| What almost bugs me more is that at my apartment they have lots of people from all over the world (who no speak English) and when our fire alarm sounds I'll be outside and some people will just stare at you from their rooms on the 10th floor or whatever, dumbfounded. One time we had an actual fire but it wasn't serious. Really pisses me off at how stupid people can be. Loud noise = get the hell out. Need to figure out how to write that in Korean. | I believe someone mentioned this at some point, but I can't seem to find where, but the previewing of posts (and signatures) does not correspond to the html generated. My sig was causing me problems earlier by adding extra spaces. I looked, and saw that there had been extra break tags inserted for where in edit layout I had used carriage returns. Now I'm not a fool, so I went in and manually entered the html and everything became fine again. But when I went back to edit layout (b/c I suspected that was the problem) only the raw text of the layout loaded. i.e. there was no html. Just my sig with carriage returns. Saving that layout I figured would create this mess again. So I hit save layout and went to try to post in a thread. I previewed my post with my signature, and everything appeared fine. So I didn't post, I was just trying to preview my sig. I even sent myself a pm to see if the sig spaced out funny. Hmm nothing odd. Then I went to edit my post in Craziness about the Grid Game. If was spaced fine before I edited, but when I hit "edit post" it became doubled spaced. I just confirmed this on several of my posts. | B/c miles are longer, and therefore kickass. Kilometer is a weeny measure. I'm sorry but I cannot hide my feelings on this issue. 1000 kilometers is a megameter, but that's only about 500 miles. I've probably rated at least 300 users or more. | Well I'm pretty sure the problem is that in edit layout when your sig is saved the html is stripped. Then when you use edit post some buggy method of introducing breaks is used. Notice that in the custom title the actual html is preserved when you go to save it. edit: wait, scratch that. I just altered my sig again in editlayout.php and the html is saved. It's just if you enter nothing but text in editlayout.php for your sig, the carriage returns will be borked when you go to use edit post. | If you look at any closed system on its corners, it resembles a 2X2, so after a finite number of steps the outer corner will no longer be a contributor to the system, which reduces it to a smaller closed system. So I guess the answer is no, there is no confinguaration providing an infinite chain in this game. (For anyone who actually cares :p) And unless you're a genius it is blind luck I suppose. |

Question: If you go to websites and look for partial sums of integers, squares, cubes, etc. you will find induction proofs verifying that the formulas they give are true. But I have yet to see a website that gives the derivation of these formulas. In fact, for even powers this is not exactly trivial. I invite anyone to try a proof of this: sum of the first n squares of integers = 12 + 22 + ... + n2 = n(n-1)(2n-1)/6 derive the formula directly. the proof of 1 + 2 + ... + n = n(n+1)/2 is fairly straightforward. take n + (n-1) + (n-2) + ... + (n-(n-1)) + (n-(n-0)) as a reformulation of the sequence. That breaks down to (n+1) terms of n, i.e. n(n+1), minus the nth sum of integers = the nth sum of integers. notationally: sum(1,n) = n(n+1) - sum(1,n) Then 2sum(1,n) = n(n+1) which reduces to sum(1,n) = n(n+1)/2 Don't try a derivation of this kind for squares, you'll get no where. You need to be sneakier. Then, if you want, apply this to sum(14,n4), the same kind of proof applies, just more complicated. The sum of odd powers can be found from the sums of all lower powers, so it depends upon even powers. *Predicts that Mutation will come in and say *head explodes**

ok, so maybe it's a bad joke, sorry. Actually I've been pretty miserable too. Given that most of my best friends are also friends with my [edit: EX]gf, I've been staying away from most of them so she can have time to sort it out. So I've been quite annoyed with being so antisocial lately. It's hard making new friends when it's your last semester at college and you know any ties you make are probably going to be weakened once you move away. So yeah, not looking for a new gf, not looking for new friends. Either way, rejection is a terrible feeling, and you just need time to heal and lick your wounds. Good luck.
