Yes, they are replacable, and they cost around $30 Australian....but I'm guessing you won't want Australian pricing.. so I'll just say that they're replacable and inexpensive.

Arwon is absolutely correct. I've watched some of the things on sites like blackboxvoting well before the election and I was rather horrified at the way the diebold machines were being handled. The current problems come as absolutely no surprise to me -- I anticipated them.

I know full well that Bush won, I know that Kerry conceded. THAT is actually no longer the issue.

The issue is the security and lack of accuracy of voting machines. There have been concerns right up to the elections

REGARDLESS of the result, this needs to be looked at, this needs to be all audited. This needs to be audited and things need to be sorted out SO IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN.

EVERY vote should count, and every vote should count as exactly the same as what the voter ACTUALLY voted for.

If it isn't, like Arwon said, then the voting systems, elections, are all a sham, a joke.

Hmmm, interesting, but I like that it does the edit thing.

That way, I also see if somebody else edits my post, and I really do like to know when that happens, and hopefully why...

Actually, we probably would be reading this either way. As I tried to point out with the links I posted, this has been a concern for a very long time. I've been hearing about faults in evoting, diebold machines, etc for a very very long time, in countries besides the US as well.

I doubt the concerns over the accuracy of the voting machines would've just fizzled out because Kerry won.

It's not conspiracy theory (although I'm sure the tinfoil hat crowd are lapping it up). The problems with voting machines are real. If they weren't real, then Governments wouldn't have rejected e-voting on the basis of these problems.

A lot of the faults in this election wouldn't have swung things, but that's not the point -- the point is that there shouldn't be faults in the first place.

Actually, I was talking more about the faults than anything else.

Although that also brings up the security issues. The diebold machines' security and accuracy has also been being discussed for months and months leading up to the election. Black Box Voting at one stage said that a number of the machines were unpatched Windows computers, and insecure to the point that any individual that knew the phone number attached to the PC could've modified votes without even authenticating.

If that really is the case, they should be looking at making things more secure. On the assumption that Black Box Voting were telling the truth, then that means that ANYBODY in the world -- even Osama bin Laden -- would've been able to modify votes. Even assuming that nobody did modify votes, that security hole needs to be patched, and methods need to be taken to secure those machines.

Australia's voting machines are electronic, and the software used to run them is Open Source. We don't seem to be having as much trouble as the closed, proprietary diebold systems had in terms of security or accuracy.

Yes, but generally, $30 is the average. Unless you require a power supply with more juice, or a proprietary one, but for the vast, vast majority, the AU$30 one is good enough.

Just don't buy an LCS one, they work fine for a while, then the capacitors overheat and they blow and make a really bad smell.

And don't go to a company like Compaq unless you really really have to. They WILL charge you more than what it's worth.

Probably.

Still, this stuff was bought up well before the election, in nations besides the US too. Other nations have had problems, and others have rejected evoting entirely. So there is substance to this.

Sure, just because this stuff is perfect Conspiracy Theory fodder, doesn't mean we shouldn't take it seriously and make sure that problems don't occur in the future...

I vote for Firefox, Mozilla, Konqueror, Opera, Safari, et all.

I do NOT vote for IE, Crazy Browser, Avant Browser, etc.

My reasons are simply SECURITY. I work in IT, and I clean up the mess that IE (and IE based browsers) make pretty much daily. At first my thoughts were more or less just "spyware sucks, run adaware", but I started recommending my clients use Firefox/Opera etc over a year ago, and I discovered that the users I converted to alternate browsers STOPPED CALLING ME EVERY TWO MONTHS TO CLEAN UP THEIR MACHINE! YAAAAAY!!

So now I tend to recommend that people use browsers other than IE whenever they can, and use IE only when they absolutely have to -- or face the alternative of cleaning up their PC frequently.

Out of the alternate browsers, I like and use Firefox.

Just to try to clarify the big difference in the ideas behind Opera and Firefox....

Opera is a fully featured browser, out of the box. It tries to have all the features you need already in it. In that respect, Opera is more like Mozilla.

Firefox is a very stripped down browser. Out of the box, it has fairly limited features, and you can add whatever you want on with Extensions -- like like some kind of software lego set.

I like Firefox for that reason, but I know that it's why Opera users generally LOATHE Firefox too They don't want to add features -- they want them to be already there.

IE on the other hand, is even more stripped-bare than Firefox, and yet somehow... so much more bloated too.

Mozilla has been around for ages, it grew out of the ashes of Netscape, and shares a lot of the original code.

Firefox on the other hand was completely rebuilt from the ground up to be smaller, faster, etc, etc.

Firefox has less features built in by default, and has been completely rewritten from scratch.

I know it was originally forked, but I thought I'd also read that in order to achieve their goal of a fast small browser, they did have to start from scratch, or pretty damned close to.

May I ask, what exactly made this happen?

I must admit, I'm rather surprised.

Thanks for the explanation, Jesper.

While I agree that Erk did not do well in his role as administrator (I personally found he could've handled the role with more integrity and class), I don't think it's exactly fair to have a mass Erk-bashing thread either.

I agree with a lot of the stuff said in this thread. In fact, I agree with a great deal of it, and I do not believe that Erk was well suited to the role of Administration at Acmlm's Board.

HOWEVER, I also think that Erk did make a lot of valuable contributions to the board, and I don't think he deserves this kind of treatment either.

I'd like to thank Erk for hosting the board.

And I'd like to hope that Erk steps down from his role gracefully, and understands why this happened. I hope that despite how things were handled, that there will be no hard feelings.

Well, I run a Mac, but I have an Administrative account -- however, when I try to install anything that changes system files, it will ask for a password

At work, I run as Admin, and I don't get a choice in the matter.

That picture have a white backround on IE, in Firefox it goes against the backround nicely. (Tarale, I hope you really don't mind about me using your minipic as an example. )

And this is a classical test, which Firefox passes competly.

Even worser full PNG support have been promised in IE for very long time, yet it hadn't been added.

I have no problem with you using my minipic

It should look good in Opera too if I remember correctly. It's just IE that won't like it, and I've decided I'm no longer going to make any effort to cater to IE. (If it works in IE, it's good, I'm just no longer going to go out of my way, it's too much effort)

My account at work is fun. They change something on the network, and I lose all administrative priveledges to the local machine, then applications break!

I find it slow on my Mac, but it's okay in Windows.

Course, I am now running an older version, and I do get tons of spam, so I'm guessing neither of those help.

I... am rather caffeinated lately.

I've been getting up really early for work, and I have been taking additional caffeine to try to cope with it.

I've tried a few different things to caffeinate myself up, and yesterday I got some caffeinated mints sent from ThinkGeek. (I got Jo Mints and Penguin Mints).

I'm enjoying those, but there's nothing quite like a good coffee. Coffee is still my favorite method of caffeinating my blood stream. However, first thing in the morning, when I NEED caffeine, my belly is too sensitive for me to drink a coffee, so I'm finding that slipping a Jo Mint under my tongue is REALLY good too.

Oh, and I love my Red Bull.

What's your favorite way of caffeinating yourself?
