Untrue. If a noob is willing to listen and picks up on things, then many of the senior hackers will offer them help. However, what I think the problem is is that some think that ANYBODY can do ROM-Hacking and they can't. ROM-hacking is an art and skill that not anyone can do. There's a lot of soft skills required before tackling such a hobby. Patience, analytical and logical skills, a basic understanding of how computers work (like RAM, ROM, etc), and the ability to COMMUNICATE well. People who expect this stuff to fall in their lap get shunned away. Those who seriously want to be taught go to those who are willing to teach. When I was a noob, no body bothered to teach me. I started at Challenge games and received no help so I came to Acmlm's where there would be help. I asked stupid questions and got shunned away but I _stuck with it_. If we all stopped to teach every nooby that wanted to learn to hack like the pros, we'd never get our own stuff done.

Plus, since ROM-hacking requires several skills, you must realize that you must find the appropriate tutorials yourself. They ARE out there, I've used them. Learning hex, learning how to use cheat searches, finding palletes, etc. I've seen them and used them all.

2) People see editors that can make all sorts of changes to a game, and immediately think that these editors can do absolutely everything. They set unrealistic goals, then quit altogether when they find out the amount of work involved.

This is mostly the case with Lunar Magic and need not apply to most of ROM-hacking.

3) People hoard info. Really, when someone asks for a simple address or some such, and you know it, will it kill you to open your notes/source code/whatever and spend 2 minutes finding it? Messy notes are not an excuse. Take some time to organize, and you won't have this problem.

People don't hoard info as much as you think. I believe the problem is that they change data but don't document it. I know that's _my_ biggest problem. I have a lot of data that I share but a lot of it I simply don't bother to write it down.

This will edit the tiles on the map screen (along with 16x16 objects in the levels). So you can blank out the entire graphic banks for the maps and use this tool and a graphics editor to create completely custom map tiles.

What you want to do is run the trace logger and create a breakpoint for the game the snap on. Once the emulator snaps on a break point, the last 10,000 instructions that wre logged will be displayed in the trace logger window.

I think the problem isn't YY-Chr but how the game stores it's tiles. YY-Chr is very simple with it's design and works very similiar to something like MS Paint. The tiles look very weird and odd cuz that's how they're stored in the game. Go to the map tiles and go to the box that says "Normal" (bottom left hand corner) and select "FC/NES x16". This should rearrange the tile layouts so that they make much more sense for you. Hope that helps.

Recommend me some easy ones from either MAX or MAX2 on PS2 plz.

MAX - Whoa, most of those 9 footers are tough ones. The easiest ones being Electro Tuned and Matsuri Japan.

Try the Paranoias, tough 8 footers that could pass as easy 9s.

MAX2 - I suppose Twilight Zone is the easiest 9 footer on here but only after you've mastered it, otherwise you have your work cut out for you.

A bit of a bump but I wanted to express my endorsement for this thing. I've started to create a database for Super Mario Bros. 3 using this program, so I'm now relying on you Matrixz to update this thing regularly! This would be a perfect answer for me to release my knowledge of SMB3 without having to write long explanations or write it in neat notes (plus makes it a lot easier for people to use the knowledge).

Completely pointless thread.

This applies to actual hacks as well as editors.

It's about time that good ideas and programs get attention, this, this sucker is going to get stickied for a while.

Posted on 10-14-05 09:51 PM, in Stickying threads of good releases. Link
Often times people complain about not getting enough attention for their releases and often times they feel over shadowed. So, for now on, when I see something released, if I or perhaps an other mod think it deserves some attention, I will sticky the thread for a small amount of time so that it receives a bit more attention than normally. If a thread goes more than a few days without attention though, I will unsticky it and let it sink.

I hope these efforts will alleviate some of the stress new comers feel when trying to mark their spot on the map. Note, just posting a very small demo or ideas of a hack won't get stickied. It has to be a substantial demo or pogram release before I will sticky it. This is the criteria I will use for stickying those threads. Other mods may do so at their own discretion or this may be an idea only I execute, we'll see.

I say joke around with her about the idea of dating. Get her friends to ask her about it or something. Do a bit of testing and just play around, if she takes it well, then there ya go, otherwise you may want to stay on dry land.

Very interesting concept here. I like how all of this looks, yet it's a very simple idea. Definitely gonna let this get some attention for a while.
