Greetings,

I am well aware of the newbie board for posts such as these. I decided not to use it, because "newbie" isn't as accurate a description as "longtime absentee", so I guess this would be a reintroduction thread. If Acmlm, Yiffy Kitten, and others I don't remember feel fit to move this thread over to the Newbie forum, so be it.

For those of you who don't know, I first came to these boards...I don't even know when at this point, though I would venture to say early 2002. I tend to go from hobby to hobby, and at that point, though hanging out on the boards for awhile, I learned a bit about ROM hacking. The emphasis here is on "a bit"...working a bit with Sonic 2, I came to realize that maybe designing video games ISN'T what I want to do for a living, not that that was ever a realistic goal anyway (New England being the hotbed for video game development that it is.

I actually stayed for a decent period, making some 1550 posts before up and leaving for no particular reason. Every now and again, I would pop in to the boards, check the ranks, and find (Inactive: 1) next to where I should have been. No big deal, and I never contacted Acmlm to find out what the matter was, so I left it at that.

As I'm sure some of you are aware, recently GameFAQs made a transition to new board code, as well as some other changes. Suffice to say that I'm being VERY generous when I use the word "transition"...the way the changes were handled, as well as difficulty with logging into my main GameFAQs account, caused me to up and leave the boards after four-plus years (If anyone here is registered there, my name may still be on the highest karma list), just like that.

Having hours of free time suddenly granted to me, I decided I needed to fill that time somehow. I had gotten a few posts in my journal from people here asking what happened to me. And so....I find myself back here, apparently in the wake of a fresh start for the boards. All the better, I say.

So, about me...my primary hobby is music, as noted in my signature. I consider myself a bass player--my avatar, which I have the strange feeling will just show "Image hosted by Angelfire," is supposed to depict stick-figure me holding a 6-string bass--though I suppose I can play guitar well enough to get by as well. I'm presently going to college, looking to major in Computer Science while minoring in Music, and half-assedly searching for a job.

So, uh, hi.

Hiryuu: Understood completely, and no disrespect taken. I actually bounced back and forth about whether to put it here or an the General Forum. As mentioned in the original post, I went with general for the reasons stated there...apparently incorrectly. Oh well.

Legion: I would hardly call myself old-school, nor a legend. Rydain posted once or twice in my journal as well asking where I went. In any event, it's good to be back.

And the funny thing about my music is that I consider what's on my page now, with the exception of "Time Marches On", to be terrible. Anyway, at the moment I'm attempting to explore free ways to improve the production quality of my music, being that I'd like to actually charge for it at some point as a sort of side job.

EDIT (Probably won't be the last): Thanks Angel.
And Kefka, Kirby's Adventure does indeed rule.

Ah, Kiwibonga, how's it going?
I should point out that I found these boards by way of the Kiwibonga boards some time back (Incidentally, I remembered a string a posts that I made on those boards while waiting for one of the first episodes of 24 to come on; that was what allowed me to place a relative timeframe on my arrival here).

Good luck with the hack, Kefka. If you so much as change even one level, you'll have made it farther than I ever did with Sonic 2. Guess I lack the patience for that sort of thing.

If I have to pick one, I'll go with Metallica's ...And Justice for All.

I'm a big fan of progressive rock--Yes, Rush, etc.--and AJFA was Metallica's most pointed album in that direction while still retaining the thrash elements that got them to that point. "Dyer's Eve" in particular stands as their last great thrash statement before they went on to simplify their music.

As has been stated several times in this thread already, I think the biggest factor in the decline in rumors (If there even has been such a decline) is the Internet. It's a lot easier to relay information via the Internet than through paper magazines or what-have-you. It effectively eliminated the necessity of having to repeat the hoax yourself to see if it was true or not.

I think my all-time personal favorite hoax/joke/whatever was EGM's 1992 April Fool's Day joke of "Fight Sheng Long in Street Fighter II". Yes, II. The process involved something rediculous and physically impossible, like fighting M. Bison to a 10-round (Note that SFII only had a maximum of four rounds) hitless draw or something.

