This (along with many other things in the game) works similarly to Super Mario World. 4-byte specifies an object, x location, y location, and size (of which half the byte is x and half is y). 5-byte is the same but instead of a single Size byte there's both X and Y size. Object 00 is an extended object set; it's a 4-byte object in which the Size byte specifies the object (sizes are fixed, usually at 1x1). The header format is actually like this: Byte 1 Byte 2 Byte 3 Byte 4 Byte 5 Byte 6 Byte 7 Byte 8 Byte 9 Byte 10 s=bg colour (behind all layers) t=tileset f=layer 1 object palette i=layer 2 image b=layer 2 object palette l=layer 3 type c=layer 3 object palette p=spriteset r=sprite palette o=layer ordering/priority (not fully tested) 00000= 00001=Sp, L3, L1, L2 00010= 00011=Sp, L1, L2 (no layer 3) 00100=Sp, L1, L3, L2 (L3 is dark and L2 is white) 00101=Sp, L3, L1, L2 00110= 00111=Sp, L1, L3, L2 01000= 01001=Setting for Raphael Raven fight (don't use) 01010= 01011=Sp, L1, L3, L2 01100= 01101=Weird translucent mess 01111=Sp, L3, L1, L2, with translucent L3 (Sp=Sprites, Lx = layer x) a=layer 3 tileset e=special effects (1100000=none) ?=no visible effect m=music y=initial layer 1 position (00=lowest, 11=highest) g=initial layer 2 position (00=highest, 11=lowest?) The two unknowns in byte 7 I figure are scrolling-related. The level pointer table starts at 0x7EA22 (file address).
