Actually GCN games could be ripped at that point, though it hadn't gone public. All they did was use the PSO exploit to write a program that dumps all the data off the disc. That's how all GCN rips are done. No I won't tell you where to get the program.

I was thinking about this a while ago, and I figured I could probably make one, but I was gonna do it for the original GB since I know more about it. (Plus it'd connect to the parallel port, since that's easier to make. ) I haven't got around to trying it, since I don't have a lot of spare link/parallel port cables. In theory it could easily work, but even the slightest lag would probably muck everything up (can't exactly slow down the real GB to wait for a packet), so you'd want to stick to LAN play (or really fast broadband) or linking a GB and an emulator. (Of course the emulator would need to be designed for it as well.)

Nintendo is like that. They program their games to let you win up until the end, then you lose horribly. It's frustrating, but it's a good strategy for them. If you just lose right away you think "this game sucks, the hell with it" and return it/sell it (Nintendo hates used game sales since they don't make money off it), and generally think less of the company who made it. However, if you're doing really good and then at the end you lose, sure you're pissed but you think "I was so close... I can win next time" and you keep playing. Until you break the game or win.

BTW, Mario Kart Double Dash is more fun the bigger a TV you use. You can just sit closer, of course.

I find Toad's kart to be the best. It's WAY fast, and handles good. The Mario Bros' are good too, simply because they look so cool and don't suck.

OK, people, listen up. You can't import WAV, MP3, MIDI etc files into a game. MIDI could be possible if it were a very low-quality file, but like MBD said nobody would actually use those. MOD could be possible as it's similar to SPC, but not just any MOD file would work. The closest you can probably hope for is importing VERY SMALL WAV files for instruments, and composing tracks with them by hand. The SPC-700 is very limited (only 64K of memory, and part of that has to be used for sound effects, instruments, all the other songs, and the ASM code that plays them), and SMW's engine isn't very flexible either.

Using the Winamp plugin, Zelda: OoT's are the only ones that work. With all the rest I get 'Bad sparse rom' or 'failed to load ROM to memory'. What now? I want my music dammit.

Bah, that damn server keeps going down. Try again tomorrow. (Dunno when it'll be back up, I don't really have any control over it.) I had to move my layout to this server because of that - wouldn't be so bad if it just spat out a 404, but it actually sits there trying to load forever, so nothing else will.

Notes:
======
LZ77 is a compression algorithm based on a series of headers,
compressed "pairs" and raw data. The headers are a series of
bits that, obviously, are either 1's or 0's corresponding to
the next piece of data being raw or compressed, respectively.

If it's 1, just pull the next byte of uncompressed data. If
it's 0, read the next two bytes of compressed data. These
bytes are a 16-bit pair of values, where these values are 4
bits then 12 bits.


The 12-bit value is a Distance value that tells the decoder
how many bytes backwards in the previously decoded data to
go from the end of the decoded data, minus 1. Add 1 to this
value when you decode it.

The 4-bit value is a Length value that tells how many bytes
to read from the Distance position which are to be copied
to the end of the output file, minus 3. Add 3 to this value
when you decode it.

Simply keep track of the current Header, Pair and Raw
offsets in the file you're decoding and you're good to go.
For encoding, it's simply a matter of checking an 18-byte
forward-read buffer with the previous 4096 bytes of the
file, looking for the longest match. If the length of the
match is greater than 2, then the data is compressed. Else,
it's included raw.
