*bump*

I just implemented a new Hub World that's similiar to Mario Adventure's except for a very distinct difference:

This hub works in that you start out with access to World 1. After completing it, paths will open up leading to 2 other worlds. Completing another world will open up other paths and so on. So essentially you can "complete" the game through only 5 worlds, but maybe there's a surprise for opening up all the paths?

Edit: Oh and notice, World 1 is now labeled with the rest of the worlds. Good ole sprite allocation expansion!

ok, I hate to say it, but iamhiro, you're spreading misinformed opinions and really should not be relied on.

So I'm going to consult with other, more knowledgable hackers and come up with a list and possibly an all round ROM-Hacking FAQ so threads like this will stop.

I'll let this stay open for now for further discussion on emulators used for hacking, but I'm keeping my eye on you guys (the other eye sorta rolled out of it's socket, when I find it I'll also keep it on you guys).

Yes, real time CHR-ROM editing is nice, but editing tiles in their standard layout is often confusing and hard to do, as tiles are hard to locate.

As a newbie, I did my grpahics editing in Nesticle and it was a horribly hard and cumbersome ordeal (http://www.geocities.com/dahrkdaiz/world-4-sp.bmp for an example of what I did in Nesticle, versus http://dahrkdaiz.panicus.org/Screens/602.png which I did in YY-Chr). Getting out of using Nesticle for graphics editing was the best thing for my artwork. Not to mention it's hard to rip graphics using Nesticle

With programs like TLP or YY-Chr, you can rearrange the tiles so that they're easier to find and piece together, not to mention you have drawing tools like rotate, cut and paste and shifting, so even though real-time graphics editing is a novel idea, it doesn't hold a candle to editors created specifically for graphics. It's as easy as edit, save, reload rom, load state.

Anyways, the point is that Nesticle's "saving grace" doesn't save it much. Sure it's good if you have a shitty slow PC, but GBA's PocketNES runs better than Nesticle on the slowest of PC's.

Nesticle may be good on ancient PC's for playing games, but as a hacking emulator, it's pure crap. Even on my old 233MHz Pentium I used FCEUd with the sound off. It was slow, but it was worth it for the hacking utilities.

Edit: Oh and uhm, your list is still flawed, so I'm closing this thread unless BMF wants to open it back up. There's tons of arguing and you're still stuck on saying Nesticle is one of the best "hacking" emulators.

Challenge taken, in fact, I was working on it since 15 minutes ago, you obviously aren't listening to the majority of rom hackes who are saying that for ROM Hacking purposes, Nesticle is one of the worst emulators to use. And woops! I forgot to close this

Well I've had this one setting on the warmer for a while, waiting to be consumed. The first attempt at Dream a Dream's original version ended with crap Oni only steps and out of sync. Now, I added light, Standard, Heavy and better Oni steps, along with a new logo and background and resynced.

Light - 4
Standard - 6
Heavy - 7 (albeit a tough 7)
Oni - 9

Enjoy

Captain Jack or Holic are good examples at the arcade where the arrows practically melt into the background, making it really hard to see.

Edit: BTW Hiryuu, I HATE YOU FOR EVER INTRODUCING ME TO THIS SONG. I was right, I sung it all day today

ShadowSonic: You wouldn't use Nestice for an SNES rom, you'd use SNESticle.

iamhiro: Nesticle the only emulator "powerful enough" to display tile numbers? AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH

You need to look at FCEUxd for sure man, you have no clue what's going on.

For text editors: FCEUxd has a built in hex editor with .tbl loading support, albeit not the most powerful hex editor for text hacking, but definitely the quickest since changes are in real time and instant.

I heard this on a car commercial recently and I was plagued by the hypnotic tunes and I just had to do a simfile of it. Don't expect any difficulty out of this, as it's meant to look good on pad and provides no challenge on keyboard.

Light - 3
Standard - 5
Heavy - 7

If you can, try it on pad, it's really fun to do all the spins and turns .

Posted on 04-06-05 03:25 AM, in What is LEAST important in a SMW hack? Link
I voted sprites:

I think ASM is important if you can do it. You're very hard pressed to think of innovative level ideas using the existing game engine. With ASM hacking, (which, btw, don't forget is how custom blocks are made) you can create small changes in the engine to create new situations!

I was reading about creating a game and they were giving ideas and tips on how to keep the player interested and how to create challenge. The best way I saw, was rather than increase difficulty by making similiar situations more and more extreme, constantly changing the situation with something new, fresh, that requires a different technique keeps the challenge constantly changing, yet, doesn't make things too hard.

And because of this, ASM hacking can provide the situation changes needed to keep a hack fresh.

Of course this goes hand in hand with level deisgn, making proper use of the ASM hacks is very important.

Graphics also help change the feel of a hack. You can make a bright, sunny overworld seem like a dark, murky underworld instead, thus, keeping the player interested in the hack.
