OOC: Alright, I've never done a random open battle before, but I'm pretty bored. If you've been following my adventures in the SF, you should know who this guy is. If not, that's too bad for you. Give it your best! The information in this battle will be kinda essential for a plotline I plan on starting in the future, but it doesn't necessarily have to include whomever chooses to challenge me.

Mexico. The middle of an ancient Aztec ruin. It is here that he stands, guarding a certain someone from making a visit.

A piece of it is here. He is naught but a visitor to this timeline, unwanted, unwilling, but necessary nonetheless.

Several pieces of interesting information have surfaced, one of them being primarily about the Master Emerald. It is this information that brings the man to this place.

Of pieces, naturally, the Master Emerald is especially important. One of them is here. Long ago, it was used to save the world on multiple occasions. Great heroes used it and the power of Chaos to bring order and peace to a world ravaged by an insane villain. They have long since faded into obscurity. But the man knows that the power of Chaos is resurfacing. He knows it because it has corrupted his world, and because it was what threw him into this one. He knows it because the Chaos is manifesting itself.

Janus... He has already begun to search for that power, thinking it will somehow help him. What a fool he is. Chaos can only lead to destruction... It is for that reason that this man waits for him. This man, known only to the world as "Evan"...

So, he waits. He watches, he makes sure that Janus will never get his hands on that piece. But today, his duty is disturbed by a rather unwanted visitor. Who could it be?

Garro: "Aaaaaaaaaaugh!!!!"

Garro could feel his body being ripped at from both sides... An attack of this magnitude at so early in the battle? It was only fair, of course. Call Lightning was a very advanced spell, it was clear this battle was not one where the stops would be pulled out at the end. And his own holy blasts had destroyed all chance of a buildup that Garro was hoping to achieve. It was time to bring out the big guns.

Or rather, it would have been time to bring out the big guns if Garro had counted on the lightning, which chose then to sear through his clothing, the only thing holding his body together from being reduced to a pair of bloody halves imprisoned in a dimensional rift. He could feel his very arms being torn from their sockets, all the more intense because of Garro's frail build. When it was over, he collapsed to the dirt, panting on his hands and knees, knowing he was lucky to be alive.

A bead of sweat dripped down his face as a drop of blood escaped Garro's mouth... Bleeding. He had bitten his tongue in the shock. Only the tip of it, it looked like it would be alright, but the taste of blood in his mouth shocked him into realizing that he was getting a royal asskicking. He got up, wiping the blood from his lips and swallowing the rest. But, then he came up with something...

The blood of a priest.... He took it from his lip, and chuckled a little to himself as he let it drip to the ground...

Garro: "The blood of a priest... It means nothing more than the divine protection of one more person has failed..."

The blood boiled on the ground as it sank like acid deep into the astroturf... It was not holy.

"Failed... Because I do not believe in the sense that you think I do. God... What ruckus. The nature of my power lies not in my ability to call down holy might..."

He raised his hand, bible clenched... It burst into flames as he blinked a terrible, reddening eye. The pages flared outward, and encircled him in a quickly darkening sphere of blazes. Black fire, wrought only from burning an item blessed by a deity. Sacreliege, now?

"....But in the use of the unknown to take advantage of those who do not understand."

Garro understood. Metal, he knew, did not. Metal considered Garro a priest. A representative of a higher power, which would imply that Metal believed a higher power existed. Garro was no priest. Priests have faith.

In fact, Garro's true power was driven by others... Others who had faith. Faith in their friends, in their families, in whatever higher powers existed... He chose freely from his denominations. Anyone who believed in anything hard enough could aid him. It was simply a matter of accessing the power. Holy water could burn undead flesh if enough people needed it to, but when nobody cared if that status had been conferred upon it, it could be drank with impunity, like cheap wine.

Garro had seen that so many people had faith in the world that at any given point he could simply assume someone believed that what he was doing could happen. That miracles were possible, that great disasters were believable.

His firey strike was delayed... Not many people believed that meteors would come crashing down from the heavens, but some do, and that was enough for him. That the speed of Hermes himself could be conferred upon an individual was believed by many who had seen the fastest men and women in the world run. That miracles could happen, that humans could be healed from crippling wounds by a representative of some higher power was a given for so many people, Garro could snap his fingers and watch an entire town have the black plague lifted.

Garro had no faith of his own, so he borrowed it from others...

With that book burned, the black fire would consume him, he knew. But there were others who believed, as well. Others who believed in much darker secrets than those of the white heavens, of gods and goddesses. Those who believed in more demonic means, who believed that slavery and servitude was all that existed in those theologies. It was that belief that Garro chose to access...

The black flames condensed around his right hand, forming a burning blade that Garro held tightly in his hands.

He gripped it by the hilt, and with a mighty heave, turned it about and promptly drove it into himself.