Two things made it great: 1. In that same issue, they had a "spot the April Fool's Day joke" contest. The information for it was printed directly underneath this "trick". 2. a Hong Kong magazine actually believed it and reprinted it, without permission. EGM's response was "That'll teach them to use our material without our permission..."

Personally, I think gun control in any form is stupid, criminal or no.

In obtaining their weaponry, the Columbine killers broke an insane amount of laws that already existed. I think the number was something like 423, though I can't back that up with anything. The point is, solving unenforced legislature by heaping more legislature that won't be enforced on top of it is not the answer to stopping crimes, with guns or otherwise.

My other problem with it is that anyone who wants to commit a violent crime will commit a violent crime. Going along those lines, anyone who wants to obtain a gun badly enough and use if for crime will find a way to do it; if you take away the legal channels, they'll simply go to the black market. I'm a firm beliver in the adage "If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have them".

My login troubles transcend browser..I tried with IE on two different computers, and Firefox with one.

I actually succeeded in logging in all of one time (In Firefox), at which point none of the boards would load. Exiting and restarting firefox logged me out, at which point I couldn't get back in.

I should point out I had the login problem in the beta, and when they went to the new code, I logged out in an effort to fix the problem where my posts were disappearing into thin air. Whoops.

The layout was initially less-than-attractive, but I've basically grown used to it now. What turned me off from the boards was the fact that the administrations of two websites somehow failed to see basic issues that they should've addressed (The Gamespot user's ability to edit posts, for instance) before going to live code. The fact that they fixed these issues means little to me; my thought is that if they dropped the ball this badly once, they're liable to do it again (As I said, it wasn't the changes themselves, it was how they were implemented).

And whether I'm smart is another matter altogether, but thanks for the welcome back anyway Colleen.

I'm going to buck the trend and say go for the Genesis here. My main reasoning is that you can presumably somehow test it out on the real thing, should you decide to.

That said, do whatever it would take to get NES III into the picture as well. It's criminally underrated, mostly due to the fact that Square hasn't seen fit to give it an official release here in the States. Preferably with cool FF Origins-like enhancements such as the Bestiaries and the like.

(And randomly, didn't there used to be a search function for the boards? Am I just retarded and can't find it? Am I having delusions and it was never there in the first place? Or am I correct in thinking it disappeared? )

What I need help with is, in a general sense, the coding for an experience bar for these boards. Looking at various sources, it looks like the general way is to use an image for the "filled" part of the bar. I'm wondering if there's another way, and more specifically, I'm wondering how I force it to "do the math" involved in a correct bar (As simply putting in the mathematical operators doesn't seem to work).

And for those of your who think you're experiencing deja vu: Yes, I did ask this during my first tenure here. I seem to have forgotten in my absence though.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. Still, is there a way to do math within HTML? It could be useful depending on what I come up with.

Well, as far as music goes, you'll note in my signature that I do something that I suppose approximates composition...

Where I would be limited is in the tools used...I'm not familiar at all with composing for a given system..how does one go about that? And would we just be rearranging, or going for whole new songs?

Additionally, I'm notorious for starting things and not finishing them, so I wouldn't want to disappoint you on that front either.

And yes, I'm aware the Genesis is far from powerful...I think for most people, though, that would be the practical choice, as I would imagine it has by far the most developed emulation community.

Hmm.

I don't think I remember a Gamefreak 19, although certain memories (Most notably Yiffy Kitten [I think it was Yiffy Kitten] informing me that there was no such driver as "Kevin Newman") suggest that I was here for at least part of 2003, though it may have been 2002 as well.

And I fully intend to have fun here, don't worry.

Hey, so I'm not going completely nuts on the search thing. Hooray.

Perhaps a concrete example will help more. You'll notice in my signature that I have an HP bar. In spite of its name, it's actually designed to work off of the percentage variables in the acmlm boards, exppct and exppct2. I got this to work with a bit of thought.

