You don't extract pics from your rom to show off your hack. You post screenshots of the game running in an emulator. When the screen is perfect in the emulator, and you want to show the world your screen, you hit Alt and Print Screen at the same time. It saves the emulator window to the clipboard. You open paint, or some image program, and paste. Now save that image as PNG or some small format (never bmp). Upload your pictures to a free host of some kind, like http://www.photobucket.com and link to them here.

Peekin's Tileview program has always been one of my favorites. It does a good job, I have found level data in quite a few games using it. Of course, all games are going to be different, but do give these programs a try or 3. Everything that looks suspicious (many chunks of rectangular shapes for example ) corrupt around there.

The two mentioned tools and corrupting can be surprisingly effective.

Evil Peer makes a very fantastic point, don't base your entire rom-hacking experience on any one community online. Base your experiences on what you can do, what you have done, and what you think you can do. Coming online to message boards and chat rooms can help you, but if you only rely on it, you may find yourself giving up a tad too soon. Just diving right in with what you know and what you can find out really is the best advice.

I started out with just basic tile editing, making small graphics changes to games. Then I learned to hex edit all kinds of data from publicly available documents. Once you learn to work with what's available, then you can move on. Once I had a firm grasp of what was already available, I tried my hand at finding data on my own. Finding stuff to edit that wasn't publicly known, or released. Random corruption goes a long way at first to find your first bits of data. Then, once random corruption failed me, I started noticing patterns in the hex that were almost easily recognizable, and began narrowed down corrupting. Corrupting stuff that looked familiar, or interesting. I'm just now learning to use tracers and debuggers to find data. Work your way up to harder things at your own pace. It's worth it, especially when you feel like you have accomplished something. I care less what other people think I should be doing, or when I should be doing it, I'd run myself ragged if I did.

Even if you can't find any documents or help, if you have even the smallest idea of what's going on, jump in and try it out. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Even if it's a hobby you aren't going to be in long term, you will learn quite a few interesting things along the way.

I did help Zeality awhile back to rip all the spc's out of the Prerelease. It's an interesting set. It can be found on his site http://www.chronocompendium.com.
It's a huge site, so I will link you directly to the prerelease soundtrack page (not that you shouldn't take a look around while you're there, theres much to read through, it's an interesting site) .

It's been so long since I've played it, but I remember the wolf thief taking a treasure in Narshe as soon as you take an item out of a chest.

I would just like to say, though I don't hack SMB3, this is a nice editor. Every now and then I see an editor that just screams 'proffesional'. This is one of those editors. Not because of the features or anything like that, but because it's so well done, and polished that I immediately think "This guy should be programming for a living, this program is solid."
Polish and proffesionalism count for alot, and for me, it's more important than the game the program is editing, or it's features. I'm impressed with the program itself. The obligitory 'Good Job' and I look forward to all further releases of this and any other of your projects.

What do you suck at? What do you need help understanding? Do you know how many people are willing to help you out? Quite a few. There are excellent SMW hackers here, and some not so excellent SMW hackers, but all have at least something in common. They ALL are willing to give themselves a break when at first they don't succeed. If they fail at something, they don't quit and move on. They stay, and try harder untill they get it right. Giving up is no way to go. I've witnessed some of the lowliest hackers come from "where do I start?" to "I can help you!". Some people live untill 120 years old. How old are you? Is there a deadline on your hobbies? If not, stay awhile and learn, and have a good time with everyone here. If so........ Umm.... WHY IS THERE A DEADLINE ON YOUR HOBBIES?!?!?!?!? (In the nicest way possible of course)

As long as you think of this as fun and not work, then you should be just fine. Work is something you have to do. Fun is something you want to do. Hacking should be something you enjoy. If you suck, it's ok, as long as you enjoy yourself. It's not like you will suck forever. And not everyone will think you suck.

I don't know if this has been answered or not yet, but does this hack require two players? That would kind of suck, I like hacks, but there is only me here, and I can't play with my toes.

If Gronky can be controlled by Player One, or computer controlled that would be alright, but if he is 2nd player only, then this hack is going to dissapoint a few people. If it's labeled as "You must have 2 players to play this hack" then that would be O.K. Nobody would walk into this hack unsuspecting.

Of course, I'm uninformed about the 2nd player sprite itself, that's why I brought this up. Just wanting to know weather I should hype myself up for this now, or not. Other than that, of course, looks good.

NO...please.... I do this enough on my own without the help of any program.

I've only tried tracing Super Mario World and Chrono Trigger ( I only have like...3 roms currently... time to ...go on a downloading spree...) . If I had come across an error, I would have told you about it. It traces CT perfectly well for my liking if that helps any

If I must request a bug however, I'd like it to mistakenly connect to my printer and accidentaly start printing $20 dollar bills perfectly. Cause that would suck. Alot.

It has Vincent as the main character, it's in the FF7 world and will more than likely feature or cameo various FF7 characters, and it's a GAME and not a movie. For some of us, that's enough right there. Even if it does turn out awful, by the time I find out, Square will already have their $$$$.

Hear that Square? It's almost like I'm asking for more FF7. *hint hint*

Coffee. Lots of coffee. Helps me concentrate and keeps me kind of "floaty and happy and warm". A nice coffee break, some chickenwings and hot sauce, and maybe a gba game marathon right after.... Nothing like nice eats and drinks and games to get me back on track of hacking another game.

I know, I'm bizzare.

I've touched a few things with it, but that's about it. I wish I could knew more about it. I've spent more time playing around with FF6's events (read: a couple hours), so I'll be of no help there. The only thing I've been able to contribute thus far has been Chrono Tweaker, and yeah, it's on temporary ice. Been kinda busy with real life and other projects to be fiddling around with CT lately. Maybe I'll give it a go in a few more months. Who knows? Thanks for the compliment Lenophis, I appreciate it.
It's not forgotten, just not important right now.

It's not that I know tons about the game, I've just fiddled with what's publicly available.
I'd love to play a CT hack though, text only changes are so....bleh. Not that I wouldn't play a new text only hack, if it were well done.

I'd like to see some more graphics hacks out. I converted the imps into moogles, which was pretty cool, so I know it's very possible with a little effort.

I wish I still had my "Kill Marle" hack, I'd release it for everyone to play around with.
Stuff like that is easy to do, copy all Marle's graphics, compress them, place them over another monster's graphics, point all of the replaced monster's "stuff" to that of Marle's and tweak a few things, and boom. Evil Dopleganger hack.

There's tons of information available, a few editors out, a great SNES9X tracer to use if more data needs to be found, the decompression in the game is not a problem, as Evil Peer's Sprite Viewer program decompresses, views, recompresses the graphics with the greatest of ease.... way more than enough to make a decent hack of the game. If you want a hack of the game out, a little elbow grease goes a long way. Make one.

Is it the only type of CT hack you can make? Try something that you don't think is pointless. Make all the enemies harder, and make a hard-type hack. Change some of the graphics and text and make a (tasteful) parody hack. Leet may be pointless, but I'm sure that's not the extent of your abilities.

If you are too lazy to click a few links, read a few threads, or scroll your mouse down a page or two, then you, my friend, are in sad SAD shape. It's not like your going to get arthritus from all that clicking, gosh, it may even take you all of 10 minutes or more to find what your looking for, but if that's the only inconvenience to you...

If you can't help yourself, then others aren't going to be able to help you either.