I'd cough up something idealistic about diversity and moral standing and how everyone deserves a right to live, and how killing makes you no better than the murderers and all of that cheesy anti-death penalty stuff, but really, the case sells itself.

It's kinda like the bully you meet in elementary school. He's got the guts to hit you, but you don't hit him back. Why don't you hit him back? Everyone's told you that violence doesn't solve everything, but it seems to be solving things well enough for him.

Slay, this is NOT Brave New World. People aren't simply going to cast other people out of society or reform them for being unorthodox, there aren't going to be islands in Iceland and the Falkland islands where you can go meet other errants. Eventually in a society like that, a system of rule will take place where everything does belong to everyone else. Your idea of taking in moderation and everyone producing everything has one huge weakness: You're thinking of moderation on your own terms. Some people express a physical need alongside a greed-based need subconsciously. They'd need to be conditioned to not, and that'd be exercising more control over the individual than most governments do currently.

And what happens when there IS unorthodoxy? When two people decide they both want something at once? The person who gets it first will obviously be placed above another person, at least in the mind of the individual. That's instinct. Or if someone wants privacy, but is denied it on the grounds that nobody else wants privacy, therefore privacy can't be necessary and is thus not permissible?

There's going to eventually be a problem of supply, demand, and laziness. It's hard-coded into people, and you're right to think that it won't happen in this lifetime. We're too accustomed to luxury. It's not dystopian, it's ultra-utopian, based around the idea that somehow everyone will be happy and peaceful and courteous to each other when in fact we're dumb, panicky, angry animals that don't want to defy our basest instincts.

Was that necessary, Thayer?

Zero, pedophilia, wrong as you or I may think it is, has several different definitions.

There are the people who are around your or my age who happen to be attracted to people who are significantly (e.g. five or six years) younger than them. This attraction could be physical, it could be emotional, it could be both. That doesn't make the older an instant rapist. It means there's an age gap. If respected, no matter what happens later on in life if it really was meant to be a relationship then the fact that they're still a significant age distance apart still applies, but for some reason it just means less. That's kinda deflating.

Then there ARE the rapists, the weirdos that need to satisfy their sexual needs by tricking kids into going into vans and pulling their pants down. That's wrong, but that's wrong because it's rape in the same sense that grabbing someone in an alley and forcing them into it is rape. It should be applied to the same laws that taking advantage of someone sexually is.

Then there are the people who are both underage; did you know that knuck is only 15? How does him liking girls that are 12 years old end up being wrong? Especially since he lives in Brazil. Culture shock! Kids "date". It's actually kinda cute to see. Not SEX, mind you, but I'll cover that one later, because as it stands right now that can only be defended with the argument that "oh it's gonna happen anyway", which I agree with you on in that it's an argument that doesn't have rational thought to it since other laws will be broken alongside it.

The human body matures very quickly in relation to how quickly we are allowed to take advantage of this fact by law. They say that even though you're physically ready to have sex, you're not ready emotionally. Whose fault is that? Society's!

Earlier I said that I believed that people weren't mature enough to have sex until they were about 16 and even then they were just making a mistake. I think I should revise that statement. I think we should be taught about sex earlier. Like, right when our bodies start changing. We're not mature enough because we don't understand ourselves enough. If we are educated, if we learn, if we allow instinct and knowledge to work together, then that is what leads to emotional maturity. We're more comfortable with our bodies, we're able to bear the need to have sex more responsibly, and we're able to take advantage of the fact that we're able to do so with impunity.

Face it, Zero. We're being babied, and as a result we're raising a society where youth relationships are seen as "robbing the cradle", to use a fitting phrase. I still say let the fuckers have what they want, but now I think I'm going to mention that we're perfectly capable of becoming mature before we're allowed to exercise our responsibility.

Metal punched Garro in the face, and Garro fell backwards, sprawled on the ground. The black flames still surrounded him, and now it looked as though they were protruding from his chest. A record scratch sound filled the air as the battle music, which had previously been incredibly creepy and terrifying, came to a sudden, completely out-of-left-field stop.
-------------------------------------------
And now, an interlude...

Kalar: "Uh, Grey? He's not getting up. Should we be worried?"

Grey and Kalar peered out at the Arena from the wings... So far the fighting hadn't really been very impressive. There had been a few cool moves here and there, but it looked like the story was getting in the way again.

Grey: "Nah, let him. I think I know what he's up to..."

Kalar: "Oh?"

Grey: "Yeah, think about this..."

Whatever Metal was doing, Garro had yet to get up still. Grey took this as an opportunity to engage in some helpful soliloquy...

