Well, I'd been asked to update on the whole Hypnosis thing, and I think I'd like to get my thoughts off my chest about it too, so... As some of you know, today I went to a hypnotherapy appointment and went under Hypnosis for the first time. It was interesting, and I was quite (read VERY) nervous. In fact, because I was so nervous and tense, I now have a mildly sore shoulder, it was still tense when I was under hypnosis. The whole thing is rather strange really. You are awake and conscious the whole time, you can hear what's around you and everything, you just can't react to it like you normally can. He does tell you you're feeling sleepy, but you don't sleep... your eyes just get heavy. I giggled when I found my eyelids getting heavy and then closing... I didn't do it, it just happened. ![]() What the hypnotist does is bring your subconscious mind to the fore, and your subconscious controls things. Your conscious mind is still there, but more as an observer than anything else. It watches (okay, not quite, your eyes are closed) the whole thing but it can't really participate. It is a really odd sensation sitting there and feeling like you have little or no control over your body. One of the first things he did was get me to raise my right arm, for example, to show when I had entered the hypnotic state. I didn't move my arm, but it still moved.... well, I didn't CONSCIOUSLY move my arm, but my subconscious did. Same with my left arm later. The weirdest bit was when I was asked to consciously LOWER my left arm, and I had quite a bit of trouble doing so. It didn't seem to want to respond to the command... I had to FORCE my left arm to lower! Same with my right arm when I was told to do so! He also got me to imagine my depression as a yellow blob, which I had to push out of my body. I kinda thought that was really weird, but when I "woke" I was told that I had "gotten rid of the depression" doing that and that it "won't come back; unless something makes it come back". Course, he said it like it will, for at least a little while anyways -- he says that further sessions will get rid of it pretty much entirely and I'll do that every time I'm under hypnosis. strangely, I haven't really felt depressed since.... I have no idea how long I was under hypnosis for, time didn't really seem to be too much of a factor, but when I came out, I felt a little like I'd been asleep or something, a little hazy in the head and such. My shoulder was sore too, but then that's probably because when everything else relaxed during the hypnosis, the tension remained in my shoulder. All in all, a very strange experience, and quite possibly the answer to my prayers. We'll see...

It IS weird having your arm move without you trying to move it. But I wouldn't call it frightening. As for there being "two people" or somesuch, it's not really like that. Your subconscious mind controls 97% of the things you do. An Auto-Pilot of some sorts, your subconscious mind is in charge of things like tying your shoes and driving and all those other things you don't think about when your're doing them. It also holds your thoughts about yourself based around your environment. My environment (the people around me, the way I have been treated by others, etc) has contributed greatly to my subconscious thinking I'm useless, etc, and killing my whole self esteem. 23 years of having no self esteem led to me being depressed. Because of my environment, the way other people treat me, etc, I could be no other way. With all the things that have happened in my life, and with the way that I have been treated by others for as long as I can remember, I could be... no other way. I am depressed and I have low self esteem because my environment has created me that way. The work that happens under hypnosis (after the yellow blob thing) was to change the way my suconscious feels about me. At the moment it thinks I'm useless. We (the hypnotist and I) need to work on making my subconscious believe that I am not useless.

Well, different people have different experiences with braces. I had braces for a few years. They can be a little painful when you get them on, but you get used to it. Just eat something soft for a while. They can also be a little sore when they are adjusted by the orthodontist; but that usually doesn't last too long. The worst part is when they are first put on, and it's not exactly ever an intense pain, it's more a dull ache than anything, and I found I only really ever felt it when I ate something anyways. The metal on your teeth CAN create ulcers and cuts on your lips, although not everybody has this problem. If you do, it's more likely to happen when you are still "new" to having braces, and then your lips toughen up a little more and it doesn't happen so much. The rubber bands are interesting, I still have hundreds of the little things around somewhere too. I found it odd when one of them would snap all of a sudden when I was talking and go flying out of my mouth... thankfully everybody understood it wasn't my fault and were pretty understanding of that, so it wasn't real embarassing. For all the discomfort and such, remember that it is only temporary. Sure, it might seem like forever when you have them on, but your braces will come off in time. And when they do, you will be so glad. When they come off, you realise that you have beautiful teeth and a gorgeous smile. And everybody compliments you on it, and you realise that it was all worth the hassle ![]()

I don't mind the dentist, or the doctor for that matter. Several years of frequent visits to an orthodontist must've gotten me used to it. Sure, it's a little uncomfortable having somebody's fingers in your mouth, but I'm used to it, it's not painful or anything. And my teeth are in good condition. What I AM worried about is the soreness at the back of my mouth... I think I may have Wisdom Teeth coming through....

If your gums bleed when the dentist cleans them, then you haven't been taking good enough care of your teeth. I know, because I get told off too, but my dentist takes the time to explain it a little better than "see the blood, that's not good". Healthy gums don't bleed easily at all. Mine bleed a little though, because I have a tender spot that I avoid when I brush because it hurts, and the dentist tells me I need to brush that bit better; but I... don't.. cause it hurts. I gotta remember to keep brushing my gums. You're meant to actually massage your gums with the brush a little, and I don't like doing it much, so I don't do it enough....

