You know, this reminds me of back in the days when people thought D&D would make you go out and kill people. I'll assume that you've all read Jack Chick's "Dark Dungeons," and refer you to it if you haven't. People are too gullible these days, they'll eat up anything that gets fed to them. There have been thousands of violent games that nobody's even raised an eyebrow at, yet when one of them goes mainstream, everybody hates it because apparently it causes kids to kill. So here's my question:

What about Conker's Bad Fur Day? Hundreds of parents bought that, thinking it'd be a child's game, only to find it a rauchy sex farce. But the media didn't talk about that. Or all of the Half Life mods? I've seen maybe one or two stories referring to it. Mafia? That's got tons of criminal elements in it, never seen it mentioned. Thief? Nope, passed over. Come to think of it, until GTAIII came out, video games were deemed a fun and interesting way to pass time.

Suddenly we get a game that emulates you doing something bad but exciting, and thousands of parents and authorities jump on it because they claim that it made children start resorting to violence. The GTA games were an experiment that Rockstar wanted to try, and it worked, they became popular and people started talking about the cool stuff they did with cars in it.I say, if you're crazy enough to kill someone you shouldn't be playing video games. But that's just me, and another opinion that's "just me" is that anyone who claims video games lead to violence is full of crap.

And another thing, what about GTA I and II? They had everything the other GTA games had, but suddenly it gets depicted in 3D and people can't handle it? What the hell...

I get that feeling every time I pop in Kirby's Superstar. I love old school video games, they represent a time when games weren't total poodles of developmental fury, and people actually wanted to play through games for the gameplay, and not just to see the neato CG ending. It's why I like Megaman Legends more than I do Kingdom Hearts, and why I'll never stop playing KSS no matter how many new Devil May Cry games come out.

Come to think of it, the only games that I can think of that really come close to the challenge that older games gave is Viewtiful Joe and Ratchet and Clank 2 (second time through, of course). They're maddening and there's so much to watch out for, just like back in my glory days on the SNES.

Also, Super Mario RPG is badass.

Much more than weekly, people don't plead insanity anymore, they plead GTA. Crazy part is, there have been cases where kids have walked for accidental murders because they claimed they were imitating GTA. That's what gets them out of trouble, saying that video games influenced them, and that's what gets us all IN trouble, because the ESRB only serves to tighten its grip after that.

Despite the implications of the phrase "Fight Fire with Fire", it is NOT able to put out fires.

Interesting story about that: A few days ago, a pizza place in my town burns down. Apparently, the owner just happened to be out of state that day, and was about to give his business to his cook, who wanted to remodel the place. How convenient that it had accidentally burnt down (due to also accidentally leaving wood near a flaming stove), as now he gets the insurance money and can rebuild the place as he sees fit! Plus, there's bound to be some money left over from the rebuild and reequipping, so he even gets some money to compensate for his loss!

Janus was enjoying his walk through the woods around town. It wasn't very often he enjoyed a moment of peace, and whenver he was, it was certainly a good vacation spot for him, years away from the Radiant Order and those damned agents. Everyone does a bit of random wandering in their own time, Janus did his wandering in other people's.

Naturally, not knowing where, or when, one is can be a bit of a drag, and it definitely throws off one's sense of direction, so that did pose a slight problem when he decided to end his vacation and go home... Still, who said his vacation had to end? He could get money easily enough, and keep a quiet life here, wherever "here" happened to be. He'd have to start running again if "they" managed to catch up to him, but then again, "they" weren't even born yet. Or rather, he hoped they weren't...

But hey, the air was sweet, the breeze was cool, the sun was shining. Nothing could go wrong. Which was exactly why he was a bit on edge. Something always seemed to happen to him when nothing at all was happening around him.

Janus (sighing): "Maybe I'm just paranoid. But still, it seems as though every time I want a little peace and quiet, something has to come up and ruin my day..."

Janus sits on the ground, leaning against a tree, hoping to take a quick nap. As if on cue, he is suddenly greeted by a bright flash of light, and wonders what's up. Walking in the direction of the light, his attention is suddenly captured by an old man limping into a nearby building. Several minutes later, a trio of people run out of the building, and Janus begins to get worried. He runs into the building, only to see the same old man lying on the floor, barely breathing.

Janus grimaces. "Man, I hate having my vacations get interrupted..." He kneels down. "Hey, old man, what's going on here?"

The old man's eyes open, and he speaks, barely able to rasp out a whisper...

Priest: "The... Chapel... I couldn't..."

Janus: "Couldn't...?"

Preist: "............."

Janus: "Damn, he's not breathing..." Janus opens his bag, searching frantically through a sea of miscellaneous objects, relics from his homeland. "Healing magic, healing magic, come on! I don't exactly have much time!"

Finally finding a strange device with the letters "C.T." inscribed into it, Janus grits his teeth, and begins looking at it intensely, his eyes glowing blue. several seconds later, his eyes stop flashing, and a burst of gold light emits from his chest.

"Heal! Didn't want to waste this, but I don't exactly have much choice here... Just hope it works."

The preist suddenly opens his eyes, gasps, and leaps to his feet in an instant. He appears harried and filled with fear.

