Japanese words for which there are no kanji, for example particles such as kara から and suffixes such as ~san さん. * Japanese words for which the kanji form is not known to the writer, not expected to be known to the readers, or too formal for the writing purpose. * Verb and adjective inflections, for example in tabemashita 食べました (used like this, hiragana are called okurigana 送り仮名 ). * Giving the pronunciation of kanji for readers who may not know them (used like this, hiragana are called furigana). Katakana are used for: * Onomatopoeia, for example hii ヒー means "sigh". * Names of animal and plant species. * Transcription of words from non-Chinese foreign languages (called gairaigo). For example, "television" is written terebi テレビ. Foreign phrases are usually transliterated with a middle dot separating the words. * Emphasis, like italics in English. In this case it can also mean "words spoken by a foreigner", or "with a foreign accent". * As furigana, giving the pronunciation of a word written in roman characters, or for a foreign word which is written as kanji for the meaning, but intended to be pronounced as the original. I was pretty certain the scar is described as 'thin' in the books... *grabs SS, flips to chapter 2, and skims for a moment* "The only thing Harry liked about his own appearance was a very thin scar on his forehead that was shaped like a bolt of lightning." So, yeah... 'Very thin.' |

| "Coming through!" Kirby and Chuchu barely managed to move out of the way in time to avoid being flattened by a bicycle. The person riding it was of a mildly muscular build, and was wearing a blue T-shirt, faded jeans, and a pair of black converse all-stars. His hair, a brownish blonde or blondish brown (hard to tell which) formed something of a dome over his head. As he turned the bike at a 90-degree angle, skidding to a halt in a very Akira-like manner, the pair of pedestrians could see his very awake and aware hazel eyes. JDavis: Hey, you must be that new kid... Er... "Kirby New Night", was it? I'm JDavis... Most people just call me JD, though. |

| I'm a man of both fandoms, and while I'm happy for Revenge of the Sith and for Enterprise having it's best season ever (I wouldn't be exagerating if I said it was my favorite season of any post-TOS Star Trek), I'm also increadibly sad about Enterprise getting the boot by UPN. Damn you, Les Moonves!  Anyway, back on topic... Revenge of the Sith... it will beyond a doubt be the best of the prequels. I'm also quite happy with the title, and how it's a nice nod to the original title of Return of the Jedi. |
