Hello! I am AP, or "Anonymous Person". My interests include hacking SMB, which I have done for about a year. I have visited this board as a guest for many months now, but I finally registered last night ! This is the first time I registered at a board! Also, I would like to be a great member of Acmlm

To introduce myself, I am AP (or Anonymous Person) and have hacked SMB for more than a year. So I'm not really a ROM hacking newbie.

Anyway, to be back on topic, I finished my mini SMB hack called SMB All-Star Levels. This is the 3rd SMB hack I released since I opened my site. Some of the new features in this hack include:

- Graphics from SMB2j, SMB2, SMB3, and SMW
- Levels are recreations of levels in other games
- New enemies, including zombies, Metroids, Snifits, Cheep-Cheeps from vases (replacements for pipes), and more
- Mapper added (CNROM/Mapper #3 to be exact) for animation with bank-switching
- Mega Mario Suit replacing Fire Mario
- Turtles, zombies, and Mini Wrenches getting faster after coming out from their shells/being temporarily knocked out

(Check out this page at http://www.filefarmer.com/smbhacks/allstar.shtml for more info.)

Here are some screenshots of my hack:

Download my hack here:
http://www.filefarmer.com/smbhacks/allstar.zip

Edit: D'oh! Forgot to say this: patch the ROM to a 41,488 byte trained ROM, not a 40,976! To add a trainer, add 512 bytes (all of them should be 00) after the header and change ROm address 6 to 31. Do this to your ROM and patch it again. Or you could just patch the file in this: http://www.filefarmer.com/smbhacks/primarytrainer.zip and then patch the hack.

Wow! This is simply amazing. This is a truly wonderful piece of work! I played Japanese hacks with changed music, but changing the music engine.... You may have made a revolutionary step in ROM hacking and SMB hacking! I might use this in a future hack of mine despite the fact that the sound effects are messed up. Keep up the good work!

Sorry about making the trainer thing very confusing. Let me try to explain it better.

The trainer kinda gives more space (512 more bytes to be exact) for the ROM. The trainer uses RAM addresses $7000-$7FFF. I used the trainer as extra space for the hack. Technically, the original ROM starts out much smaller than the hack. You can download a patch that automatically installs the trainer at http://www.filefarmer.com/smbhacks/primarytrainer.zip. Apply that patch to the original ROM. After doing this, THEN patch the IPS of the hack. The IPS of the hack was created using the already trained ROM as the "unmodified" ROM in the process of creating the IPS. I didn't use the original ROM because if I did, the IPS might have some of the game's original code. I hope you can understand this now. If you managed to play the hack, please post any comments, reviews, or criticism.

I think this might have to do with the Bowser at 1-1 or your emulator. Use FCEU 0.5 or FCEUXD and try to beat 1-1 again. If you encounter the problem again, it might be Bowser. I encountered this problem myself when I tested it in SMB Utlitiy, but the cause could have beem the emulator. Everybody please play this hack with FCEU 0.5 or FCEUXD. If you still encounter this problem while using these emulators, post about it, PM me, or email me.

I can't reach him.

Hmmm, maybe you mean he's jumping. Bowser is supposed to jump like the Bowser in the original SMB. To pass him, you need to try to use the note block.

Use the note block to jump over Bowser. Try to find some hidden blocks, too.

I chose the "don't worry Googie" option. I don't think ROM hacking will die very soon. Maybe in 10 years or so. There are still many hacks made nowadays.

Edit: I don't even think ROM hacking itself is dying right now.

If that's what you call a slow period, you have unreasonable expectations. It seems like there's a post on here about a new hack in progress and a new hack release at least once a week. Considering the length of time it takes to make a hack, that's damn good.

EDIT:

I mean serously -- did you guys somehow miss this thread?

Actually, I agree. ROM hacking isn't really slow right now. I just chose the don't worry (slow pace) option because I was thinking that was the one most close to my opinion. Googie, the people you talked on AIM probably don't visit this forum a lot to notice that ROM hacking is still active. I think ROM hacking won't die in a long time. Interesting discussion to put up, though.

I'd love to see this made into a bigger game, with more levels.

Thank you Shadic for the comments. I'm making a semi-sequel which is much bigger than this hack, but just as fun as this one.

