I personally believe that no one can control what they are attracted to anymore than they can control what tastes or smells good to them, but I don't think it's quite the same as saying, "I always knew I was gay," simply because children have no concept of sexuality, so they don't know whether they're gay or straight or metrosexual until we tell them that such things exist and that they must choose one of the labels to apply to themselves. That's one of the reasons I love kids so much; they have no concept of labels and groups the way we do. They just see people for people. They don't see gay or straight, black or white, Christian or Jew; they just see people, and that's a lesson that many of us adults could stand to re-learn.

For once I gotta agree with Slay here: Most modern behavioral practices show that children really don't develop a sense of gender until at LEAST five or six years old... Sex-role stereotying doesn't come into play until about that age, maybe a little later, around seven years old or so (when the distinctions between girls and boys really start to show in play style, interests, and even appearance in small part).

But then, the guy was also acting in fear of the boy BECOMING gay. This in no way justifies his gay panic defense, just the fact that the child didn't already have to be gay for him to beat it to death, which makes the fact that he beat the kid to death even worse. He didn't know, he just wanted to make sure, in a way that most states (apparently not Florida) consider HORRIFYINGLY ILLEGAL.

Also, I'm pretty sure if a man is willing to beat his child chances are he's willing to beat his wife too, which would explain her lack of ability to help her child. That's just speculation, though.

Hrm.... Ending to Final Fantasy Tactics was pretty sweet. Earthbound too.

But the best ending has to be in Chrono Trigger:

Spoiler:
1: The programmer's ending? Hell yeah, meeting all the programmers and stuff, learning about the 9999 hit combo, and just having the developers make fun of you is great. Plus, taking on Lavos as Crono alone is just awesome.
2: The Frog ending: When everyone in your world turns into a frog, what do you do? That's what I thought.
3: The Repetite Ending: Same thing. Same. Thing.
4: Frog Vs. Magus: Godly. You don't even see the fight but you know it's good. The best part is that technically, you don't even know who wins the battle (my wager's on Frog: as the credits roll the last thing you hear is the Masamune slashing).
5: Lavos Ending: Yeah, the world can end. Boo Hoo, try again. Loser.
6: Magus Vs. Lavos: Hey, we all knew it was possible. He doesn't lose his powers, and hopefully he kicks some REAL arse.
7: The Nu ending: No clue.
8: The Regular Ending: I guess that's pretty cool, with the whole rise above the clouds thing...
9: The Black Omen ending: The cool part about this is that your past and future is altered by whether or not you killed Magus. I like seeing Frog turn back into a human, and it's worth it to see Crono not be in the party and to check out what happens.
Then there's the variations on the real ending: Whether or not Crono's alive, whether or not everyone tumbles out of the telepod, whether or not Lucca comments that human Frog actually is kinda cute, whether or not the telepod is used to save Crono, whether or not Marle comes with them.... I'm not entirely sure which ending is the real one, myself... But there's definitely a lot of variations.

Come to think of it, anyone actually KNOW the real ending to this game?

Kalar: "Drive Fusion, eh? You're still not gonna be fast enough...!"

....but his manifesto was cut short by Sion blazing through him, slicing his body in twain and causing him to divide into a demonic wave of soul energy once again. He reformed himself behind Sion, falling to his knees and gasping for breath. Sweat beaded on his brow as his hair fell forward. How...?

"What... What kind of power..."

His eyes glowed a deep crimson hue, and he stared directly at Sion. The drive fusion had more than doubled his speed. Dammit, Janus was the video game nerd around here, not Kalar! What had Grey said...?

'....his combination of elements from Kingdom Hearts...'

And now Kalar had been given strange shadow powers...

He suspected something, but didn't want to act upon it just yet. There was still more knowledge to be gained, and those shadow dissolutions were becoming less and less instinctive. Time was not on Kalar's side. Unfortunately, it now seemed as though speed wasn't, either.

Suddenly, an idea hit Kalar. An awful idea. A terrible, wonderful, awful idea... He whirled around at Sion, his eyes glowing a satanic red color, and an evil grin on his face.

"Hehehehehahaha! What kind of power, indeed? Give me all you've got!"

Posted on 07-23-05 10:48 PM, in the War on Terrorism - you can't kill an Idea, only outlast it Link
But the simple definition of anything as a "terrorist" act adds a label to it that instantly makes it into something that we think we can stomp down with money and violence. It's more of the rules of semantics: Calling something a terrorist act bestows upon it both a power and a weakness that we fall victim to and are conversely unable to exploit: We create the enemy, and we cannot defeat them because we're so caught up in being wonderful and amazing that we don't realize that our wonder and amazement just generates more anger.

