For the benefit of her health, Kario...

Did he find an expensive chemical she was using (say, to clean her house or remove iron buildup from her plumbing, etc) in her house that was considered dangerous?

From the stands!

Grey: "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo(gasp)ooooooooooooo!!!!!!"

The camera pans out on Grey before he finishes shouting, and the last echoes of his pained whimpering can still be heard as Kyouji's Ice Spell hits the Firebar...

Kalar sighed...

Kalar: "Fine, I'll do it..."

The tattered cyborg trudged over to Big Jim, who happened to be conveniently located in his original area of residence. Seconds before he spoke to the obnoxious child, a small, bulbous, extremely oblong creature that looked only vaguely like a fairy went whizzing by his head. He snapped his attention away from the kid and his peashooter, and waved his arms at Kirbynite and his crew.

"Hey! Fairy! Go! Now! Do it! The shattered bitch refuses to speak to me!"

Janus' sunglasses glinted in the summer sky. He was clearly pissed off.

Janus: "Odin, I presume..."

His pace was slow. Satchel flew to his side, and the hammer-handle extended from within him. Now was not the time for flashy introductions.

"You broke a rule, Odin. You hurt Grey. Nobody hurts Grey. That's my policy, that's how it goes. Grey stays alive at all costs, unharmed and unaffected."

Finally, the man came into view. Janus took his finger off of the sunglasses' activation button, and placed a besuited arm at his side.

"You know Star, I can't imagine him not telling you about me. Or Origin, especially not Origin. So that'd also mean you know why I'd search you out. I don't really have to go through the whole song and dance, and I'm not gonna. But there's a rule; You can't hurt Grey."

Closer, now. Janus stopped walking, and prepared himself for what promised to be a difficult confrontation.

"I could have gone through today without drawing a weapon, and just asked you to join our cause peacefully. It'd have been a pretty simple endeavor, yes or no. But you hurt Grey, and now I gotta teach you a lesson before we talk. This isn't gonna be a friendly spar."

He tightened, charging a bright white aura around himself. Satchel glowed blue, as did Janus' eyes...

"Just remember, if you're who my sources say you are..."

The white light exploded outward, and then gravitated into Janus, surrounding him with a healthy, hue-less glow!

"I could match every one of your masters..."

He launched himself at Odin, Satchel behind him, ready to deliver a crushing overhead strike!

"....Blow for blow!!!"

Kalar windmilled again, rapidly spinning his spear around himself, as the ice shard flew ever closer, and in an instant it was all over!

Kalar: "Ha, how'd you like... That?"

His metal arm, held out in front of him as the spear was situated behind, wrapped in his real arm, was covered in ice. He brought it closer to himself, and tapped it a few times with the head of his spear. The hand and forearm shattered, as though they were submerged in liquid nitrogen. Kalar looked slightly sheepish, and reached inside his ragged suit jacket, hitting a button on his shoulder. The connector piece for the arm disconnected at the elbow, and from his jacket Kalar somehow managed to produce a second arm, a replacement.

He attached this arm to the connector slot, hit the button on his shoulder again, and watched his arm spring to life. Flexing it a few times, he threw a thumbs-up at Tuxydon.

"Ha, always carry a spare! Unfortunately, I don't really have another... So, what now?"

The explosion rocks Janus backward, sending him flying and skidding across the ground. When he finally stops moving, a trench can be seen in the path of his skids...

Janus: "Yep, that's the Dracoon in you speaking."

He picked himself up, stumbling a bit on his feet... Unacceptable immortality came in handy every once in a while.

"But predictable? Man, that's an insult."

Suddenly, with underestimatable speed augmented still further by Green's Shoes, Janus appeared behind Odin, grabbing him and tossing him roughly into the air, his strength augmented by Red's power-suit!

"So let's see..."

He leaps high into the air!

"....You've hurt Grey..."

As he passes Odin in the air, he catches the upward-traveling warrior at the apex of his jump!

".....And insulted me!"

He hurls Odin back toward the ground, whipping a disc out of Satchel as Odin flies! Quick-scanning it, he finishes his attack by darting toward the ground as the disc breaks open, and attempts to smash Odin with his downward force!

"Earthquake Punch!!!"

Janus jumps out of his attack, frontflipping several times and landing gracefully on his feet. He is not carrying Satchel. As the dust clears, one must wonder what happened to Odin...

Janus: "Gaaaah!"

He panicked, moving as fast as he could to Grey's position, faster now without Satchel in his hands to burden him. Performing a run-by grab of the prostrated detective and wrapping him in his (fireproof, fortunately) coat, Janus jumped with Grey still in his arms through the sea of Odin clones, a firey aura surrounding him and making him into a burning projectile!

"Red's Fire!!!"

He landed beyond the wave of clones as the earth-shattering explosion from Odin's attack sent chunks of earth outwards, showering Grey and Janus in dirt. Janus placed his still unconscious friend on the ground, praying he'd stay safe. He then turned to Odin, flames encircling his body and growing hotter by the second.

"I thought I told you..."

Satchel, just for reference, is nowhere to be found.

"....STAY AWAY FROM GREY!"

Emotional outrage, indeed. Janus rushes toward Odin, does a quick hop, and slams his fist into the ground in front of him, discharging his aura into a rush of fire that appears beneath Odin's feet!

Posted on 02-25-05 08:00 PM, in What Are the needs of what you believe the best RPG's are made of? Link
I've always loved RPGs that have some kind of strong individuality, or an interactive battle system. I got a kick out of Legend of Dragoon for a while because you actually participated in battle. Same with M&LS and Paper Mario. I loved Earthbound (and still think it's the greatest RPG ever made) because it was just so way far out there that no other RPG could match it in quirkiness. I mean, come on. It's got its own BLUES BAND, and one of the strongest bosses is a tiny little toy robot thingie that you don't even get to kill.

