Bit of a bump, and you forgot one of the coolest rarely-used features. Not sure exactly how, but JS can download and parse XML. Gmail uses it a lot.

I primarily use XP. On old crappy computers I use 98. I've also been trying to use Linux, but haven't successfully set it up yet (and admittedly, haven't tried much ).

Play it with VLC and record it with Audacity. Any sound recorder can record any sound output if you go to Volume Control, go to the recording options and select Stereo Mix as input.

Open DOS, type 'cd\', then type 'dir /s filename'. Finds any file named 'filename', fastest search you'll ever see. If you don't find it just type another drive letter (eg 'f:') and try again. In filename you can use * to match anything (eg 'h*m' matches 'ham', 'hum' and 'hoot, hoot, WHAM') and ? to match one letter (eg 'h?m' matches 'ham' and 'hum' but not 'helm').

VB has awesome debugging, though. You don't need to do that. Use breakpoints and debug.print; you can even type code in the Immediate window and press Enter to execute it. (Of course, in C's defense, this is only possible because VB is interpreted, but yeah. )

Also, Kawa, that's exactly what assert() is for. Instead of having to constantly watch for a specific output, you could just put 'assert(YDimGame != 0)' in a commonly-executed loop or something. IIRC the program will stop, or at least warn you, once that condition becomes false, and then you just look at the rest of the debug output to see what happened. (Tip for VB users: debug.assert. )

Well, it doesn't if you just hex edit the ROM while it's open in LM... you might have to re-open it in LM for it to re-read the level mode table.

Also, $00:9400 writes the CGADSUB setting for the overworld, and $03:C502 writes it for the 'Mario Start' screen. (Change $03:C503 to 00 to hide the text.)

Yeah, you can edit the level modes, but there's no apparent way to use the unusable ones. Some sort of memory map problem. Not sure about LM; I think it reads the tables from ROM when it first opens the file.

So what changes should I be looking at?

136. Putting an entrance on an odd-numbered screen in a vertical level will cause background corruption. (Layer 2 levels should be alright.) This may have been posted before, but it's good advice. I found out the hard way.

If you're using a vertical level, that's probably the problem.

It'd really help to line things up, especially entrances where you pretty much have to count the tiles manually anyway. (Heck, why can't you drag and drop those? )

I know what you mean. It drove me nuts trying to figure it out. Eventually I just tried every possible FG/BG position combo, only to find NONE worked, and looked at one of the original levels to see what they did different.

Also, really complex puzzles aren't necessarily good. People like being able to figure them out, you know.

[edit] AAAAAGH! Bad idea: Open your ROM in a hex editor, edit a bunch of levels, then save something in the hex editor.