Preist: "Did you save my life? Thank you! Thank you so much! But I cannot stay here, I must go back to the chapel to make sure those children are safe!"

Janus: "Hold it, old man! What chapel? Hey, come back here and tell me what's going on! I saved your life, for crying out loud!"

As the Preist rushes off to the chapel, Janus can do nothing but follow.

Tried it, I haven't even heard of it! What is it? And yeah, all that bad press does wonders for sales. Vice City pretty much rode into the millions on its moniker of sex, violence and crude humor. People bought it BECAUSE it was like that. It's a kind of crazed irony, you know? People are willing to buy something with bad stuff in it just because there's bad stuff in it that they wouldn't be able to do in real life.

That reminds me about Earthbound. Year 199X... and a libary say that you should return a book before year 2000.

Oh, please. Earthbound's got so much more you could point out as strange, it's what makes it one of my favorite games.

Let's see if I can hit them all: Psychic powers, talking appliances, phone calls that cost a dollar, alternate reality hallucinations, dinosaurs, swamps that poison you, a giant walking desert idol, moving heiroglyphs, the loch ness monster, the fact that it takes Jeff the same amount of time to fix a spray can as it does to fix a random machine or gadget, but he can fix a UFO even faster. The UFO itself, randomly hearing music, a bee from the future, gangbusting, the starmen, aliens, the greatest enemy you'll ever face ending up being your next door neighbor, the mani-mani statue, a cult devoted to the color blue, a baseball bat or frying pan doing more damage than a laser, the awesome healing powers of (insert food here), the whole Poo character, the cast of enemies, the Runaway Five ditching you constantly, the diamond mines, time travel, turning into robots, the guy who randomly takes your picture, fatal hospital wounds costing 110 dollars per revival, magic butterflies, magic cakes, magic tarts, magic pudding, magic truffles, the piggy nose, multi bottle rockets...

And finally, the greatest enigma of Earthbound: Mr. Saturn.

Indeed Earthbound kicks ass. IF ONLY, if only Nintendo hadn't axed the next game in the series. The game was an underground classic, it just isn't right that Nintendo can't continue the madness for the real fans. Plus, HAL Labs is still turning out games, I don't see why they can't reform Halken and make it.

You signed that old petition a few years back, right? I did. The world needs another Mother! If it did come out, I have a feeling this thread would have plenty to talk about for years to come.

I knew about the GBA game, but I was referring more to the cancelled N64 sequel when I said axed. I also thought the GBA game was just gonna be a remake of Mother or Earthbound? It'd be cool if it really were an all new game...

Nevermind being a starter, I wouldn't recommend Outlaw Star period. Unless you get the untranslated versions, those are pretty neat. But I just think some of the voices in OS are so irritating!

Don't feel bad, I forgot about it too.

I actually liked Harmony of Dissonance, it reminded me a lot of Symphony of the Night. So if you've played that, Harmony of Dissonance is pretty close to it. But yeah, Aria of Sorrow, while it doesn't have the Relic System like SOTN did, has plenty of neat attacks and a variety of equipment and stuff. And there's also that whole "really fun game to play" thing.

Argh, you just asked the most hateful question a hating hater like me could ever hope to hate.

The list of celebrities that I dislike is so long, were I to write it down it'd stretch from one side of my bedroom to the other. Unfortunately I can't think of any of them now, due to my hatred for them being quite evenly dispersed.

Posted on 07-31-04 03:37 AM, in Wisdom Vs. Reason: Janus Calls Schwa to Spar Under the Stars. Link
OOC: That's fine, I was out all day myself.

Rocketing toward the ground, Janus tries moving left and right to dodge the attack. Seeing it zigzag along with him, he eventually gives up and holds his hammer out in front of him in an attempt to block the attack. The blast hits him full on, knocking him backwards, and causing him to drop his hammer. He appears relatively unharmed, but not entirely so.

Janus: "Schwa, when you cannot die, how can you fear death? You're quite lucky I'm more spirit than flesh regardless of my current form, or else I might have been able to sidestep that with impunity. Nevertheless, that DID sting. You see, I am neither good nor bad, I fight for my own ideals, and in my mind my ideals are the most noble that they can be. That is my defense against your attacks, the belief that everything I do is right for what I want to accomplish. It's certainly not absolute, you may disagree with me highly, but it is enough to keep me going."

Still on the ground, Janus concentrates for a moment, and then springs up again, even higher this time! He floats in the air above Schwa, yet it does not seem to be of his own power, more that he is hanging off of his hammer...

"As long as I am near my bag, I can do things like this. From this height, any normal person would die of a fall. I, however, will not. Observe!"

With all of his strength, Janus flings his hammer toward the ground, and cries, "Earthquake!!!" As he falls, the hammer falls faster, striking the ground and sending a giant cloud of dust upward. Falling fast, Janus enters the dust, and catches his hammer as it bounces off the ground, landing hard, yet again relatively unharmed, on his feet in the process. The dust cloud would allow him to hide from anyone with normal eyes, but Schwa's blindfold obviously does not allow him to rely on his eyesight.

"I know you can still see me Schwa, don't consider this a diversionary tactic in the least. But the same defense MIGHT not work against what I'm about to do, just as a warning. I don't want you to get hurt, after all..."
