Does Windows know that? It might still be using generic drivers.

That's probably the problem then. Mine wasn't pro (didn't know they even made that), in fact it was some trial edition. (But if I reinstalled it, the trial restared too, hehe. ) Not a good way to get a positive reputation, making trial versions suck like that. All I ever got was "The file soandso.js is infected with the w32.soandso virus".

I don't know specifically how it works, but what I do know is that the save files start with this format: "ZELDAZ" in ASCII, then the player's name in hex (not ASCII), padded to 8 characters. A bit further in is health, money, etc. At the load screen, I think all 4 are loaded. The default one (which BTW is there because the game has to have one loaded) is loaded at the title screen. (As I understand the beta code simply mucks up the title sequence, so instead of doing the loading screen, it lets you play in that area. Since this area is designed only for the title sequence, it has no real warp data. (Depending on the format, either the warps are assigned some BS values, or the warp data comes after the map data and in this case is just random stuff from RAM.)) When you're playing the game, what it actually does is copy the entire save file right into RAM, where the global variables for everything that gets saved would be. When you save this just gets copied back in. Because the game works like this, I guess they just found it easier to create a default save file to load into that area, than to assign it all default values. ...So, long story short: The game copies save files directly into global variables and back, so they made a default save file rather than individually set each variable. (I should hack a Save File Mod, but that'd require comparing RAM dumps from an emulator, since I'd need to use save states. (On a real N64, I'd need to reset the game to change files, which crashes it when you have the GS in.) [edit] I ran a query, but didn't find "ZELDAZ" in the ROM anywhere. [edit. again] Alright, you got me curious. I poked around in RAM (V1.2, since that's what I have), and found this: The save file format appears to go like this: ZELDAZ[death count?][name] The death count, I'm pretty sure that's what it is, it's just 0000 for mine, but that matches. Results of search for 'ZELDA' in various places: Title/In-Game 006A80 - Debug Error Screen 0FC562 - !ZELDA (name=blank?) - SRAM header/global options? 0FC624 - ZELDAZ (default file) 11AC9C - ZELDAZ (current file) File Select 2A02B6 - !ZELDA 2A02CC - ZELD ( At 2A02D2, you'll find 05F4. I seem to remember there was some significance to that number...) 2A02EC - ZELDAZ (file 1) 2A173C - ZELDAZ (file 2) 2A2B8C - ZELDAZ (file 3) Interesting note: After creating a save file, deleting it, and recreating the header, the file I created was displayed with the name I gave it. (The 'save file' icon that 'links' the name to the file number isn't present except for a second when I open another file, oddly enough.) Strange, because the save data whose header I just recreated has a blank name! Also: After killing another file's header, it's still there! I think the !ZELDA entries mark the start of save file data. Not sure WTF follows it, maybe global data like options, but that shouldn't take so much space. After that each file that exists is makred by ZELDAZ. The default save file is at another place entirely. BTW, interesting codes I found: 801262BC 0000 - Crash @ file select 801D98B3 0000 - Crash @ title (only with value 0000 ) 801DB502 0000 AND 801DB51E 0000 - Stiff joints (edited by HyperHacker on 06-13-04 06:08 AM) (edited by HyperHacker on 06-13-04 11:30 AM) |

Emulation is perfectly legal. It's distribution of copyrighted code that's illegal. There's nothing wrong with a program you made yourself that emulates a Playstation, for example, but the BIOS and games are copyrighted, so it'd be illegal to give out copies of them.

Regarding the map size: Perhaps you could use 4x4 tiles? You'd have 15 different tiles: xx ox xo xx xx oo ox ox xo xo oo oo ox xo oo xx xx xx ox xo xx ox xo ox xo ox xo oo oo oo Where x is a black square and o is a white square. You check one room, the room beside it, below it, and diagonal from it, and choose a tile that represents the status of each. Essentially, you'd shrink the displayed map by 1/4 (though you'd need almost 8x as many tiles). |

This is a black vs white 'unknown' level. It doesn't have a name yet. Great palettes, the BG kinda sucks tho. This is my overworld, I especially want to know what you think about this It's awesome! Certainly looks very active. Please kill the level numbers though. These are the sub maps. Nice! The Star Road and Vanilla Dome ones especially pwn. You need to get rid of the 'ZSNES' thing, though. This is a level from SMB3 using all SMW GFX. Looks pretty neat. The platforms are odd, though. I really like this level, just take a guess as to what layer 2 is... Pudding? Nice GFX. This is just a preview of those spikes turned into pencils. Let me know what you think I always thought those looked like giant pencils. A little maze like level that uses walk through crates and blue pows... Cool, but the BG sucks. |

That idea is awesome. Is your OW gonna be like a Windows GUI? BTW, love the DOS prompt BG. One thing though... My hack also features an SML 1-1 recreation, and a few other level rips. Just thought I'd mention that so you don't think I stole them. (They look a bit different anyway. ) |

DKC had great GFX, YI had nice GFX, sound and gameplay, FZero and Super Mario Kart used 3D very well, and Star Fox really pushed the SNES to the limits. (I couldn't stand the actual game though, steering was way hard. The graphics were ugly, but that's excuseable. )

I haven't played most of those, so I'm gonna say Super Mario Land 2. It was just hard enough, to the point where it was still somewhat fun, except that it wasn't hard in a fun way so much as an "AAAARRRRGGGHHH DIE DIE STAB KILL" way. Practically nothing but long jumps between moving platforms and badly-placed enemies. The bosses were way hard too. But the two things that really pissed me off were: If you lose all your lives, you have to beat all the bosses again (and the game autosaves), and once you get all 6 coins you have to finish the game right then and there! I dunno if it was intentional, but it happened on every copy I ever tried; if you get all 6 coins, then shut the game off, WHAM! All the save files get erased. ARGH!

Oh, great. Those were my only Hondews too. Don't suppose Nintendo'll fix it if I send it in, seeing how neither of those options are really feasible? (Then again, maybe it's intentional. Buy their other game, or get really lucky and find one of them booths. Think about it...) |
[edit] Of course, if that were the case, they probably wouldn't have offered to fix it for free. That is, if I can find a cheap enough way to get it there. (edited by HyperHacker on 06-13-04 04:53 PM)

Perhaps there should be an option to disable the new/off graphics in thread listings. They're small, sure, but there's a lot of them. (Could be replaced by various coloured text.) |
