Well, there you go. One last minor release for Lunar Magic.

Yay! How have you been Fu?

Oh, not bad. While it's been a busy month, I'm hoping to be able to relax a bit next month. Maybe play a new RPG.

Fu:the link don't work anymore, I just hope your homepage aren't down

I noticed that just before going to bed yesterday... probably just a temporary glitch, as it's back up today.

I'll be sure to keep you abreast of all the little things that I find wrong with LM in hopes that if there ever is a new version (unlikely I know, but always be prepared), they can be fixed.

Well, alright. I can put it in a list somewhere, just in case something major ever turns up. But I don't really anticipate any further releases.

And for the odd few still making feature requests: Sorry, but whatever it is you're asking for, the answer is no.

Forgot about down there... oh well, at least the URL at the top of the file is updated.

It used to be set up so that changing the registry string would change the "author" string in the old style MWL files. However, that idea was abandoned in the new MWL format. IIRC, LM no longer reads or sets that registry value.

...why is it that whenever one of these "sharing/community" types of threads come up, it seems like most people are only looking for an excuse to toss around complaints in the form of suggestions for other people?

Interesting way to build a community.

The biggest problem is that in the community I really learned to hack in, nobody would help anybody.

I'm sorry to hear that.

But I don't understand how you can watch people struggling to figure something out, when you have all the information they need right there in some source code on your hard drive, and just pass it by.

Hmm, let's see... Could it be that I've already helped x people this week? That I'm extremely busy? That I'd like to get some of my own things done? That I'm not responsible to help every single person with every little problem that they could possibly have?

Honestly, HH. Just because you learned in an environment where no one helped you is no reason to go running around assuming that anyone who doesn't always give you what you want is automatically selfish/hoarding/whatever. Quite frankly, I find the insinuation rather rude, and I'm asking you politely to stop.

Jonwil would simply post the code for his Map16-changing routines instead of insisting we trace through several thousand bytes of raw hex that jumps around everywhere.

Well then, you may as well blame the right person. I believe that's the routine he decompiled and used (with my permission) from the original Demo World. I imagine he doesn't bother to release what he has, because there's not much for useful comments in it.

Not that my source is all that much better mind you, as the routine is partially based on one in the original game and I wasn't looking to document how it works. Yet when the subject comes up now and then in the forum, I've come close to digging it up and releasing it.

Needless to say, I don't exactly feel like doing that now.

Really, ROM hacking communities depend entirely on sharing information.

Communities depend entirely on people. People are far more important than information.

Which is why the complaints that inevitably come up in these kind of threads tend to bug me. There's more than enough room in the scene for everyone, whether you release source/utilities/help newbies/whatever or not. And if that ever stops being the case, people like me will simply leave.

Sorry if it's bothering you, but I simply can't understand how looking up a piece of information in your notes is going to stop you from getting your own things done. It takes me an average of one minute every time someone asks me to look something up, 3 if it's not filed correctly and I have to search for it. Unless your notes are horribly messy, well that's just bad practice.

I've already explained this several times before...

Most of my "notes" are on paper from the pre-LM 1.0 days, which have little of interest to anyone, including myself. And no, I do not have a scanner, so don't even ask. As for "notes" on my hard drive, the majority of those are just uncommented ASM traces for objects and such.

90% of the things I look up for people I either remember vaguely from memory, find in the LM source, do a trace for, or find in my mail because I've done a trace for someone else at one point. That takes time.

In particular, I'm talking about this sort of thing, which somewhat contradicts what you've said:

I'm afraid I don't follow. What contradiction?

See, I don't feel like doing a lot of things that I do for others, but I do them anyway to help people.

That's nice, but it's hardly required that you always help people whether you feel like you have the time and resources or not. And expecting that people should always be available to give up their time for you at any moment for no reason, is simply wrong. It is, in fact, utterly selfish.

People ask me to look something up while I'm working all the time, and it's never stopped me from finishing what I was working on (unless I didn't know the answer and suddenly decided to find out ).

Interesting how you seem to just keep making comparisons to yourself... Yes HH, I can see that you apparently have plenty of time to spend on such things. Good for you. But perhaps you should try thinking about it from someone else's perspective for a change.

If you don't want to post your information or if you've done such a crappy job filing it that it becomes a chore, then fine. I appreciate all the help you have given everyone already.

Fine. So I respectfully ask that you stop bringing me up as an example of hording. As I said, it's rude.

Er... what do you mean by 'enough room'?

Enough room, as in we can all be part of the same scene and get along. We can all have a part to play.

Making unreasonable complaints such as what you're doing now merely makes people feel unwelcome. And as I said, that's a pretty strange way to build a community.

Somewhat, yes. I actually started out with a translation, but I made a basic type of map editor as part of it.

An editor is a pretty good way to learn about ROM hacking, but expect to spend a lot of time at it.

When I remake the patch using All Stars + World as the original, it only comes out as 540 KB or so.

Also, is Mario supposed to die on the title screen?

I'd suggest trying to find a different copy of the original ROM.

Nothing... have you tried opening it in 1.62 to make sure it isn't just your ROM?

Export/import all modified levels (there's a menu command for that, you don't have to do them one by one), shared palettes, graphics, and basically anything else you've modified.

This again brings up the issue of tidying up your notes. If they weren't so messy, 'giving up your time to help' wouldn't be an issue.

The few notes I've made have served me just fine, for the tasks they were meant to accomplish and in the time periods they were meant for.

I'm not primarily into ROM hacking to spend my time building data repositories... for myself or anyone else.

I only mentioned you that one time, and I debated with myself quite a bit that I shouldn't mention you.

No, you've mentioned me twice now. In the other thread, and this one.

I'm sorry, but it just drives me crazy when someone has what someone else needs and won't give it to them, no matter what the reason.

So I've noticed. Your compassion in that respect is commendable, but there's something to be said for listening to reason too.

I haven't checked the .dsc file...

You should... that's where the custom block tool tips come from.

Whenever I try to use a palette gradient, I can't get bakc out to normal copy-and-paste palette editing, even through closing LM.

Sounds like the Alt key on your keyboard is sticky.
