Yeah, I think Germany requires people to do military service. I remember meeting a German man who said that they didn't want to do it, but they did and they feel that they are a better person because of it.

His girlfriend does the stuff too, and doesn't seem real approachable either unless you're my brother. Doesn't seem to want anything to do with us (ie, his family) or his friends, is only interested in talking to my brother.

I've never liked Transformers, to the point that I used to avoid it as a child. I remember disliking it back in the 80's.

Course, it's prolly that I'm also a girl, and Transformers was a little too boy-ish for me. Voltron however was all good, cause it had a PRINCESS and she wore PINK!

Ah, Robotech. I vaguely remember that, but I think I was too young to "get" it at the time. Course, I prolly didn't really "get" Voltron either (just like I don't think my cousins "get" DBZ, they just like the fighting and find all other bits boring).

But as for Transformers, I think it's definitely cause I was a little girl, and Transformers was basically very... not little girlish.

My brother loved it though

But those were GOOD animes, and we're discussing teh bad ones.

Eh, which reminds me, I'm avoiding the new Astro Boy. I remember the original when I was little, I fear that the new one is going to destroy childhood memory.

I didn't "get" Akira the first time I watched it, but now I've seen it a few times, I get it. The Japanese audience would've gotten it having had the advantage of reading the Manga.

Of course, Akira is one of the very very few animes in which the lips actually synch with the voice acting, and for that reason, Akira was very expensive to make. At the time, it had unsurpassed visual effects and up until very recently was still the most expensive anime made.

AND they did a good job with the story, considering the complexity of the original Akira manga.

Apparently Konfabulator, a program that allows you to put "widgets" on your desktop with things like time, weather, etc, will be coming to Windows (I thought Stardock's Object Desktop did the same thing, but anyways)

Although apparently Longhorn's Sidebar will do a lot of what Konfabulator is currently doing, is anybody on Windows interested in a Konfabulator type program?

Also, the next version of OS X (Tiger) will have Dashboard, which is also Konfabulator-like. There is some speculation that Apple are stealing Konfabulator's idea -- however mini "Widget" style applications have been available on Macintoshes since 1984, so maybe it's Konfabulator stealing Apple's idea!

Does anybody here with OS X use Konfabulator? Would anybody in Windows be interested in using sonething like it?

For a screenie of Konfabulator (on my desktop), look here:
Konfabulator on OS X
I am using the following Widgets: Mini weather, AirPort Signal, Mini Digital Clock and CPU Portal.

Yeah, I've heard KDE has stuff like that too. Konfabulator's okay, it reminds me a bit of the old stuff on the Original Mac, but shinier. I remember there was a sliding puzzle on the original Mac that I liked.

So far, I like my weather widget the best

Not sure about Stardock's thingie, but Konfabulator sits above applications if I want it to.

My weather thing shows partially above Firefox. It says it's 10 degrees celsius..

I think you can stick things to the desktop, or have them float, or have them above applications

Konfabulator is not spyware, and as far as I know, neither is Stardock's program.

But there ARE plenty of spyware things out there.... just this isn't one of them.

You are a sexist bastard, Vampirel. That's MY opinion.

You've insulted me and cast a slur on all female kind by inferring that we're all a bunch of whores with your statement.

There is NO difference between a man sleeping around and a woman sleeping around. NONE WHATSOEVER.

The belief that a woman that does it is a slut (wheras a man is a hero) is just an outdated, sexist opinion.

Let me guess, so the fact that I've been raped, and had sex with three other men (two long term relationships, one one-night-stand) puts me in the category of WHORE, doesn't it, Vampirel?

A man in the same situation is just a victim of bad luck, failed relationships, and for the one night stand: a fucking hero. Right?

That's fine if you believe that sex is something that should be saved for marriage.

But don't put it across in a way that makes it sound like the females that have sex are more evil than the males that do.

I believe that sex is... what you want sex to be. I'd like to think that it's best in a relationship with somebody you love, and that is what I want out of sex, but I also understand that sex means different things to different people, and I don't think it's my right to judge anybody based on their sexual habits.

