Hm, are the PPUs compatible? Could you rip one out of a PAL NES, put it in an NTSC one and have a 50hz NTSC system? If so it shouldn't be especially hard to put both in at once, with a switch on the power pins to select one; you wouldn't be able to switch in-game but it'd still be convenient. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Hm. You don't appear to have used the top half of the background... You could use HDMA to have a moon at the top that doesn't scroll. |

ESP: It has to be partially possible. Your brain gives off waves, and a machine could very well tell what you're thinking by them. For another person to pick them up or to tell the future, though, I'm not so sure of. |
Ghosts: We're powered by some sort of unknown force. If said force can give life to a lump of meat, no reason it cant manifest itself or something. I find it difficult to believe the extremes, like 'omg a ghost came to my party and got loaded and puked ectoplasm all over the stairs', though, because it wouldn't have a brain and thus no access to memory or ability to think. EVP: I really doubt you can see or hear dead people or anything like that in static. You can pick up stray radio signals though. Nirvana: Hypnosis is possible. This, AFAIK, is just hypnosis to the next level. I dunno about the whole 'soul going to another plane' thing but until I read a few posts here I didn't even know WTF this was, so eh. Psychic powers: The brain's an amazing thing. Again, it's always giving off a bit of energy. You could probably concentrate this energy to do interesting things, but it'd be very, very difficult. Don't believe someone who says they can do it until you've seen it done. Aliens: If the universe is truly infinite, it's impossible for aliens not to exist. And even if not what's so special about Earth that it's the only planet with life in such a ridiculously huge space? And don't say it's the only one that can support life. One, we don't know that, and two, a species living on another planet would probably have different needs than a human. Humans can't live in water, either. Does that mean there's no such thing as fish? As for why they haven't visited us, several possible answers. 1) They can't. Just because they live on another planet doesn't mean they're a million zillion years ahead of us in technology. They could be plants. 2) They have, and we don't know it. Maybe we can't see them, maybe they're in disguise, maybe the government's hiding them. Hell maybe they're right in front of us and we don't notice. 3) They don't know we're here. Trillions of, if not infinite planets out there. They may not even know about this one yet. 4) They're scared of us. We are a pretty fucked up species, what with war and pollution and such.

If it can tell the government where I am at any point in time, it's bad. I really don't like the idea of all your money and information being controlled by the government. With cash, you have it, end of story. With computers, your money is a number on a hard drive. This presents a bit of a problem in that the computer may crash or get hacked, but that's not a huge issue as backups are frequent and security is fuckin' tight. The real issue is control. Suppose you piss off someone who runs the system? Clickitty click, typitty type, you owe $32767.69 in parking fees and haven't paid your taxes in 6 years. |

I was thinking about this a while ago. Robots could be the solution to making communism work, at least partially. |
Consider the idea that you get everything for free. That means the people who make it aren't getting anything in return. Why should they even do it then? They won't, that simple. But a robot doesn't care if it's being paid. A robot sits there and makes things 24/7. It does not, for that matter can not want anything in return. And therein lies the solution. If every job were done by robots, nobody would have to pay anybody for anything. (And we would have 24-hour leisure time. ) So how do we replace everyone with robots? Obviously people aren't going to like the idea that they don't have a job because a robot can do it better, and robots can't do everything. What this means is, don't replace people gradually. Develop and test robots that can do absolutely every job, and only replace people when they're all ready to do so. Total replacement avoids the issue of increasing unemployment rates. But wait... robots can't do everything. A robot can't write a book or paint a picture. Who does that? Well, you would still have people doing those jobs. People who enjoy doing them. I, for one, find it fun to design software and video games. I spend most of my spare time doing so. If they didn't have to pay for the materials and equipment, anyone could go out and do these things. After all, how many movie producers are only in it for the money? That's a huge perk, sure, but they wouldn't be doing it if they didn't enjoy producing movies. Now imagine you're sitting around at home. You don't go to work because robots do everything. Won't you get fat? That's where mandatory excersize programs come in. Everyone would be required to work out just enough to stay in shape. After all, with 16 hours of free time a day, you need something to do. (Perhaps TV stations could shut down during this period too.) Of course this idea has its share of flaws, but I figure as technology advances we can work out the kinks. What do you all think?

Pardon the bump but I felt the need to say this. Running out of oil is only one of many, many reasons we're screwed. |
1) Most computers today are 32-bit. This means they can work with numbers from 0 to 4,294,967,295. Their databases generally use 32-bit numbers to keep time. They count the number of milliseconds or seconds since Jan 1st, 1970, 12:00:00 AM. Come 2030-2040, they're going to max out. Big problem. 2) Sort of related to 1. The Y2K bug is really the Y2.156K bug. I can not believe so many people missed this. The number 100 means nothing to a computer. People wonder why they all rolled over to the year 2000 just fine? It's the number 255 we need to worry about. That's how far they can really count. So even if nothing happens when databases all think it's 1970, there may still be a problem in 2156 when they think it's 1900. 3) Pollution, global warming, overpopulation... you know the drill. All sorts of huge problems arisen from people reproducing so damn much and polluting. 4) An issue that's not often brought up: Electricity will, eventually, just plain stop working. Think about how most things work right now. The power runs through whatever it's powering, then into the ground. We're electrically charging the Earth. Just like charging a dead battery. Eventually it will be full, and then what? Best case scenario, any circuit that drains into the ground won't work. More likely, anytime one does, another gets electricity pushed back through it, probably ruining it. And there is the chance that the Earth will 'discharge' in a massive electricity explosion. Zap, you're dead! 5) And if none of that kills us, there is natural global warming. The sun is expanding. Eventually it'll be so big that Earth will just be too damn hot to support life. Have a nice day.

Well I don't know of a stretching method you could use in a layout, and that BG looks like crap when it's stretched anyway. |
As for transparency, it's somewhat possible but will look like crap on older computers that don't have the kind of font rendering WinXP does. I tried it once.

Anything that's not part of the level geometry itself (eg anything movable) should be defined in the objects list. |
You sure it's 12 bytes? I know they use float values for coords in memory, so I don't see how they couldn't in ROM, and those are 4 bytes each. Just the coordinates alone should be 12 bytes, then you have those other two properties, object ID (as in what the hell is it) and possibly size. It might have a type, too; I know the 3 types of ! boxes are one object that just use a certain byte to determine what colour/cap they are. |
