| The easiest method is to get a cart that has whatever hardware your game uses (eg for a Mario Kart hack, use a DSP-1 cart, preferrably a Mario Kart cart), remove the ROM chip and put a flash ROM/EEPROM in its place. Problem is you need to figure out the pinout of the original chip, and wire up the new one to match it, which can be tricky. Also, you need a way to write your new ROM onto the chip; most people choose to simply use a socket and cut a hole in the case so they can pull the chip right out and stick it in a writer, but depending how your cart is set up, you may be able to adapt a spare SNES to be one that writes the chip in-cart. Or, you could simply add a parallel port wired to the chip's address and data lines, with some simple circuitry, so that you could flash the chip in-cart through your parallel port. You'd most likely need to write your own software though. If you can't get that figured out, you may find it easier to buy a simple breadboard (like a circuit board, but no traces, and full of holes to stick components in) and make a cart from scratch. If you do this I suggest you cut the bottom part of the original cart's mainboard off and put it in yours, that way you don't need to make the connector. This becomes more difficult as you add more stuff - with a ROM-only game, it's generally pretty easy, but ROM-only SNES games are uncommon (most have a bit of SRAM, and a lot of SNES games use expansion chips). If your cart is designed that it can write to its own 'ROM', one method you may enjoy is making it a multicart. The first program, which would start at bootup, would be a combination menu/updater - it selects the game, and can download a new ROM from the PC (how you connect the SNES to the PC is up to you) and write it onto the cart. This way, you need not build/buy a writer; you can simply borrow one (or in some cases, use an existing one - try using the BIOS chip off an old motherboard; you can use a BIOS flash utility to write your loader program to the chip, so long as the chip currently contains a working BIOS for the board). Then once your program is in place, you can flash using the SNES itself, and not have to disassemble the cart or build a writer (unless, of course, your program fails or becomes corrupt). Finally, keep in mind two key points: 1) Your cart need not look fancy or authentic; it need only do its job. If you plan to modify the cart a lot, you may be better off having the main board outside of the cart itself, bare, with only wires inside the cart connecting the board to the SNES. It won't look pretty, but it'll make things easier. 2) You're only limited by what the console can do and what you can do. SNES is great for expansion chips, and you need not stick to the ones used in commercial games. You can build an Athlon XP 3000+, MP3 player, toaster, or whatever the hell you want into the cart, so long as you're capable of it. (Of course, you'll need to add support to any emulators you intend to use. ) Just keep in mind the SNES's limitations (and cooling if you're going with those wacky ideas ), and go nuts! |