It's not my place to judge somebody because they sleep with lots of people, or don't sleep with anybody, are a virgin, have sex with people for money, or gay, or bi, or into catgirls, S&M, dressing up in tight leather, or fantasizing over imaginary characters from videogames. That's their decision, it doesn't hurt me, so it's not my place to condemn them.

I do like to think though that people are making these decisions for the right reasons (ie, that's what they REALLY want to do). If they are doing something for the wrong reasons (ie, revenge, to be cool (sadly common at high school age), to forget something else), it's not going to be very good for them, in fact it will be downright destructive.

I hope that Lord Rahl's friend is doing this for the right reasons, and not for the wrong ones. And I hope if it is for the wrong reasons, that Lord Rahl is able to help her out with this.

The thing with reasons is that it's often hard to work out if they are the right ones or the wrong ones.

You need to work out your friend's motivation on this. Is she actually doing this cause she has a big sex drive and is merely horny?

Or is all this sex just filling in for something else, ie, geniune affection?

Short answer to off topic question: Yes. You are still a virgin. Mrs Palmer and her 5 slender daughters do not count.

But yeah, some people do sleep around in an attempt to fill a kinda hole in their lives.

I had a one night stand a long, long time ago. At the time, I was lonely and felt like no man would be attracted to me. I used another human being in order to try to squash those feelings, and I put a face on it that I was having "fun". It wasn't, and I regret it to this day.

Of course, the alcohol I had consumed at the time didn't help matters when it came to this "brilliant" idea.

It was a stupid idea, but there you have it. Everybody has these moments of "brilliance" and I learned from mine. I'm glad I learned from it, and didn't repeat it, cause I'm sure that if I had, I'd feel a lot worse than just the occasional mild pang of regret and shame.

I hope your friend is not making a mistake, and I hope that if she is, she learns from it before it gets bad

Once again, Bush has stood by his rejection of the Kyoto Treaty. His basis for this having been jobs.

President Bush strongly opposes any treaty or policy that would cause the loss of a single American job, let alone the nearly 5 million jobs Kyoto would have cost,' said James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Personally, I don't think that supporting the treaty would lose jobs -- in fact, it could create some jobs, as companies would need to hire some more people to tackle the problem of greenhouse emissions.

At the very least, I think this "it's either the environment, or jobs" thing is a false dichotomy.

I would like to see the US ratify the Kyoto Treaty, myself.

Your thoughts?

I vote that the US at least show some kind of willingness to cut down greenhouse gas emissions. If just cause I don't want to live in a fucked up world cause one really big country isn't playing fair as far as taking care of the planet goes.

Screw the short term "jobs".

I vote for the long term world not being borked option.

Although frankly, I don't see how this is mutually exclusive either. I don't see how having jobs has to equal environment fuckover, and vice versa.

Okay, the US says that if they support the Kyoto Treaty (and cut down Greenhouse Gas Emissions) that their people will lose a HUGE amount of jobs.

I don't think that it necessarily needs to be the case. I don't think that "helping the environment" and "having jobs' are two things that can't possibly coexist.

However, in the unlikely event that it is like that, I personally would rather see the United States support the Kyoto Treaty, and risk losing some jobs. People bounce back from that kind of thing -- but who knows what kind of damage we are doing in the meantime with the Greenhouse Gases.

So the world's temperatrure has raised maybe 1 degree Celcius all over.... most people probably don't think that's much. But frankly, I can't even begin to think how much energy it must take to raise the temperature of a whole planet by as much as 1 degree!

If there's something that can be done about things like that, I'd like to see the US, and all governments around the world, doing their best

I'd rather shell out my hard earned for an application I really need, but I gota admit with some of the larger ones, it's not really easy.

With a lot of smaller apps, they need to start releasing less crippled trial versions, and then maybe I wouldn't resort to cracks to see if the program has any potential.

It can only PARTIALLY do it. Again, this isn't limited to your Desktop only, I can float widgets or stick them on top of applications too. (I just didn't post a screenshot of that, cause then I'd need to show you my applications...)

As for the slow speed, I find Konfabulator fine on my Mac, but it did have one REALLY scary crash that I didn't like.
