Well it seems people are starting to hack SMB3 again, and with my recent hack, I've decided to keep notes of everything I find in the game, but, there are somethings I'll never even come across because I don't plan hacking that certain aspect of the game. So, if there's ever any data you wanted for your SMB3 hack (NO ASM HACK REQUEST) just let me know here. I tried this once before with little to no response, but I'll try it again. In the next month or so, I'll release the (probably still in progress) document containing tons of info about the game

I think Boom Boom is the only enemy that drops something, cept maybe koopa kids. If there's any other enemy you had in mind, lemme know.

Actually, they're not. Throwing different enemies based on level is a bit iffy, because the Lakitu WILL through throw a different enemy if your on a Hill level type than any other type. So I'll find the data that lets you edit which level type changes what he throws and what he will throw, not to mention what he normally throws.

Posted on 04-26-04 05:23 PM, in Is there any hacks/utilities for any N64 games?? Link
I don't think rom hacking won't be as it is with NES/SNES with the N64, PSX and beyond ever. Why? Because you're dealing with games that are built with compilers, thus, a lot of the asm you see is bloat code, thus, figuring out what does what will be a lot harder to do. However, with the plethora of data found with Gamesharks and other cheat devices, rom hacking N64 games I think could very well be possible, but seeing full blown hacks I don't ever see happening.

lol thanks for posting that Jaspile, it saves me the trouble of having to look for it. And yeah, Jaspy's right, Boom Booms don't have stomp health since there "health" determines their attitude through a jump table. But Koopa Kids has been found and so has their fireball health.

M3I doesn't have many bugs, and they're all from using Freeform mode.

Unforunately, there is no universal music editor, or even a music editor for SMB or 99% of the games that exist. NES wise, all games have their own music formats, thus, a universal music editor is highly improbable. I'm not totally sure on SNES or other console music, but there doesn't seem to be a universal editor for their formats either.

Oh, I never said changing NES music couldn't be done, but a Universal Music editor for NES games isn't possible.

As for SMB3, I collect most 1-Ups cuz I go through every friggin secret area and collect everything I can, even if I don't need it. I usually end the game with somewhere at 80 lives.

Not only that, but unless you were working non-stop, you did world 4 rather quickly. And like BMF said, without screenshots or some more information, I'm not going to download it. For all we know, it could be a few changes in each level.

This is impossible to do because an NES ROM has physical changes in a cartridge which the data is read from, this is ROM for a reason: read-only memory. There's absolutely no way to over-write an NES ROM.

You can do a lot of small ASM hacks that add up by changing just 1 byte in the game. I'm documenting a lot of the game's data and routines to make it easier for people to make a better hack outside the current editor limitations. As for sending out tutorials to do the more complex things, that's something I'm not really willing to do since it involves ASM hacking and basically figuring out how a game works. This is general knowledge you can obtain from learning how to ASM hack. But my notes will lead you to the right direction without having to spend days looking at disassembled code. And as for the seasons aspect: There won't be a seasonal aspect. I said this before but I guess it's easy to over look. I took that out because it limited the level themes and ideas I could have (I mean a beach looks the same in winter, fall, summer or spring). Since I'm positing in here, I'll post a few screens of something I was working on yesterday.

Yes, that's a thwimp, but more importantly, he's breaking blocks. I won't say anymore

Ok a few things that might help with your problems:

First, if you extend ANY object past 1A vertically, it will show up at the top 16 tiles down the line because the game will "wrap" any extra tiles that extend beyond the displayable vertical area.

As for the sky problem: this may be due to the fact that the game uses a different tile and/or TSA to draw the sky in hilly/underground levels than those used in plains/dungeon/other levels. Try going to the graphics set of the hills and make sure that the 05, 06, 07, and 08 tiles are cleared out with color 0 (the background color). Unfortunately, I haven't messed with auto-scroll object very much beyond horizontal autoscrolling levels. Anything I figure out on it I'll add to my notes and post here.

As for your level bugging it: it may be because your level you created or modified in free form mode exceeds the normal size of the level, thus, when you go to find another level that's messed up and fix it, it'll spill over to a previous level or the like. Or the level data that you created is corrupted. M3I's freeform can be buggy at times, but as far as modifying a level outside of freeform mode, it has no known bugs. I highly suggest not using free form mode unless you understand that you can't just freely throw extra things into a level or are doing all your levels from scratch (which I think I'm the only SMB3 hacker who's done that since it's not the easiest thing to do).

I think he means don't bother with trying to hack by assembling code and inserting it into a rom, but rather, write some machine code via changing an op code or an operand. Start small. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day...
