A bit of advice for CT hacks: Many roms have debug rooms that allowed the programmers to skip to various parts of the game to test stuff out and not have to play through the game to get to other worlds, locations and changes. I think it's a good idea for people to code one themselves, a room that won't be in the final, just have people that warp you to locations upon talking to them, different time periods, a good little space that will help with getting places and such, like an in game shortcut. When the hack is complete, it can be deleted, or left as a secret of sorts.... all kinds of possibilities. There seems to be one left in Chrono Trigger, though it has no real map. I was able to make the event playable by switching it to Millenial Fair, change the X/Y positions of the 3 sprites (two prehistoric guys and a cooking smoke sprite, the two guys warped you to some endings, and the smoke wrote something to Memory, though I'm not sure what just yet..) |

Well, with Temporal Flux released in the rom hacking forum, and the possiblity of a SNES emulator for the DS (It's more than possible for perfect snes emulation, the GBA came close), the idea of Chrono Trigger, or any of the hacks being on it is totally possible in the future. I just played the DS for the first time today, and it has to be the coolest thing ever! The idea of playing an SNES, NES, Gameboy, etc game on it would just make me...EXPLODE with happiness... Besides, Square seems to be warming up to Nintendo here lately, so an actual CT type game for the DS isn't all that far fetched. Like I said though, if not, then emulation may just be the answer. |

The SRM file is the saved game file, not the saved state file. The zsnes savestate file will have an extension similar to '.zst' The SRM should be useable in both emulators. I haven't seen any 'Savestate Conversion' software tools, but If I come across any, I'll provide you with a link. --------------edit--------------- Maybe this page will help? http://www.zophar.net/tech/files/Zsnes_to_Snes9x.htm *chickenlump bookmarks it himself for future reference* (edited by Chickenlump on 11-27-04 01:02 PM) |

I attempted to play around with the sprite assembly, but my knowledge on such things is lacking. Here's my notes on them though. A tool, or editor for this would make me a happy chicken...custom sprites, and the ability to peice them together ... Character Sprite Assembly starts at 1C27B0 Each frame of Crono's animation is a total of 40 bytes each. 32 of those bytes are 2 byte integers that determine which tile of graphics are used to piece him together, from 00 and up. The 32 bytes are followed by 8 bytes that determine (I think) how the 32 are distributed, like Crono's death animation is wider than it is tall. Also, thanks for the XML file, I think I'll have some fun with it now.. -------------------------------- Here is my largely oudated compressed graphics description list. This might help with graphics editing a little bit. I'll update this now that everything is released. For now though, just subract 200 bytes from all of these offsets (or just re-add the header with SNEStool and use these as-is). -----------------Chrono Trigger Compressed GFX Addresses WIP----------------- ---------------------------Last Modified 7/20/03----------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 031400 - Arrow, Numbers 0-9,Letters A B C D E F 038200 - Title Screen Graphics or epoch choose a time (Title) 0410B8 - map tiles 041F3A - map tiles 042E32 - map tiles 043CA0 - map tiles- Town 044A39 - map tiles- more town 0457D7 - Guardia Castle, Town Lighthouse, Well 046623 - map tiles 0474C2 - forest map tiles 04824F - Cities in Domes 049033 - map mountain 04A045 - map mountain and other 04AF56 - map houses 04BF49 - map domes 04C904 - map trees and some building 04D5FF - map tiles? 04DD31 - kingdom of zeal map tiles (and that blue transparent triangle dome) 04EA82 - More zeal map tiles 04F9AF - clouds 04FF72 - unkown 050200 - background, clouds of some kind 0510E8 - clouds, rocks 052026 - more zeal, waterfall, rocks.... 05301C - more zeal 053EC9 - clouds 054C9B - trees ? 055C48 - mountain from prehistoric map I thinik... 0567A5 - volcano 057351 - bottom part of volcano with lava and a giant crater 058200 - map castle, more rocks 058D02 - Path Leading Into The Mountainside (map) 05915A - map stuff, mountain, little craters....other stuff 0599F7 - unknown 059A48 - unknown 059AAC - unknown 040200 - Overworld Map Tiles (Map) 059C56 - Character Map Sprites (Map) 05B314 - Epoch Map Sprites (Map) 05B998 - Lavos Map Sprites (Map) 05C8ED - Black Omen Map Sprites (Map) 05CF21 - Map Boat,Map Vortex,Map Balloon (Map) 05D797 - Smoke From Houses (Map) 05DA0B - Question Mark Map Year (Map) 05DC88 - Map Birds, Map Years, Map Epoch (Map) 05E2F7 - Top of Magus' Castle (Object) 05ECAF - single round map object 05EF14 - Map Dactyl (Map) 060200 - Mt. This DVD has really amazed me. I didn't go see it in theatres, and am highly impressed overall with the film. I do wish they would have been a tad more faithfull to the book, and added in more stuff...longer movies don't bother me at all. I WANT good movies to be 3 or more hours long. Really. If the movies continue to get better after each one like they have been, then Goblet of Fire should be awesome. (the Aunt Marge scene, btw, was done perfectly) |