Some are simply after your money, that's true, but thankfully I've never encountered one like that. Admittedly, I thought a little that way when I was told I needed braces, but looking back at things, my mouth WAS dangerously overcrowded and my teeth were quite badly crooked, and I think in the end it was better that I had braces. And both the dentist and orthodontist have always known that my family and I have never had a lot of money (My father was sick all my life, a lot of our money went into paying his medical stuff, and with him not working, we were living purely on my mother's income) and they gave us exceptional pricing and stuff. Where my braces should've cost thousands and thousands, they did not... Some dentists may be out there for money, but others genuinely care about the health of their customers and the needs of their customers and will help you. Mine does.

Almost sounds like your AV is overreacting to a cookie or something. When you say it's name was "Trojan" was there any other description. Usually it's "backdoor.trojan" or something like that as a name. Trojan is a very generic title and can refer to spyware, adware, cookies or other "malware" in some cases. Acmlm's board gives you a Cookie when you visit, but that is merely a login cookie. If you want better control of where you get cookies and things from, might I suggest using Mozilla Firefox and playing with the Cookie settings ![]()

Yeah, you're meant to be pretty brutal with the flossing too. I don't do mine till they bleed, but I'm pretty thorough. I think my gums are relatively tough, except for one spot, which I mentioned... which I really should work on, despite it being a little tender. Ideally you're meant to brush your teeth for five minutes every day, making sure to massage the gums with the brush as well as brushing the teeth themselves. I brush my tongue, but that's cause it gets rid of 70% of the bacteria that grows in your mouth while you sleep, so you don't HAVE to do that, it just helps with your breath. Then you're meant to floss pretty thoroughly and finish it up with mouthwash! Course, I wonder how many people don't brush at all, or only brush a little bit and not well. I HAD to be very good with my teeth when I had braces, and I still am pretty good with mine. My teeth and gums are pretty healthy (except for that sore spot) and I don't have any fillings or other work on my teeth. The only thing out of the ordinary is a slightly sore spot on my gum where I had a cut once that is a bit weird still, and slight pain at the back of my mouth where Wisdom Teeth are coming through. My Mum's REALLY good with her brushing, but she's almost TOO good... she's worn down some of the enamel on a few of her teeth with her over-vigilant brushing.

Actually, I never understood why little kids have braces, generally most people get them in their early teens when the dentist/orthodontist has a better idea of how things are gonna be. I remember recently the act of giving kids braces coming under fire from a health authority here because there were a lot of people who had braces who didn't need them. Me however, I needed them. My teeth were crooked, the baby teeth hadn't come out properly (or at all in some cases) and so my mouth was overcrowded, and my adult teeth were growing in HORRIBLY crooked. I had an overbite too. Now I have a lovely smile And I have the braces to thank, if I didn't have them, I'd have all sorts of crooked teeth ![]()

Nooooo!! Do NOT get Lindows! Lindows is okay, I guess, but it poses the same security kinda problems that Windows does in some respect. A part of the security aspect of Linux is that you do not run as Root (the closest thing I think in Windows is "Administrator") which helps to keep your machine nice and safe and secure and happy and such ![]() But, like Windows, Lindows allows you to run as Root, causing the same kinds of security problems that Windows has to some extent. People have been having problems with it. Sure, it's easy for "newbies" to use the system, but it's also easy for those same newbies to stuff up the system!! ![]() I suggest getting Knoppix/Gnoppix first -- they are Live-CD distributions of Linux (meaning you can run them straight from the CD without installing anything) based on Debian GNU/Linux. Knoppix has a KDE interface, Gnoppix has a Gnome interface (I like Gnome!). You can use Knoppix/Gnoppix to get a little look at Linux before you go the whole hog and install it. You can also play Frozen Bubble! (my FAVOURITE Linux game! YAAAAAAY!) If you are gonna go the whole hog, I recommend Fedora Core 1 (Not Red Hat, the newer Fedora is better) ![]() Hope that helps

Ugh, well, it's that time of the day again -- inbox checking time. That fun part of the day where I get all those exciting offers to enlarge an organ that I DON'T HAVE! I've noticed that I get quite a lot of spam lately, so I've been creating custom filters to get rid of it and viruses and stuff too. ![]() Anyways, I was just wondering, how much spam do you guys get daily, and what, if anything, are you doing to minimize the impact spam has on your life/inbox? I get between 30 - 50 a day, and I'm starting to create custom filters to eliminate mine. You?

| See, I've only gotten spam on my account very recently. But I also heard that spammers have been targeting domains recently; and my mail is on my own domain, so.. *shrugs* I'm always amused by the things the spammers use to try to get past the filtering. Bizarre stuff. Mispellings, almost talking in L33t half the time, REALLY odd words in it. And what is with half the spam ending with a collection of very strange random words? | I think the BEST way to get rid of it is if we all just filter it out and ignore it. Spammers send out MILLIONS of e-mails, and they get 1% response rate. That's a LOT of people giving the spammers money for their penis enlargement pills and such. Spammers spam because it is profitable. For little to no advertising costs they get a lot of stupid customers. If they didn't have customers, they'd go away. |

Yeah, a lot of people take revenge via snail mail. They find out the guy's real address and send so much snail mail his way that he can't find his legitimate mail amongst it all. I just want somebody to beat a few spammers within an inch of their lives with a pointy stick. That might make a few others think twice! Bleh, and I've also blocked out attachments from my mail. At least, the .scr, .pif, .exe, .bat ones. I left .zip, but most my virus generated spam gets sent to the trash that way.
