Some BIOSes have auto-startup options, a virus could mess with that. Either way I'd recommend you scan with the modem turned off.

The voice in the BG is my brother. Yes there is an all your base reference, and a pretend order of several thousand burritos. That "WEEEEOOOOOEEEEEOOOOOEEEEEEOOOOO" is using my real voice too.

Hmm, I hadn't thought about the access speed. How much is 1ns? I'm not sure the PC could keep up.

IE is one of the worst-coded pieces of poop I've seen yet. It's slow, full of security holes, crashes every few minutes, and lacks several essential options such as disabing certain Javascripts, tabs, blocking popups, a "Never trust content from Spyware Inc" button on the install-on-demand prompt (in fact, just do like Mozilla and display the item as a link to the plugin site), and much, much more. It's also loaded with useless functions (such as various JS crap, VBScript, etc) that bog it down and present hundreds of opportunities for annoying scripts and exploits. A web page should not be able to control your CD-ROM drive! Firefox has none of these problems. In fact, it has no features whatsoever. All it does is render HTML. A fast program is useless if it doesn't do anything! Opera, I haven't tried yet, and I don't see a need. Mozilla works perfectly for me. |

I had one of those Yak Baks. In fact, I want one. I can think of a lot of uses for a very cheap digital sound recorder even if it only has a 6-second memory.

I can't get K++ to download at all. Uploading works fine, of course, so I suspect it's not a bug.

Bah. I had that game, it was alright at first but the later levels just made me want to scream. It's glitchy as hell, and the so-called "control room" they mentioned in the manual - the whole reason I kept playing - doesn't exist!

Well why not just move them? Personally I refuse to buy a 1019 until Nintendo addresses the very common issue of games not being able to store multiple save files on one card. Pok |

Does he always use the same computer? If so, there shouldn't be a big problem. Also, if he's using school computers, they most likely run through one central server, so they'll all have the same IP as far as the rest of the world is concerned.

So 2MB, which means 2,097,152 bytes per second, or if I'm doing this right, about one byte every 500 ns. I would need about twice that speed.

Mine also refuses to play the WMAs it claims it can play. However, I know of a method to convert any audio format to WAV. 1) Open the file in whatever program can play it. 2) Open Sound Recorder and record 60 seconds of silence. Save this and re-insert it into the current file (bringing the length up to 120, 180, etc) until it's longer than the file you want to convert. (This gets around the 60-second limit.) 3) Go to Edit -> Audio Properties, and click Volume under Sound Recording. Select Stereo Mix, Wave Out mix, or whatever it's called on your system. (If it's not there, go to Options -> Properties, and enable all options under "Show the following volume controls".) 4) Start recording in Sound Recorder, then start playing in the other program. Make sure there are no other sounds during this time. When you're done you should have a WAV of the sound! This method is nice because it can convert any format that any program can play. Have fun finally being able to convert all those MIDIs without spending way too much on a program that doesn't work. |

True, but future games could contain this ability. There's really no reason they can't just search for all save files instead of stopping at the first one.

Tabbed browsing, popup blocking, password remembering, download manager, themes, customizable search, alternate styles, ad blocking, extensions and type-ahead find called today. Says they hate that you completely missed them. Most useful functions in Mozilla are still there in Firefox. The menus are less cluttered, and I actually had to dig deep into settings to be able to recite those. That's the great thing - all of those features are there, but they're not bogging your browser down (as the case might be in other browsers, such as IE), and they're not in your face when you don't need them. I call bullshit on your "All it does is render HTML." sentence - it's the same, if a slightly outdated version, goddamn rendering engine. Mozilla is a suite, and the web browser in that suite is a lot clunkier than Firefox, even if the feature set is comparable, if not mostly identical. OK, so I exaggerated a bit. It can render HTML, save passwords, browse in tabs, and all sorts of other very basic features. That's about it. Last I checked, I couldn't even save an image, and it was no faster than Mozilla. 1/2 the size and 1/4 the features, hardly seems worth it to me. (BTW, Mozilla also has extension support.) |

I passed the level 1 test by one point. Now I can drive with someone who has a real license. Soon I need to go for the level 2 test; it's basically the same as a full license except you can't have any booze at all (no problem).

Yes, you generally want to avoid running as Root, as it's very easy to break Linux. If necessary, open a console and use the su command (like Vim said). Also, in the start menu, under fixedsyss (I think) there's one that says Superuser Mode, this also runs as root if you're using an admin account (which I imagine you are). Now, since you've already posted a topic on it, I need help as well. I've had Mandrake 9.1 installed for a while now, but can't get it online. I've copied the IP address, DHCP, and all the other network settings from Windoze, but it won't connect. The symptoms I'm getting are: -At bootup, Starting ACPI fails because the directory 'proc\acpi\event' can't be found. -It hangs for a really long time at 'bringing up interface eth0'. \dev\eth0 is nowhere to be found in my file browser. -Though all settings appear correct and config tools say I should be connected, I'm not. Pressing Connect in the Network settings in Mandrake Control Center comes up with a connection failed error. The light on the network card as well as the PC Connected light on the modem never come on. (I'm using a cable modem connected through a network card. I've tried configuring as both Cable and LAN.) -The Network Connections wizard says I have a winmodem. Though this system came with an internal modem, I removed it a long time ago because my NIC didn't seem to like it. (Whenever both are installed, neither work. Anyone know how to fix that?) -At shutdown, I get 2 error messages relating to drm_i810_wait_ring. The system shuts off too fast for me to read them though. One mentions something about space being some number when some other number was wanted. My NIC is a Realtek RTL8139, and the modem is an RCA model DCM305. I haven't been able to find Mandrake drivers for them (IIRC, one only supports Red Hat and one's installer only has uninstall), but it hasn't complained about drivers either. [edit] Hey, there is a modem in here. It just hasn't done anything in a long time. Somehow my NIC even worked with it until now. Does the 486 have a CD drive? I would try putting the HD in it and installing from there, then moving it back to the other computer.

I would suspect a bad capacitor (sort of an electric holding tank) in the power supply. It might be taking a while to 'fill up', so until it does, the PSU doesn't output enough power for the system to run properly. Try leaving it at the black screen for 5 minutes or so, then shutting it off for about 5 seconds and turning it on again.

Probably rm -rf, basically the same as 'del *.* /s /f /q' in DOS. It is easy to break Linux though, so you don't want to be screwing around with root. |
