The Tennessee Volunteers... GO BIG ORANGE!!!

Seriously though, Tennessee seems to take the biggest pride in their college team (from University of Tennessee, which I WAS attending for the past 3 years...) and we show it. They say that during football season, the high amounts of orange in the city causes birth defects in babies due to the radiation coming from the shade of orange we use... (which would explain a lot of defect idiots here).

pfft, I just realized that I have a similar shade of pink in my layout that Hiryuu does... And I stole this shade from a hello kitty image. Damn you, always a step ahead of me

The only way I've found sprite TSA is using ASM tracing, I haven't noticed a real pattern in the data either, unless someone else notices a pattern, you'll be out of luck unless you know how to trace ASM

holy crap, is that what I think it is? A text editor in the rom viewer? Will it support .tbl files? If so, this could totally speed up NES translation hacks like crazy.

I love milk, but not just any milk, it must be 2% or skim (I loathe whole milk). But I don't like to drink it when eating warm pastries (warm cake, pancakes, etc) cuz it seems to really hurt my teeth

Posted on 09-08-04 02:36 AM, in Important: giving rom-hackers self-confidence Link
Well the problem for me is that I didn't play a lot of NES games frequently as a kid, thus, a lot of games that get hacked, I've never even beaten or really fell in love with, thus, I won't try it.

When there's a game I've played that gets hacked, I totally give feed back, but it's not always good and may not promote motivation. If someone is heading in the wrong direction with their ideas on level design, it's not good to let them keep going that way, a good hacker would take bad criticism and capitalize on it and realize where their weak points are, I know I have.

Though what I have to say may not mean much to the "lesser known" hackers seeing how my name and Mario Adventure are splattered across the internet, but I didn't start off like that. I had my share of bad hacks and not getting noticed, but I took what I learned and made small steps until I reached where I am now.

To all you hackers that need motivation: try to include things in your hack and take screens of these parts. Try to make sure it's an interesting screenshot and would make someone go "hmmmm, what's up with this scenario" and when you make a post about your hack, don't tell much about that screen. You can build a lot of hype by shrouding your hack in mystery and letting small peaks out and letting a demo speak for itself. Thus, if you get ppl to play your hacks, you're more likley to get feed back and there's your motivation.

I hate to say it, but SMB is the hardest game to make ASM hacks for, since there's a lack of space without rom expansion.

It's been a while since the public has seen anything about Coin Quest. I can't do much more about levels because M3I has ceased to work on my machine. So until hukaa gets a free form mode working in his editor, I'll have to stick to adding more ASM hacks...

And what have I added? Well first off, those who played the demo noticed that Luigi went behind certain objects (like water), but this wasn't applied to enemies. Now, the foreground effect will work on enemies too.

See the fishy that's behind the water!

Now all the power up forms have the Luigi sprites in the game.

Luigi in his sweet Tanooki suit, tailored just for him. Also, the map sprites have been changed to Luigi sprites now!

The title of the hack is no longer "Red Coin Quest" but rather, "Coin Quest". Why? I called it "Red" Coin Quest so you cound distinguish between normal coins and red coins, but now, "normal" coins don't exist. What happened to them? They're now cherries!

Luigi's about to get his Vitamin C via a pile of cherries. Yes, those frozen cherries do melt when a fireball is thrown at them and can appear in any level, not just ice ones.

So what's the purpose of cherries? Now when you play, the coin tile meter in the lower right corner will now be a clock tile that fills up. Once it's filled, a sound will play, indicating you now have the stop watch power. Pressing Down+Select at this point will activate it, freezing all sprites on the screen for a few seconds.

Luigi uses the power, and 3 seconds later, the power is still active!

In the demo, I said that you could re-enter levels but only during demos. Well, that's changed now. Now you can re-enter levels you've beaten with a small catch: You cannot increase your coin count or your score in a previously beaten level. Also, you can now collect more than 1 suit from a giant ? block per world. Finally, if you're in a beaten level, you can pause the game and press Select to exit the level, a'la SMW!

Also, now when your air-meter has nearing depletion, a sound effect is played to let you know you're about to drown.

And now the really cool part. I added a feature a day or so ago that adds some complexity to the way you can kick a shell.

Now, if you're holding a shell, releasing B will kick it forward. Simple enough. If you hold Up and let go of B, you'll kick it up without a spin. If you're holding Up+Left/Right, then you'll kick the shell with a spin.

The difference between a spin and no-spin is that a spin will have hit detection: killing enemies, busting bricks, and will continue going foward when it lands. A no-spin shell can be catched mid-air (spinning shells can't) and will stop when it touches the ground.

The speed of the shell when it's kicked up depends on the speed of Luigi when he releases B. The faster he's going, the faster the shell goes.

Finally, if you hold Down when you let go of B, you'll kick the shell foward without a spin.

These new Shell kicking techniques can be used to make some interesting puzzles.

As you can see, is still shaping up to be a good one indeed. As soon as I can get an editor with free form mode working, I'll start working on levels again and have another demo out ASAP.

You guys wanted a movie? Well here ya go: This requires the DivX codec and is under 500Kb It's pretty bad quality but it's small and it shows the different ways to kick a shell now

And I gotta give bbitmaster props for making this hack easy to do. Everyone wanted an upward shell kick in Mario Adventure, but I claimed it was too complicated to do so. Now with FCEUxd, I was able to add that and a more complex system in a mere half hour.

I must say Im quite impressed with the look of the design of the levels. Too bad there's not a demo yet. Seems you put some good work into this to make sure the levels look right. But the "level" names and the boss name (Snazzydojo?) seems a bit out of place considering the quality of the screens.

I chose no, only because of this:
Cows eat grass
Turkeys eat berries and the like
Fish eat plankton (atleast, some do)
Chickens eat corn/worms etc
Pigs eat... er.. slop...

Case in point: most of the animals that we eat aren't carnivorous (i.e., they don't eat other animals, and technically, insects aren't animals) or omniverous. When's the last time you ate lion or snake? Humans would be nasty tasting unless they were veggiterians

Trial and error folks, trial and error. You'll never know or understand something unless you dive in and break your rom multiple times. No great ASM/ROM hacker ever got there without breaking something in the process.

Ok you handled Hilly and Underground object type levels as both hilly, when they're two seperate banks in the rom, and thus, should not be treated the same as object sets go. When I created a blank level manually and went to add objects and saved my rom, it seems the end of the rom wasn't properly calculated or something, at any rate, I couldn't save any files properly with free-form mode. Also, add some hot keys! Other than that, great job so far

Not to mention all the piracy. If there wasn't any piracy, Bill Gates would easily beat everyone down for richest person on Earth. A few years ago, I calculated that he could give everyone in my city $155 and still have money to spare.

I got my license when I was 18, right before I graduated high school. In fact, I got to drive to my ceremony, it was the coolest thing. But I did fail the driver's test the first time, I didn't even get out of the parking lot. I cut it back way too fast and she told me to pull up and get out... I had failed. That BITCH! Anywho, the second time, I did just fine. Now a car feels like an extension of my body. Quite honestly, I don't know how I survived before I got my license. Being dependant on others for transportation is a real bitch