I've been using SNEStool to add the header back in, for switching back and forth between the different editors. It works just fine, and doesn't take too much time to do. |

Having played all of the choices, I have to say I'm the most impressed with the GC. There isn't a lack of mature games for it, which does indeed seem to be some peoples only beef with anything Nintendo related. Mature games seem to only have one selling point anyway, like a gimmick, and gimmicks never last long, no matter how violent, or how bouncy the game. I have no problems with the XBox or PS2, but there's nothing that stands out and grabs my particular interests and makes me want to drop my GC and just forget it existed. It's games are great, and it is second in my all time favorite consoles, right after Dreamcast. |

This was my first event edit attempt (successful event edit anyway), and I thought I'd post it here as well. Eventually I'll make a better one, but with a little imagination and about an hour of free time, this is what I got. http://www.geocities.com/chickenlump/zealbattle.zip Apply to an unheadered ROM and head into Gato's Exhibit (well prepared and very high levels too....though that may not even help any..heh...). When I first played the game, I spent a whole year looking for how to save Schala. Odd, that one of my first hacks for the game has you attempting to destroy her...not that it's going to be easy to do of course. (edited by Chickenlump on 12-02-04 10:13 PM) |

Aye, it was Frenzied Panda, and he did split and remove all his things. Pity all that uglyness took place concerning him, he had quite a bit of talent. The hex editor was called Hex Sniper (and sometimes Sniper's Hex ), I'll see if I can find his stuff If I have it archived, and make it available somewhere. -----edit----- Alas, all I could find on the net was this old page with the binary I already had, no source included. It's still worth a download, however, It really is a great Hex Editor. http://reminesce.elazulspad.net/SnipersHex.htm (edited by Chickenlump on 12-02-04 09:11 PM) |

My next boss hack will be in Ninja format. I've heard about Ninja, and it sounds great, and all my future patches will be available in both formats, or just Ninja eventually (slowly fade out IPS eventually...). I'll tone down the difficulty as well, I've had one user tell me it would be easier to destroy the Death Star with his bare hands than defeat these three. That made my day actually..heh.. The Ninja patch saving in Temporal Flux sounds fantastic, but would it only make a patch with the changes Temporal Flux itself makes, or scan the entire ROM for changes and make the patch? |

He has mentioned that TF will eventually support everything, meaining maybe even all the things that you use the other editors for, making switching between programs unneccisary. He's documenting the rom itself, meaning the game itself, meaning the header added on by a copier has *no* part of it. There's alot of ways of adding a header back on, a few clicks and it's there, it's not like it takes hours out of your time to do anyway. AND untill such time as EP sees fit to add these kinds of things in (if) I'm working on a Chrono Tweaker that only supports unheadered roms, at which time, I'll make the original Tweaker unavailable for download. |

I've been changing the Layer 3 Tileset to FF, that seems to work quite well, if that helps any at all.

Your post was very unkind to my 56k connection, as your entire post was a huge picture file. Next time, please just post the problem pics as pics, and your descriptive text as text. The entire look of your post could have been done with a properly coded layout. |

There is no sort of guide for this sort of thing, and if there were, it would just be general advice. The best advice, however, is to look at how every event is done. Or, start with a blank event, and build one from scratch. Attempt to do simple things at first, like ONLY load a single sprite. Once you have a sprite loaded in your location, then add on, like make him say something, or have him walk around. It's all about starting small and working your way to more complex things. It can be very daunting, but just look at some locations, think about what happens in the game there, and think about what each command does that makes it happen in the game. If all else fails, just copy and paste over some event code from a location, and tweak it to your liking. You would be just as suited to write a guide for it as about anyone here, it's a fairly new editor, and everyone's a noob. If that makes you feel any better.

One of the things I learned (common senses...tingling) is that when I change an event to a different location, 90% of the time, I forget to change the X/Y positions of objects, sprites, etc.... since they are different for each map. I kept wondering where everything is, turns out they were there, just off screen. Even if this doesn't help in this situation, it's a good thing to remember for the slow of mind. *hangs head in shame* So now, if something doesn't appear to load, I remember to check the position of the objects. |
