Yes, I'm pretty sure the bird sounds are an actual music track. It makes sense, seeing how they didn't put any actual music there; easier to just record bird sounds for the music than to code a random bird sound generator and not use the music track at all. And I was just thinking, in that pic where you remade part of an SMB level, you could play with the 'behind Mario' camera mode. Speaking of which, one of those commands must set the default camera mode. Notice in levels like Snowman's Land and the first Bowser course, it starts zoomed out. Plus, there aren't many GBA hacks to begin with. Just because you don't agree with a hack's content doesn't mean it's not a good hack. I don't agree with the content of a lot of SMW hacks (specifically, the ridiculously hard levels in the first world) but that doesn't mean that all the work that went into the level design and graphics is meaningless. They're still good hacks, just not my style. |

You guys are lucky. In high school, you have to be there at 9 AM. Problem with me is, I officially get ready for bed at around 11, but tend to stay up until like 1:30 doing stuff on the computer. Then I have to take a nap after school, because I can barely keep my eyes open. I don't function well on less than 9 hours of sleep. |

Anyone think maybe the flag's motion was a special effect? Actually, I've heard theories about how it could have been affected by their movements (since they're in a vacuum) but I can't say how much sense that actually makes.

I think that's how they work. You might have to do the knife-swap trick. Don't they come with instructions?

Well I could be wrong about the bird sounds. What I wrote may make more sense, but this is Mario 64 we're talking about. And yes, that song does rock. |

I've considered doing this with Pokémon G/S, but those are 2MB. Of course, I'd be using a disassembler which gives re-assembleable output. It's just a matter of making one. What I figure I'd do is add support to the program to mark areas as data (or even better, but harder to do, write an emulator that logs which parts are executed and which are just plain read), then go through it one ROM bank at a time, turning the disassembled code into something readable and re-marking anything that's incorrectly marked as code or data. Really, the best way to do this is the emulator idea. If you know a lot of the game's RAM and/or ROM addresses, you can tell it what they are, and then it can create the disassembly appropriately, switching addresses with their names. Since it's executing the code, it should be able to tell which areas are code and which aren't, as long as you try to do as much as possible in the game so as to get as much code as you can executed. (Might be good to put a comment near jumps that jump to data areas, so that you can examine them and see if maybe they're really code.) If you managed to execute all the code (not too hard in a simple game), then the only things it would miss is code that gets copied into memory and code that never gets used, which would probably be pretty easy to spot. Well, a good rule to follow when you're trying to make hard levels is to keep in mind that you'll always be better at it than the player. You know all the tricks and shortcuts and have undoubtedly played the levels dozens if not hundreds of times during testing. (I hope...) Someone who's never played them before is going to have a significantly harder time beating them. So if it's so hard you can barely finish it, a lot of people probably won't be able to finish it at all.

Heh, I'm the same way. I've had projects going for a few years that are still in the works. Mainly because other projects take priority. In some cases (like my SMW hack) I simply don't feel like working on them often, but I do work on them. Other times it's because they depend on another project (for example, I intend to finish Hack-O-Matic before I finish my Pokémon hack, because it'll just make everything so much easier). I just work on whatever project I feel like at the time. Probably 90% of my free time is spent working on them, so they do get done... Of course, with programs it's another story. A lot of programs of mine have been put on indefinite hold due to weird bugs I just can't figure out. This never seems to happen with hacks. |

Well it fits the theme. An original-graphic-only hack is cool, but there's no reason you can't use ExGFX to 'touch up' the graphics, in order to work around restrictions and the occasional error. For example, I don't think many people would care if you made an alternate version of the ? blocks surrounded by blue instead of transparent so that they'd fit into the water properly. Also: Love the BG colours. |

If Mario were black and white as well, it'd make it a bit harder to distinguish him from other sprites. I quite like the idea of him being the only coloured sprite. |
