Well, one of the reasons why I hated FF8 was because the common person picking up the game would normally think summoning giant monsters constantly would be the best battle tactic, only to find that they are screwed beyond all reason late in the game, and that only gamers who really understood the junctioning system would be able to take advantage of it.

Ah, that's what I forgot. A good RPG needs to have a system (stats, battle, job progression, whatever it is) to it that is both accessible to casual gamers, and completely able to be blown open by hardcore players.

It made it harder for me to see, my eyes aren't all that good... I guess I need more practice at picking stuff like this out.

Janus saw Satchel fly into the whirlwind of blades that was Odin's attack... And time stopped, just for an instant...

In Janus' mind, strange images formed. He remembered a man, taller than him, handing him something. He remembered being on the ground, beaten, defeated, and alone...

???: "Janus, before you go, there is one last thing I must give you."

Janus: "A bag? Do you want to mock me before I die?"

The tall man dropped the duffel bag onto his prostrate body...

???: "Janus, this is your life. Do not lose this bag. It holds within it far more than just material objects. Do not let it get destroyed, for the contents of the bag are, especially to you, vitally important. So long as you have this bag, you will never lose your way, ever."

Janus: "How can a bag do that?"

???: "It is not the bag, so much as yourself. This device will help you to unleash your power. Remember, you are the one who will bring the Grey Dawn. You will need to be strong."

Janus: "Grey Dawn?"

???: "You will understand in time. There will come a day when you are able to realize your potential. That will be the day of the Grey Dawn."

Janus: "Why are you telling me all of this? Why not just kill me now, while I can't fight back?"

???: "I keep my friends close, and my enemies even closer, Janus."

Janus: "You could kill me any time you wanted to..."

???: "But I won't. You're far too weak now. Realize your potential, then come back to me when you're ready to rise to a real challenge. Maybe you'll save the world. Maybe you'll play the hero. It's doubtful, but you're young. Now go. Get out of my sight, and don't come back until you're sure I won't be able to kill you."

The memory faded away, and Janus' attention was turned back to the present, as his entire mind was filled with just one thing...

Satchel (telepathy): 'Janus, stop him!'

A surge of adrenaline ran through Janus' body. The first natural reaction he had experienced in five hundred millenia. It was almost euphoric, the sudden influx of energy that ran through his blood. At that moment, the absolute and complete need for Satchel's safety was vital enough to his survival to actually trigger a human reaction in him. So long, almost since he first stepped through the barriers of space and time.

Janus' eyes opened wide. The bag grew ever closer to the whirlwind, and Janus felt a sense of newness within him, a revival of sorts. How fast would he really be able to move? Definitely not fast enough. He only had about a second before Satchel hit Odin's whirlwind at this point. He wouldn't be too worried overall, if he weren't so afraid of Odin's sword having enough magic in it to actually cut through Satchel's cloth. But still...

Janus dropped to the ground, digging his fist into it. The instant his fist hit the ground, archaic symbols burst outward from it, and with a mighty shout Janus sent a ripple of earth in a circular pattern outward from himself, hoping beyond all reason that it would be enough to disrupt Odin's whirlwind!

Ah, that does remind me of a question I had about the Metroid plotline, and Samus' appearance in particular. It says in Fusion her appearance was "drastically altered", yet when I get my ass kicked she still busts out of the suit and looks human.

What was all that stuff about having to have her suit surgically removed? I'd expect her to have some kind of horrible deformity, but no, we've still got the blonde girl with the tight clothes. Was the drastic alteration to her appearance in suit only?

I like the thought of perfect numbers...

Six, for example, can have all three of its factors added together to make itself. 1+2+3=6. The same goes for 28. 1+2+4+7+14=28.

You mean two integer answers.

Actually, there's 32 integer answers.

Don't forget about your negatives becoming positives when they're evenly exponentiated. But they're still the same number, so I guess that's cheating...

You've got a good thing going, Neb. Maybe you should spend more time finding out "who you are". I wish I could be certain about my identity. Maybe it's too early for you to try to establish it, though. There's no set answer you can get.

I feel depressed all the time, I have a lot of chronic stress problems. I can empathize with you, there are things I do that I'm sure are a good idea at first, but slowly become a worse and worse situation as time passes. As for opening up, don't really worry about expressing your emotions. We're all at a stage in our lives where our emotions aren't hard-coded just yet, and if anything they're just jelly that needs to be put into a donut.

They're not whiny problems for the day, man. Death and emotion are two real issues a lot of people face constantly. Just remember that, as you can see here, people will listen to you. If you don't feel you're able to open up to your girlfriend, just open up to us. And if you're really unhappy with your relationship, then just get rid of it. You're only about 1/5th of the way through your life, after all.

Posted on 03-04-05 09:51 PM, in Strange, sinking feeling Link
Lately, I've been getting this strange sinking feeling in my stomach and chest all the time. It makes me wonder what's wrong with my life. I feel as though I need to reassess my current situation, and change things around.

There are problems I'm afraid to confront, and no matter how much encouragement I get toward them (because I know someone's gonna say I should just go for it or something...), I just cant bring myself to talk about my problems, every time I think about them I get that same feeling. It feels like nothing's going to change, and nothing's going to get better. Normally I'm pretty happy and pretty jolly and I can deal with life, but then there are just times when it hits me like a wave: I can't deal with things.

I've tried stress management, I've tried taking deep breaths, but days like this... I feel so pissed off, I want to punch my hand through a window and lick my own blood off my knuckles. I want to suck the pain out through my veins, and cough up the blood that goes into my entrails. I want to scream, I want to hit things, I want to rip things and destroy things, and I don't know what to do about it.

It's like I said, there are things I want to confront, but my own fear keeps me from doing it, and it's just unbreakable. No matter how mad I get or how strong my strength of conviction becomes, the fear just comes back to me that much stronger and I can't counter it. To mutate a phrase from Orwell, I know why, but now I want to understand how. Is there some kind of way I can just cope?

I believe on all game modification devices, they actually place a disclaimer that says "WARNING: Use of this device may damage/corrupt game data."

That's why I never really liked using Gamesharks, Game Genies, Action Replays, or anything like that. They're just too risky, and then when stuff happens like what happened to Dann here, the company says "It's too bad, you screwed yourself".

It figures, they really seem like they're just out to get the gamer.
