I tell you what needs to be done... A bunch of us need to get together and optimize the hell out of SMW's code, so that we could actually add things without slowing it down. (And free up some ROM space. ) I don't suppose anyone has code for measuring a SNES's CPU usage? It could come in handy. (I know how an emulator could measure it, but I'm more interested in how to do it in-game... Super Mario RPG does it.) Knowing how much free memory we have to work with would help too. Heck, maybe we could make it an SA-1 game; having a fast second CPU to do some of the heavier math and such would be a big help, and SA-1 is just another 65816 so the only problem would be how to interface with it (I'm sure any emulator's source code would tell you how).

Maybe you could just hack one of the generator sprites to make a Koopa generator.

I dunno, Mario Sunshine was the only Mario platformer I didn't like. SM64 was awesome.

Tooltime!

Whenever I'm up at 3:14 AM, I tend to yell "It's pi time!" Similar things can be heard at 4:04 AM and 1:37 PM.

Didn't they fix that Geno Whirl bug in some versions?

Also I'm sure the debug menu will be quite useful for hacking with.

Hello and welcome to last week. It's September 7th.

I think the max size for an N64 ROM is 32MB; any higher than that and you need to use some bankswapping or something. Though I'm not entirely sure. I doubt we'll be adding that much any time soon anyway.

If you can get me a dump of what would be in this 'bank 7' I can look for it in memory and see if I can find where it starts. From there a pointer table shouldn't be difficult to produce. I doubt it contains any length information though.

134°F is about 56°C, which is a bit hot. My Sempron runs at 1.7ghz and averages 45°C. You might consider adding some case fans.

You're lucky. My cat hates being picked up. Makes flea collar changing a bit difficult. We don't really trim her nails, though, she takes care of them by scratching up a chunk of carpet nobody cares about. She's a strange cat; she'll pretty much let me do whatever I want with her, and comes up and sleeps on my bed next to me pretty much every night, but she just plain will not let you hold her. She just squirms to get away the whole time. Even if you just set her on your lap she jumps off right away. But she's otherwise very trusting... of course that's only after she gets to know you, and she must always sniff your hand before you can touch her. She's a big scaredy cat when it comes to strangers.

Oh yes, and she greets me when she comes into my room. And sometimes she makes this weird kinda noise, like she meows without opening her mouth, and purrs at the same time so it's a really heavily modulated sound... anyone else's cat do that?

It should retain most compatibility as long as no data is moved or reformatted. It'd just be replacing large/commonly-used subroutines with faster versions. A fair bit of work, sure, but not too hard for a group project. Each person goes through different parts of the code and writes optimized versions of slow routines (or where the change is minimal, like changing 'lda #0, sta $blah' to 'stz $blah', just hex-editing the ROM directly), then one person assembles and places all the new code and compiles all their changes to the ROM together to ensure compatibility.

What, that I didn't back up last time? I would have, but for one I didn't have enough space on any drive and to use CDs would have cost hundreds (60 GB on 700MB CDs = about 90 discs, and yes, I should get a DVD drive), and for two I wasn't expecting to have to do everything manually. Mandrake had a nice graphical installer, but I just wasn't really pleased with it in general.

Anyway I've backed up everything, but I'm going to postpone the actual installation until I get an ink cartridge so I can print the handbook, which I hope will be tomorrow. Beats having to open the on-disc one every now and then. (I'd print it at the library, but it's 145 pages; that'd cost almost 40 bucks. )

If you read around a bit you'll find that not everyone considers bouncing off 50 Koopas in perfect succession as 'easy' as you do. Plus it's a very repetitive and over-used way to lengthen the level.

I wonder if you could do something crazy, like add another user statistic into the equation to vary the EXP rates a bit.

What is this Maple anyway? Some program that can make a formula out of a table of values? I'd love to have something like that...

Depends how you do it. Most apps will let you save a file with that name, but you can't rename a file to that in Explorer.
