Not 100% certain it'll work since a few of the sprites really hate to be changed, but get HyperHacker's Mario World Reconfigurator, take the sprite code for, say, a moving coin, and replace the mushroom with it. it's not the same thing as messing with the thrown sprite, but should work if you never plan to use powerups, which you say.
