I hit a 'speed bump' at full speed on an ATV once. Not really a speed bump so much as a small, deep trench, but same effect. Nothing broken though. |

Radio Shack. You've got questions, we've got ridiculous markup. A 4 foot network cable costs TWENTY DOLLARS! Things like cell phone batteries are marked up 10x what they pay to get them. I'm surprised they haven't been charged for extortion or something. |

Well I was mostly thinking for NES games. Emulating all the SNES expansion chips on something small enough to fit in a SNES cart (and run off its power) would be difficult anyway, but NES mappers are generally just chips that route certain address/data lines to chip selects and whatnot. |
SNESwise, you might be able to make something where you can swap in whatever expansion chip you need, but it'd be a lot easier to just have one cart for each chip. Hm, just for the hell of it, I wonder if it's possible to have 2 expansion chips? Like SA-1 and SuperFX?

AHA! Found it in DD's ROM hacking notes in, guess what, ROM Hacking. $350AB controls what sound plays when you get 100 coins: |
01 = Coin sound. 02 = Power-up coming out/vine grow 04 = longer sound of 02 08 = Boom sound (cannon fireing) 10 = 'Tick' sound 20 = Powerup! 40 = 1-up 80 = Poof sound 90 = Odd "poof" sound A0 = Lost Kuribo Shoe B0 = Tail Wag C0 = dragged out 1-up sound I'm not sure if that includes the 16-byte header, but it should have a value of 0x40, just change it to 0xC0. It's interesting that these are two different sounds; this pretty much rules out the possibility of a bug. Now we need to find what writes 0xC0 to $4F2 (the sound control byte for these sounds).

Alright, so that list is like objects 1xx, the high bit being bit 1 of address 405722. If I can get an emulator to run I'll probably start on objects 0xx tomorrow or the day after, how many of those are known? |

Yeah, pretty nasty. They actually wasted space on a sound sample of that in a SNES game? SNES developers always seemed to want to keep their ROMs small so they don't have to spend more money on bigger ROM chips. |
Also I know there was some old NES game that was incorrectly padded... Instead of properly adding zeros to the end of the file before they put it on the ROM chips, they just changed the file size, so the unused areas of the ROM got filled with other data on their hard drive. As a result a large chunk of the game's source code got included in the ROM! XD

Due to some ordering problems I'm going to be changing my order a bit for my new motherboard. Apparently the memory and CPU I wanted aren't available anymore. Instead I'm looking at this and this (and this board, which is still available). The only thing I noticed that might present a problem is that the memory is 400mhz, but the CPU's FSB is 333mhz. The board supports both, but can I mix them like that? (I'm sure I could run the CPU at 400, but I'd rather not try overclocking until I know everything works. ) |
