| WinAmp may be continued to be used for a while, but it seems unlikely that it will get any more updates to it. There's unlikely to be a new version, which is sad. I like WinAmp. I have WinAmp 5 at home. |

| In a recent thread, Xkeeper bought up something that made me start thinking. He said that the buttons at the bottom of the board look cluttered. Looking at them, I have to agree -- there are five buttons, and they do look a little untidy. I thought a little about how to tidy it up, and realised that there isn't a single button that is the same size as the another. There is 1 standard button (the Big Boards one) and all the rest are nonstandard sizes. I wondered, if it would maybe look neater if we made all the buttons the Standard button size. So... I kinda took the initiative and created some buttons, just three of them at the moment, to try to tidy up the bottom of the board.
I tried to make the Powered By one as close as possible to the original, although with a few changes so that it would be easy to read in that size. I understand that the original prolly has a fair whack of sentimental value to most people here, so I've tried to stay true to its design. The Hosted By one I also tried to keep fairly close as far as colors went, but did make a few changes. I didn't know what to do with the Donate one. I was wondering, would it be possible to consider replacing the current large buttons with smaller ones (not necessarily the ones I created, perhaps have a competition to see who can create the best, or something). I think it would go a long way towards making the bottom of the board look a lot neater. Thoughts? (edited by Tarale on 11-12-04 10:12 PM) |

Really?Eh, I see a HUGE difference I also see that I didn't make the Powered By button dark enough.Eh, I'm not exactly real worried about it, it's just that I thought that Xkeeper did make a good point, and I don't think it would hurt to make it a little neater and more aesthetically pleasing. And as I am bored and haven't made 31x88 buttons in a loooong time, I thought I'd play and see if I could come up with an example. I kinda like the idea of having a competition to design the buttons, just for fun. I'm sure people can make better ones than the ones I did. |

Do you have anything to actually add to this discussion other than make mildly veiled slurs on my character? I asked for thoughts on the IDEA of making the buttons unformly sized. | You misunderstood me. You insulted me, not the idea. That is what upset me. If you don't like the idea, that's fine, and that's your prerogative. But please don't express your dislike of the idea in a way that expresses personal criticism, not technical criticism. That's what I mean. If you don't like the idea, by all means, that is fine. This statement implies that I (and anybody else who would bring this up) am being anal. While this was very subtle, I still picked up on it, and was mildly offended. That implication wasn't really necessary.
This was more direct, less subtle. Again, you imply that I am obsessive. My point is that neither of these were necessary. You might think that you were being funny perhaps, and not insulting, but I felt insulted. All in all, it gives me the impression that you were not taking the suggestion seriously because you believe that the person suggesting it is anal and obsessive. And I'd like to think that you had more valid reasons than that. I'd like to hear reasons like: * The staff are already very busy at the moment * The original Powered By... button has sentimental value, we don't want to replace it * Those buttons are too small * A competition would be a lot of hassle to organise etc Not: * It doesn't matter, only obsessive people see these things. Look, I didn't mean to upset anybody by posting this, I just had a suggestion, that's all. If nobody likes it, that's fine, but I'd rather hear more valid reasons why. |

| Something that's pointless to you, may not be to somebody else. I just tend to believe that if something is worth doing at all (ie, having banners there), it's worth doing properly, that's all. The idea probably is pointless, but then if I really think about it, so's posting on this board at all, really. A lot of the shit I do in my life is pointless, and isn't meant to have a point either. | The Firefox thing is prolly there as part of the Spread Firefox campaign -- it encourages you to put a Firefox banner on your website. I do admire the Firefox community, and how quickly it has sprung up -- and gained so much enthusiasm. Firefox buttons are part advertising, part little badges of honor, the same way Trekkies wear Trekkie badges (at least, the Trekkies I know) As for the "template" thing, I did use the same base for two of the buttons -- because both the originals have scanlines and rounded corners too. So I figured why make more work for myself when I can just use the base for one and change the hue. I had no idea what to do with the donate one, so I didn't do much at all. It did help me find a font I forgot I had though -- Reservoir Grunge I.. don't really mind if the Firefox banner is there or not, but I know that there are a few users starting to get sick of having Firefox in their face everywhere. I know XKeeper also mentioned removing the Donate Button, as he said it was for IRC anyways, and not relevant anymore or something, but I don't know anything about that, so don't quote me on that. .... I guess all I want is for whatever banners that are there to look neat and tidy. And shiny. I like shinies. |
