You've opened it in text mode. 0A is a newline character, so it may be converting it to 0D0A or something like that. I'm not sure how to open it in binary mode, though, since I just use fopen(). Also, I wrote a program like this and I found I had to do map[y][x] = blah. |

What we really need is a better patching system. IPS can't handle byteswapping or files above 16MB.

Stop putting words in my mouth. I'm quite grateful for Fu's work, and I know he's put a lot of effort into LM (and his other programs for that matter). But that doesn't mean he can't dig up a ROM address from his notes/code and post it. I've written editors and make big ASM hacks and such myself, but when I have the answer to something I don't hesitate to look it up and post it. (And my notes are kinda messy too, but I actually bother to organize them and write them so that I can tell what they mean later. Not hard to do really.) I don't expect him to just give anyone the code for one of his ASM hacks that he developed himself, but when someone is asking for a really simple piece of information like a memory address or some such thing, and you have it right there on your HD, why not take a minute to look for it?

How often do you make a hack and never actually modify anything in a hex editor? Also, you forgot another definition of hack. Like the actor was a hack, or what have you. |

"This will be, without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form" But what does that mean? Gameplay changes? A different kind of game altogether? If I don't see a ridiculously awesome OoT-style Zelda game for Revolution, I will simply shrivel up and die from withdrawl. |

Oh man, that reminds me of something that happened waaaay back in grade school. I was on the swing, and this kid wanders in front of me... I come flying forward and boot him in the head with both feet before I realize he's there. I go flying off the swing, do a flip in the air, and land flat on my back. It hurt a bit but it was funny as hell.

Awesome. Looking at commands 06 and 07 it seems like this is some sort of script code. If you looked at what the game does with the command number you could very well find a jump table pointing to the code of every command. Any idea how the RAM 'banks' are mapped to real memory addresses? Maybe they're byteswapped or something, like 01 00 23 45 should really be 00 01 45 23. If it was just a straight memory address, it seems pretty odd to stick a zero in there. |

I would still consider it a hack if you didn't use a hex editor. I'm just saying it's somewhat rare that you don't. Even SMW hackers do, quite often, despite all LM's features. Editors just present the same data in an easier-to-use manner. And yes, for the most part, making the games is a lot easier than hacking them. Sure they have to do everything from scratch, but they have huge teams with like dozens of people devoted entirely to graphics, sound, level design and so on. Code? They write one game then just copy, paste, and edit the source files for others. They have official development kits where they can plug the console into a PC and dump memory, view debug readout, anything you can think of. I've made my own crappy, simple games from scratch and aside from having to make all your resources yourself, it's actually pretty easy. You know all the code and can make it do whatever you want without having to trace or hack anything. And what Glyph was saying about how "we'd know it better if we figured everything out ourselves", I agree, that's total BS. That's one of the biggest reasons that people refuse to release their information is that they're afraid that n00bs will just use it to make something and not learn. Now come on, really... who cares? If they want to learn, they can look it up and try to figure things out on their own. That's how I learned even the most basic things of hacking. I knew I could just go here and type this number and I would get unlimited lives or whatever, but I didn't, I studied and looked at why that would happen. But if someone doesn't care to learn what others already know, and just wants to make a hack, why try to stop them? Just because you don't know how the game copies its HDMA tables into memory or what have you doesn't mean you can't make a good hack. Anyone play Rob-Omb's Quest? That was a great hack, and the author didn't even know what a hex editor was. |

RPGs are alright (as long as there's not like half an hour of dialog/cutscenes every 10 minutes and you don't have to spend 3 hours leveling up between each area), but the hack-and-slash style of Zelda is just awesome. No RPG could ever match the intense battles of OoT, not to mention the just plain sweetness of chopping your enemies to bits in realtime. I do think a Zelda RPG could be pretty damn cool but to have the entire series go that way.... no. Just no. Of course, an RPG is just one possibility. They didn't say what they were planning to do. |

A science forum in general, maybe, but I doubt it'd be very active. No reason you can't start threads about them though.

An 80-minute CDR won't hold 80 minutes of video; it's measuring CD-format music. Also, VLC can record; it's a bit complicated but it does a decent job. Go to Open Capture Device, and set it up however you want. Be sure to check the options Device Properties, Tuner Properties and Stream Output. Next to Stream Output, click Settings. Click File and fill in a filename. (Play Locally is also a good option if you want to see the video on your screen as you record.) For encapsulation method, you might want to experiment a bit, I found that only ASF would actually work. Finally, check off Video Codec if you want video and Audio Codec if you want sound, and click OK however many times, then press Play. The device properties and tuner properties will appear, and after you close both, it starts recording. |
