Nice offer, but I've already made arrangements to stay on-site. Plus what am I going to do with a computer? I'll either be at the con or sleeping. [edit] Anyone who bothers to read this... I'm planning to be in the food court at 1:00 PM on Saturday (meeting some other forum-goers there ). I'll be the hanyou with the bright yellow LCBO backpack. (It's not available to the public, so don't count on getting it mixed up. ) (edited by R2H2 on 05-26-05 03:15 PM) |

Maybe I'm just a freak, but contrary to what a lot of you are saying: |
-I've never read a book on programming (except one on ASM, but I was too young to understand it so I didn't really read much more than a few things that confused me). -Having used VB for a few years didn't at all affect my ability to learn C. In fact, getting familliar with the API through VB made C pretty easy. (Though a good part of it as well is that my copy of Visual Studio got corrupt and I can't get another any time soon, so I unexpectedly found myself quitting 'cold turkey'. ) I'll agree that in most cases, telling someone they should start out with VB isn't the best idea. However there are cases where you can tell that the person is a total n00b who would just be confused out of their head by a low-level language like C. VB at least helps them learn a bit about programming in general. Also, when someone asks for something and you reply "I found it in 2 milliseconds on Google n00b", at least have the decency to say what you searched for and link to the result. Knowing that one of Google's 8,058,044,651 possible results is the one you want doesn't help much. There's been plenty of times when I couldn't find something on it no matter what I searched for, only to have someone else get it on their first try. Google is powerful but it's not magic.

The ONLY new smilies we need are and . And possibly . Also, and need to have different codes so that we can still use <_< and >_> reliably. The only way now is to use escape codes (< |

It sounds like your power supply might be failiing or not powerful enough. Too little power could cause random crashes like that, and once you added RAM and a DVD drive, there might not even be enough to power the HD. NTLDR is one of the most important system files; if it's not there, either your HD is failing (which could mean it's dead or just a power issue) or something got corrupted. Try removing the RAM, DVD and whatever else you can, and see if that helps it. |
Also, next time you get the chance, go to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery Settings and turn off Automatically Restart (assuming you're using XP, given that it has NTLDR). That way you can actually see the error message when the system crashes. Write down the numbers and look them up on Microsoft.com (just the first one or two should do), and you should find some info. BTW if it were Blaster, you'd get an error message kinda thing that says the system is shutting down in a few minutes, with a timer counting down.

Having a faster HD probably will help. My computer's about the same age, judging by the speed, and it really sped up when I stuck a 7200RPM in it. I can search all 32GB of it in a few seconds, as opposed to taking 10 minutes for the old 20GB drive. (You'd really be surprised how much difference it can make.) |

Generally when you ask for help with a program, you should mention what program. DOSBox should be able to control the speed though. |

I use BitTornado myself, it's pretty good. All you can really do is wait for better seeds or find another source. |

Reminds me of the drivers for my Logitech camera. 70MB uncompressed. No way in hell are they going to convince me a camera driver needs that much space (wasn't Windows 95 only like 20?). So I just grabbed the actual driver file off the disc and left the rest of their crap to rot... Feel sorry for the people who have to DL it though. (35MB compressed, but uses one of them installer packages.) |

I was wondering when someone would say that. It doesn't even need to be open for that matter. Just make sure your file isn't open somewhere else when you save it. That applies to basically everything. |

I do use the patch now. I used StyleXP then, though. Plus at some point I might try to make my own theme. |

I'd be pretty worried if I were near someone who would laugh at that. |

The error means you didn't get anything besides a 'connection accepted' reply from the server. So either it's the connection or the server. You might have IE and FF configured differently... Also, I have that Copy problem in just about every program, it's rare though. It seems to be a Windows problem. |
The occasional crash is annoying, but 99% of the time it's an extension's fault. Plus when you open it again, your history is still there under Go. Finally when it takes forever to load, it's generally because you just installed a lot of extensions. Let it actually finish and it should work fine afterward. |