As far as story goes, it all really boils down to "save X from Y and win the game" anyway, so I can't say main plot is as exciting as character development. I enjoyed Suikoden III not because of the engaging story, it was really good, but I paid more attention to the character development (especially in Geddoe's crew).

Graphics are not a must; the only situation where I think they'd be a boon would be if you happen to have long, drawn out summoning sequences that you really use constantly (E.G. FFVIII). If you're gonna see those summons all the time, you might as well think they're pretty to look at.

I think psychotic villains that start out small and grow gigantic, like Kefka or Pokey, are the best of the lot. Realistic villains are cool too, like Rufus or Delita, but they're only really realistic if they're exactly on the level with your heroes, which is why I gave Delita the nod in this one. He's a bad guy for sure, though he doesn't show it til the very end of Final Fantasy Tactics, but at the same time, when it comes right down to brass tacks he's not really that strong.

Love stories are good; I just hate the "Helpless heroine" angle, and thereby hate Aeris, whom many people I've met use as the example of a perfect romantic subplot character (especially in conjunction with Guru's claim that an RPG needs a tragedy to happen to the heroes). There is no reason whatsoever why a girl should be portrayed as weak or helpless in a video game, and that statement is justified, ironically, by the existence of Aeris' opposite, Tifa. Tifa is what I would call a good character for a romantic subplot. She's physically and emotionally strong, one of the better characters in FFVII to have in battle and capable of handling stressful situations with ease (see also: execution chamber, followed by bitch slap fight with Ruby). I know for a fact if I were an RPG hero, I wouldn't want my girlfriend getting hurt by the horrific forces of evil, so I'd make sure she was able to defend herself before I dated her.

Unorthodoxy, again, helps out a lot. Sometimes, having a hero that's on the opposite side of the law (like Laharl or Barrett) can be just as heroic as having one that obeys every law presented in front of him with no questions (Steiner, Chris from Suikoden III). Even the bad guy turned good angle works well, especially when you consider what happened to Bowser in SMRPG, or Beatrice in FFIX. The trick is to make it implicit, you can't just have a bad guy go "Oh, I made a mistake so I'll join you now", you have to have them come to some kind of realization over time.

So, characters, spells, plot, romance, unorthodoxy, and what am I missing... *reads TheMageous' post* Ah, humor! You can't have an RPG that doesn't make you laugh somehow. Even FFVIII had moments I thought were funny, whether they were intentional or not, and I hated FFVIII. Just goes to show that a little humor can go a long way.

Barring all of this, an RPG can still be good if there's some kind of deepness to it. Kingdom Hearts has some of the most uninspired (read: DISNEY) characters in it that I've ever seen, yet I still loved it because of the little things I noticed, like the Ansem Reports or the dozens of little side quests you can do. Not only that, even though the characters were transparent and derivative, the relationships between them were made extremely clear, and helped enrich the game to a point where I can't wait to see what happens next, even if I somehow already know. Plus, there's always room for a plot twist.

OK, that's about it from me, I'm sure you're all bored to tears with what I've said by now. If I have anything else I wanted to add, I'm sure I'll post it anyway. Good luck keeping your eyes dry then.

Kalar's steel leg fires upward, kicking the knife high into the sky, only to have it land on the ground, quivering, several seconds later...

Kalar: "Oh, it's not that freaky... Look, I can do it with my leg, too!"

And with that, he slams a fist into his thigh, as the knee connector for his artificial leg pops loose. He then does something extremely odd, and replaces his leg with his arm, and his arm with his leg!

"Now THIS is freaky... I like to do it once in a while to creep people out!"

Judging by the look on Tuxydon's face, Kalar suddenly realizes he may have gone a bit too far, and replaces his limbs to their proper positions...

Janus: "Satchel's Draw!!!"

It was time to see what ability Pokemon Collosseum gave him...

More flames erupted around Janus, as he suddenly went into a diving roll, meeting Odin's slash low and leaving a trail of flames behind him as he somersaulted speedily along the ground and underneath the sword!

Janus felt reminisciently like a hedgehog for a few seconds as he executed Flame Wheel on Odin. Not the best move, but certainly enough to keep Odin distracted for a few seconds... Hopefully.

Kalar: "HaHA!"

The insane fellow catches Tuxydon's wrist in his metal hand, but is knocked flat by the elbow jab to the head! He windmills upward, and instantly the scythe is off his back, as Kalar does a quick backflip, slashing upward and leaving an afterimage of the scythe's near-transparent blade!

IC:
Janus: "Indeed I do!"

But his confidence is stilled for a moment... He remembered his battle with Elder Schwa for the devastating effect of Psi Vortex, but was afraid to fight without his sight this time. Surely, Odin had ways of moving without being heard. Instead...

"But there's more to fighting than just seeing your foe!"

Suddenly, the flames remaining around Janus from Flame Wheel grew hotter, and he rose a few inches into the air. Bringing himself to a crucifix-like position, he then spread his legs to shoulder length, and turned himself to where Odin's voice came from!

"Tactical Modification!!!"

Flame Wheel wasn't all that powerful a Pokemon move, but this certainly would be...

"Fire Blast!!!"

The body-shaped fire attack was shot from Janus' body, straight at Odin! If Odin hadn't moved since he last spoke, chances are it's coming right at him...

A deadly weapon used to help people's health?

Alright, I'll bite. Was it actually a deadly weapon used for people's health? And by health I mean in the same way as medicine would be used, as in to take away some kind of disease, injury, etc.