The Idea is a myth: in a way, we are The Idea, or at least a part of it. We create The Idea through our actions, or else we foster The Idea's growth just by refusing to change, not even by being crueler or more wonderful and amazing than we already are.

But dammit, The Idea can be combated, not by outlasting it or stomping it down, but by CHANGING BACK TO WHEN THE IDEA DIDN'T EXIST. The periods in history where The Idea was gone, and there was no "Man" to stick it to, or "Power" to fight were our most enlightening and intellectually prosperous. War does create an economy, but once the economy's established we should have every right to go back to a nonwar environment and thus remove The Idea from the minds of the people we continue to beat down with our amazing wonderfulness.

In Iraq, we could have left a long time ago, and saved ourselves large amounts of money. Instead America continues to be there and refuses to use the economy that Bill Clinton's administration fostered effectively to lead America to a new age of enlightenment: No, we're spending billions on military equipment that probably won't be used, and spending even more now that London's been attacked. I do so love watching our economy begin to crumble while gas prices go up and up and up (hindering us further, no less) in the name of national security.

Legion, why can't you rise up the officer ranks and give the higher-ups a piece of good sense?

Kalar's eyes flashed red as he picked up a new spell. THAT one would come in handy later on... He cackled madly as he lay in the grass, his bruised body creating a small imprint on where he had been so heavily slammed by Sion's combination attack. His scythe lay beside him, and a plan lay deeply embedded in his mind. Slowly, ever so slowly, he got to his feet and wiped a trickle of blood from his mouth. Using the scythe for support, he glared at Sion and smiled an eerie smile.

Kalar: "Haha, Sion... I DID play Kingdom Hearts... One with a pure heart still has a weakness."

Drive Fusion. The exact mechanics of it were still slightly unknown to Kalar, but enough observation of Sion's technique as he fought with this "Goofy" soul within his own led Kalar to believe it was a biological AND spiritual combination of two hearts that beat as one. But there wasn't really anything Kalar had that could beat as one with him. In fact, there really was only one thing Kalar could do to show Sion up at this point. What was the opposite of two hearts beating as one? No hearts beating as none, of course...

The shadows that Grey had endowed Kalar with suddenly swirled around Kalar, a deep, inky blackness that whirled and twisted and contoured as it rose up his body. Soon Kalar was nothing more than a black mass of nonlight (he was really dragging this out: Sion's transformation was going to severely hinder him if he didn't), and he walked forward, raising his hand in the air. The shadows seeped out of his hand and formed a new creature in the air... Black, winged, with a large sword, the shadows formed muscle, color, contour... An Invisible, with a black heart adorned with a red border and cross-like bottom glaring upon its chest.

"Fear. Those without hearts. The Heartless."

(thinking): 'I think I finally understand where Grey was going with this...'

"And now... I believe you called it Phase Two?"

Drive Fusion! The Invisible disappeared into a circle of shadowy flames, which surrounded Kalar and dove deeply into his heart, consuming him and giving him to the darkness that he had already begun to accept. Normally, this would turn him into a Heartless himself, but Kalar's heart was already dark enough that it wasn't necessary to take his heart and consume it... Instead, Dark Heart and Heartless combined to produce a rather... interesting... effect. When the shadows faded into visible light, the Invisible was gone, and Kalar remained. His suit's tatters and tears were repaired in full. His hair, once a light brown color, had blackened as though dyed a gothy charcoal color. Dark circles appeared beneath his eyes, as though he hadn't slept in weeks. In one hand lay his scythe, all the more reaperly with his newer, eviler form. In the other hand was gripped the Invisible's notched blue blade, an aura of shadowy energy radiating from it. Kalar could feel himself being pulled to pieces inside by the dark powers, but he kept it together. HE was in control, not the Heartless.

Ten minutes. That was all he had. That was all he would need.

"Hehe... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Kalar laughed maniacally as he dashed at Sion, leaping into the air and bringing both of his weapons down with a slamming overhead strike that would bury both weapons into either Sion or the ground, scattering a pool of darkness, almost fluid in its expansion, in a radius around the base of his strike...

Mondays, wednesdays, fridays, and saturdays find me at Toys 'R' Us, a gigantic chain of toy stores that reaches far beyond the borders of the United States and into the world venue, bringing screaming brats temporary plastic happiness on a minute basis. The sun never sets on the Toys R Us empire.

I stock shelves, deal with customers, hit on my amazingly hot co-workers (to no avail), run cash registers, and push shopping carts in 95 degree weather. The pay's alright.

Thursdays and Sundays find me working at The Lyon's Den, a small, family owned restaurant that employs me mainly through nepotism, but also because I do my best to work as hard as I can for said family because they have given me so much over the years. Pay's pretty good, it's my extra money (since my TRU money goes straight into the bank), and with it I live comfortably with the support of my parents. I work about 40-50 hours a week with both jobs combined. Sometimes more.