Now, underneath it, I want to have another bar, labelled ENEMY (EDIT HERE: This is what accounts for the space between the end of HP and the beginning of the bar), working off of the relation to 5000 posts. The yellow segment would be based on the number I need to reach 5000, the red would be the present post count. It's this I'm having trouble with. Using just the 5000 and numposts variables (In a second table row)generates approximately the desired effect, save for the not-so-small detail that the width is now stretched out to 5000 pixels. So I'm looking for a way to convert those into percentages, in much the same way the experience variables are percentages.

It sounds like there's a way to do it in Javascript, from what you're telling me, though it'll take a bit of research on my part, as I'm less-than-well-versed in Javascript.

I'll say that Abdullah is, in fact, dead.

(Not gonna bother quoting...as Kiwibonga will tell you, I tend to break things when I try to edit quotes-within-quotes. )

Sounds good then. Maybe the Saturn would be a decent choice then, particularly if you plan on trying to put all three games in the same package. My concern from a personal standpoint is that I'm familiar with Saturn emulation at all...I know most Playstation emulators need a copy of the actual disc; do Saturn emus work the same way?

And only having to do one or two things makes me feel good. I've actually done a straight-up "Castle pandemonium" from FFII for vgmusic.com which you can check out here. That was roughly a year and a half ago. Keep in mind that I'm less adept with orchestral composition and the like than I am with more rock-ish stuff (And I would argue that I'm not even very good at that. ), so anything you get from me may well lean in that direction.

I'd have to agree that RPGS are probably some of the easier things to begin to learn to hex-edit in, simply because there are a lot of discrete values--prices of items and things--you can hunt for.

(Completely hypothetical and non-existant-in-reality example following)

For instance, let's say I'm playing a ROM of Emptyeye's Adventure: The Quest for the Custom 6-string Bass. In a town, I find a shop selling a PreSonus Tube Preamp--spiffy!--for 10 million Gold--not that spiffy. I decide that 10 million Gold is a little out of my price range, so I'd like to bring that price down a little.

First I open up my Windows Calculator to see what 10 million is in Hex. According to the Calculator, it's 989680. So I open up my Hex Editor, opening up my Emptyeye's Adventure ROM within it. Any half-way decent editor will have a Find feature like that of any Windows program, so I hit ctrl-f and input 989680 and see if it finds anything. With luck, it will, and I can edit the price down to, say, 100 Gold (64, or "000064" in this example, as I need the 0s as placeholders). I save the changes, start playing the ROM again, and wouldn't you know it, that PreSonus Tube Preamp just got a whole lot more affordable.

By the way, I'm accepting any and all donations to the "Buy Emptyeye a PreSonus Tube Preamp Fund"..I take Paypal if anyone wants to make a donation.

Peddling for money aside, I hope this hypothetical example helped show that values you can easily discern within the game--stats, prices, etc--are the easiest things to start editing from scratch.

Good luck with your endeavor, by the way.

Yeah, I tried that code earlier, except I used 3 TDs (One for the "HP", one for the yellow, one for the red). For some reason, it left a huge space between the HP and the start of the yellow bar. I didn't get it either.

*Braves attempting to edit quotes-within-quotes* Well, I see he uses blockquotes instead of tables. That's a plus...let's see if I did this right.

You mentioned that you haven't yet played through FFII. The MIDI in its "pure" form is a rendition of the theme that plays in Pandemonium (FFII's final dungeon), though you can really use it wherever you see fit, I don't mind. Just give all the proper credit.

And if I get some time, what I may try to do is to rock up FFII's battle theme. It's pretty decent, but a bit more uptempo with a four-on-the-floor rock beat could make it even better, I think.

EDIT: I have the bizarre feeling that I messed this up, even though nothing seems out of the ordinary...

While my first instinct was to laugh given that I use angelfire for hosting the images, I decided that would be a tactless and ungrateful thing to do.

So I checked out the Angelfire Plan Comparison Page, and it doesn't mention anything about PHP. So I'd have to guess "no", unless it's somehow related to perl, which I don't think it is.