"Think about this: Every match Metal's been in, his performance has been based entirely on his foe. It goes along with his theory that he believes he can do anything. He's only been beaten if he's been shown to be vastly outclassed by someone who can do just that little bit more than him. He matches his foe, if anything. The power that Garro had been expressing had been matched and in several cases even trumped by Metal's abilities. Metal clearly knows a lot more about what he's doing than he lets on. He's a good fighter, and I think Garro knows that power alone isn't going to beat him, which is ironic..."

Kalar: "Ironic because of that...?"

Grey: "Correct."

Kalar: "I see...."
---------------------------------------------

Garro twitched a bit on the ground, and came to a sitting position with the flaming sword still in his chest. It dissipated into nothingness as he realized that his spell pretty much fell flat in front of him. He rubbed his jaw where Metal had punched him and got to his feet.

Garro: "Well, damn. I never said I was a perfect being, that's very rude of you. I don't like it when people put words in my mouth."

He walked over to his cast-off coat, grunted a bit as he hefted it, and put it back on. His movement was reduced to normal, and he walked over to Metal, shaking his fist in the air.

"And you know what?"

He turned his fist palm-inward, and stuck his middle finger in the air.

"That's for punching me. Especially after I apparently agreed with you."

Garro: "I see, I see! That makes perfect sense!"

Garro had replaced his small black bible with a notebook and was taking notes incessantly: He had attended many college lectures in the past on the subject of Random Bullshit, particularly the courses RNDBS108, 369, and 404: Introduction to Idiotic Concepts, Integral Development of Entropic Knowledge, and Advanced Inability to Figure Things Out. The equation, he realized, was sheer genius: Metal was on the verge of almost discovering the complete unified theory of BSing One's Way Out Of An Ass-Kicking!

The keyword there was, of course, almost. Garro took a good, long look at the equation...

The Matrix Participle of Discovering the Underlying Principle of Nearly Every God Damned Movie Ever Made was being used to calculate the ratings of the latest David Lynch movie: The Cinematography Postulate, when plugged into the Cheesy Special Effects
en vitro Theorum, was almost proof enough to show that Geico COULD INDEED save you 15% or more on car insurance: That Gecko's payroll, however, had to be subtracted from the value, which was keeping Garro from figuring out just how many licks it would take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.

Finally, he just thought "Fuck it" and, tossing his notebook aside, pulled out his pistols and leapt backward, using the mathematical power of the MPDUPNEGDMEM to power his Wachowskinated special effects and fire a rapid series of holy blasts at Metal, threatening to blow him and his chalkboard to pieces!

Evan raised his head...

Evan: "Hm? Who're you..."

He snapped to attention, wondering. Could this be it? Is this the day? Does he have to wait any longer until he needs to defend this place?

"Come to take the shards, have you? Just a girl, but I bet you're with him!"

His mind shouted of fear, paranoia, and echoes of a destroyed, desolate world where Chaos reigned supreme. He started, and a rush of energy surrounded him, mixing Chaos, Fire, Ice, Lightning, energies from across the voids and planes circulated through his body, both ancient and new... He was a force that did not agree with this world. Even one such as Shen would have trouble contemplating his spirit in its true form.

"Speak! I won't be so easily disturbed!"

Janus: "Hm, I'd feel much more comfortable riding on top of a being made of pure plasma than inside of a being that can turn himself into a car... Rijju, was it? Janus."

He looks the beast over, it seems deadly enough... If this was what Yiusi could do without even trying, he was actually kinda scared at this point. Not the ideal circumstances for an evening out with a lady-friend, you see. But, for the time being, Janus knew they'd have to cope. Some things, like defending the honor of an established higher power, were just slightly more important.

"I'd shake your hand, but... Well, it doesn't look like that'd be too safe. Now, how do I ride?"

Evan: "So, you're with Janus, are you? One of his cronies, like the mechanical monster Dracoon or that fucker Kalar or that bitch Nijote? Huh? Come on! I'll tear you to shreds if you are, I swear it! There's no way I'm gonna let you guys rip this world apart!"

He stepped toward her, his muscles bulging and his body raising to its full height. He was a tank of a man, clad entirely in thick leather and an enshrouding cape... Clearly a man who hated making his presence obvious, but impassioned by some unknown drive, a need to protect, to secure...

But what?

Evan: "I don't think you understand..."

Her soul reached out to him, but Evan's was one of need and necessity: It was of another time, another story. He didn't want to hurt her. He knew he didn't, he didn't want anyone to suffer, but he could not just let her pass. Nobody, nobody was allowed to have this one. It would someday be the last piece of the puzzle. He dared not touch it, he dared not move it or use its power, for fear of the Chaos corrupting him, twisting his soul in ways it had yet to experience. Nobody could. He'd sit and guard it, like the heroes of the past did so long ago...

"Even if you're not with them, I can't let you have it. You can't help anyone with this. It will only bring destruction and pain to the world. Go now, before I force you to leave."

He wasn't kidding...