This is only phase one, however, of my "starving indie rock tween" lifestyle that I plan to emulate when I get out of college. My car will run on hopes and dreams and my house will be heated by good intentions.

The darkness exploded around Kalar as he enjoyed a refreshing burst of raw power that he had never felt before...

Kalar (thinking): 'What POWER! Is this what I've had inside me this entire time? Or can Grey really endow people with that degree of ability...?'

He turned to Sion, and rushed at him, arms stretched out to the side as sword and scythe swept forward, his eyes flashing blood red, then deep, Heartless yellow. He could feel his and Sion's weapons clash, spar, parry, part and sweep past each other as the two of them crossed one another's paths, but he barely noticed any semblance of pain that Sion may have inflicted upon him. Nothing, no scar, no cut or wound registered with his mind, as he obsessed only over the sensation, the moment, the here and the now, the all-consuming, all-powerful darkness that lay within him...

--------------------------------

Of course, this wouldn't be a tournament battle without any commentary...

Janus: "The Heartless? Where the hell did that come from?"

Grey: "It's ok, Janus... Kalar's just tapping into his latent Trinity powers..."

The two of them stood in the viewbox booth where Evan and Shino had conflicted two rounds previously, watching intensely as Kalar bonded with a being of pure emptiness and fought Sion to no bounds far down below. Janus looked increasingly concerned...

Janus: "Trinity powers?"

Grey: "Yes. Wisdom often holds many dark secrets that can only be revealed in extreme circumstances. Just as you are able to summon up the power of the Grey Dawn in times when great courage is needed, so too must Kalar dive into the depths of his mind to uncover a solution to a problem. What he finds is not always pretty..."

Janus: "But... The Heartless?"

Grey: "Can you deny that Kalar has a dark heart?"

Janus: "No... No, I can't..."

Grey: "And therein lies the interest. Kalar's heart, while dark, is also very strong. However, he lacks control over this strength, and in order to bring it out, he needs to immerse himself in the darkness that resides within him and learn to control it before it consumes him. Then, and only then, will he be even close to your level of power."

Janus: "Isn't this excessively dangerous? You're forcing him to learn to control his powers through a trial-by-fire against someone who technically embodies the power of light. He'll be crushed! Don't you remember what happened to Ansem? All of those legends... So many people consumed by the darkness, and you're just throwing another steak to the beast."

Grey: "Janus, you doubt the strength of Kalar's heart..."

Janus: "I don't want to see him consumed..."

------------------------------------

Darkness! Kalar could feel it all around him, swirling and pulsating with the frightening strength he had only dreamed of in the past. In sheer celebration of the fearsomeness that had enveloped him, he flourished his weapons and raged toward Sion with a series of elaborate strikes, watching in amazement as they moved ever faster, swung ever harder... It was almost as though....

As though...

He weren't directing his own movements at all...

I sighed... You just couldn't reason with this boy. Here I was, trying to help heal him of the wounds he had inflicted upon himself, and he was ready and waiting to pelt me with fireballs... Why couldn't he get it?

"Hunter, you're not going to be able to harm me by conventional means... I keep trying to tell you that. Go ahead, throw a million fireballs at me, if you have to. I'll give you that I've got a weakness, but Autistic energy, fire, ice, lightning... That's not it. It's something more."

He wasn't listening. Here I was, practically giving him the answer and he still refused to acknowledge it. That was one of my pet peeves, when people didn't take me seriously. I guess now was about the time when I decided going on the offensive might be a good idea, so I reached into my pocket, and I pulled out a pencil. That'd do pretty well for the time being. A simple notepad, located in one of my pockets, and I was off to scribbling, a quick litany to keep him occupied...

Man, I wasn't even paying attention to anything else at this point. I didn't have anything rolled up: No character sheets, no nonweapon proficiencies, no broad or tight groups, I didn't even know my own hit point total. I just sorta assumed it didn't exist, actually. And then there was THAC0... But that was speaking in D&D terms. I just had to keep Hunter going.

The scribble was almost done. I laid it on the ground when I finished it, and then I snapped my finger, watching as the words I had written came to life. They swirled off of the page, and floated in the air for a few seconds, before forming themselves into what I guessed was a rather large boombox. That'd do. I fished a pair of quarters out of my pocket, and deposited them into a small slot on the side of the sound reproduction device. Just a few more seconds, and suddenly, the speakers on it barked out the words loudly enough so that anyone in the arena could hear it perfectly over the restless commotion of the audience...

Boombox: DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION!!!"

Perfect.