Are you planning to make any new enemies in this game. The enemies in this hack were amazing like the zombie and the metroid.

Yes. I already made a few new enemies already. I will make a thread about it later. Please put any other discussions of the "semi-sequel" in the thread when I make it, or in PMs. Thank you.

Edit: You can still discuss a tiny bit about it here, until I make that thread.

Well, I have CNROM animation patches (4 frames & 8 frames, banks inserted or not) that work for BGs/blocks and sprites. I also have MMC3 animation animation patches (8 extra frames, banks inserted or not) that only work for BGs/blocks.

It's suppossed to blink. For the banks-already-inserted patches I didn't want to transfer the copyrighted stuff. I just made it 00's with MMC3 or FF's with CNROM.

I give this a 9/10, because it has many features, including comparing one file with another (which helps me a lot with my hacks), loading the properties, deleting, applying a template to, or opening a file in a text editor, manipulating bits of values, adding bookmarks, and more. However, it does lack a few features, like Gold Finger's, searching strings with unknown values (i.e. 00??12??F2????33), and it's finding option doesn't match case, in which I believe when you find stuff, they should always match case anyway.

Posted on 08-14-05 09:05 PM, in Suggestion on How to Make Newbies Read the FAQ Link
I was thinking about a way on how to make new members read the FAQ. I thought that after you register, you can't post yet until you read the FAQ. When you read the FAQ to qualify for making your first post, you have to read ot question by question. After reading the FAQ like this, you take a (pretty easy) test about the behavior, spam, and "I've been banned" questions of the FAQ. If you pass the test (which is getting everything right), you can post. Otherwise, you have to read it again and take the test again. What do you think about this? Perhaps this might lower the amount of bans, spam, or flames.

When you register, you are automatically redirected to the FAQ. It's enough.
You can take a test about the rules, but that doesn't mean you understand them. I mean what are you doing, copying and pasting text? Or would you have to word it in a specific way? How would you know the right way to answer? Would an admin have to approve of your being registered?
There isn't an epidemic of newbies not reading the FAQ either. It seems like a waste of time.

Plus a lot of time, especially with flaming, people who get in trouble don't think, "Wow, I had no idea this sort of thing was frowned upon! I should have read the FAQ.".

Good points. I guess it does take up a lot of time. It may not work very well. It might work for very few people then. I guess it could also be annoying, too. I was thinking this might be too complex, anyway. Now this makes me wonder if it's even possible for new features that could to reduce bans, spam, flames, or stuff like that.

Yeah, I guess so. It might drive people crazy. I guess we should just hope for more "good" newbies (as in those who follow the rules) or hope that the mind control device can be invented soon.

Posted on 08-16-05 11:24 PM, in Demo: The Super Mario Bros.' Super Adventures Link
Right now, I'm making another SMB hack. It's a multi-part hack called The Super Mario Bros.' Super Adventures. I will release a Ver. 0.15 demo here.

Some of the features in this demo include:
- SMB2j, Ice Climber, Balloon Fight, Vs. Duck Hunt, and SMB3 Graphics for BGs/blocks
- New Enemies including Upside-Down Piranha Plants, Sidesteppers (the crabs from the original Mario Bros.), icicles, and more
- New Bullet Mario suit (Part 2)
- Jumping physics similar to SMB2j.
- Upside-Down Pipes (Part 1)
- Pole System from SMB2j (Part 2)
- Floating/Air Attribute Replacing the Water Attribute (Part 2)
- Password protected IPS patches (like The Quest After SMB2j): Use the passwords given by the kidnapped victims.

Features to come in the final version include:
- Sprite & BG Animation with CNROM
- Secret replacement for the A+start continue code
- New Quests
- More parts

Here are some screenshots of this demo:

You can see the web page of this hack for more info and screenshots.

Download it here.

Patch each of the files to trained ROMs. To add a trainer to a (SMB) ROM, apply the patch in this zip file. So patch the trainer IPS patch first, then patch the IPS of the part of the hack. Use the password in the end of Part 1 to extract Part 2 in the zip file.

UPDATE: The "P" in the "PTS" sign from Part 2 is slightly thinner and Part 2 is now password-locked.
UPDATE 2: Bowser bridge graphics for Part 2 is changed.
