From that one screenshot, it just looks like SMB1 with different colors and more enemies.

And I never thought a dark atmosphere really worked with Mario games, unless you just do it for a few levels only... If you changed the graphics (turning Mario into someone else etc), then a dark theme may be more... "credible" ? But then, the happy Mario music wouldn't work anymore, so it may have to be basically left out or something... *shrugs*
